whales are very important in the early game because they provide all three recources . a whale + a second special resource some grassland and some forest will be a good starting point . Often such a location can be found in a few moves .

Beside all other things there are two points which make the game so ugly. First is the dumbness of the computer enemies and second is the crappy combat system .

I play SMAC for that reason, but civ is fun too even if you know that you will win .

SMAC is a great game. What is really better than in other civ games are the comp players. They all have there own 'personality' and playing style and at least try to get the advantage over you.

True starting on a small island is a challenge but i have to admit that i prefer the SMAC approach which will give you a transport ship at the beginning if the islands is very small.

1) I dont know any way. In different games you will need different units anyway , like on water maps more different ships , with hive only infantery , with the spartans lots of rovers , etc . 3) Yes you get true random maps. I had the problem with getting the same map twice once in civ ...

I like crusaders becauses they are available early and really cheap .
