Best tech you've gotten from The Oracle

I rarely see any reason to take anything other than Code of Laws simply because its the most expensive thing at the time and it lets me get the jump on my own religion (as i never win with the cheap early ones.

    refrigeration = desert cities

Does anyone else think refrigeration should allow the use of deserts? in todays world some of the biggest and most important cities exist in desert locations that were impossible 100 years ago. the middle east and the south western united states contain some of the most successfull cities in...

    Ridiculously long "wars"

they happen from time to time. you probably should have considered marching around an stomping on their resources in order to force them out (or kill their economy)

An idea to deal with Spearman beats Tank.

as noted. improbable wins are no longer an issue with CIV4. I mean.. i have seen some of course but more often than not improbable wins are the result of bad percentages or not paying attention to the reality of the battle. having said that in real history improbable wins are a fact of...

    Seemingly never ending war

because its just a bunch of skirmishes your not really driving up war wearyness. once a war starts the computer is loath to end any war untill they have felt a little pain.

a mod idea to solve STACK OF DOOM problem

i never saw SOD as a problem. could combat be done better? yes. but the SoD is a fair attempt within the constraints of the technology and mechanics of the game. 1upt as implimented in civ5 is crap. limited stacks would be the best method with the proper mechanics and sufficient AI.

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

right. its an almost CIV5 failure when it comes to AI diplomacy logic (had to drop that rub)

    Peaceful capitulation?

in a recent game ghandi was surrounded by Cathrine with 2 vassals and Peter and 2 other strong nations. Cathrine was number 1 on the leader board and I was number 2, Ghandi, Peter and 2 other countries were very close for the 3, 4, 5 and 6 slot with ranks changing every turn. at some point in...

playing vs. random civs - bugged? (all the time same civs)

i should have pointed out i always play custom game, random civ - random leader - unrestricted leaders (I pick my own civ and leader.)

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

OK Kochman, your right. it has happed before in history. you win the point. my question to you is this. does that make it a good mechanic to represent essentially the only reasonable way to go to war? barring your very specific instances. and understanding that this is a game and not a fully...

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

not really relevant since the two countries shared in effect cultural boarders, there was already a general state of war so troop movements were to be expected and norway did not have much of a military anyway. - naval battal, not an amphibious assault. in both casses there was some form of...

Raze a few cities and you're suddenly a pariah?

in my experiance the raz penalty stacks... 1st city is a penalty of 1. second city adds 2. third city either adds one more (penalty 3) or doubles the 2 (penalty 4) then the 4th city either adds one more (penalty 4) or doubles the 4 (penalty 8) either way it stacks pretty quickly you raze more...

playing vs. random civs - bugged? (all the time same civs)

i had not thought about it but your right. I tend to see some leaders much more than others... I see isabella all the time... i cant remember seeing Louis, Pacal, or Joao more than once if at all in the last 20 games or so.

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

Some great points made. I am against the cultural boarders movement penalty simply because anything effective would be unrealistic. saying that by some penalty a 4 movement transport suddenly cant make the 2 moves across cultural boarders to shore just seems a bit extreme. the land movement...

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

the problem is not seeing the ships. there a a host of ways to observe an incoming attack. the problem is that if i see a flotilla coming towards my shores I am not allowed to engage them without the penalty of declaring war. in real life if a country sent a battle group of ships and troop...

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

as noted pearl harbor was a raid not an invasion. in CIV terms what they did was declare war from 5 or 6 tiles away and then launch a bunch of air strikes. could they have with proper planning, resources and intention lead an amphibious invasion... MAYBE.. but not likley. amphibious assaults...

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

funny how every one comments assuming some kind of best case scenario If you have destroyers and they have age of sail... if you have lots of privateers... if you see them early enough in advance... etc etc. what if your totally even... what if they have naval tech advantage.... what if...

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

thats the strategy i use. I mean... I dont split units because your not always in a situation where you have a bunch of destroyers and they are still in the age of sail. still the only way to activly defend is to preemptive strike. I play the better AI mod and find that if your build up...

    countering the naval 'sneak' attack

Your navy spots a large flotilla of ships heading toward your shores. the ships belong to an opponent which is annoyed with you and has made several demands which you ignored. your pretty cirtain that the ships are an invation force heading toward one of your cities but you but its possible...
