Maybe just use mods I reckon. There are a whole lot more interesting stuff to pick from there instead of giving in to this buisness-model. And they are made from love rather than for profit.

Hotseat is great fun in Heroes, I have never tried it in Civ but I would really want to. It will probably take a day or two to complete a game - but bring beer and make it a thing sounds like a great idea.

I usually stick with games for weeklong periods. It has been quite a few weeks since I played Civ. I think I played 2 or 3 weeks after the last patch, but then it got old again. So I'm waiting for another patch, or some awesome mod to breathe some life into it again.

That Island looks like something I could have done. I enjoy fewer, big cities in my Empires and never go ICS so I don't know what is 'better'.

I always turn off 'time'.
