I'm pretty sure this isn't true, unless there's a vocabulary conflict. Tarlelton's men fought on horseback, and the American cavalry almost decimated the British Redcoats at Guilford Courthouse (until Cornwallis turned cannon fire on to his own men).
Two different types of horses. Even back then, pack horses were bred to be stronger, while the "dragoon horses" were bred to be faster. They weren't really interchangeable.
I wrote up an Amazon.com 'Books I've Read About the American Revolution' list a couple weeks back. It mentions some of the books I've already mentioned, but it'll make it easier for anyone to find them (and other books I didn't mention)...
The best book for understanding the causes of the Revolution is The Glorious Cause (by Middlekauf), it's also really good for the constitution discussion. Battle discussion is strong, but since it covers so much territory it leaves out all the personal anecdotes (no mention of the Conway Cabal...
Wait, were you at war with them? No Civ that I can recall has ever had a "oh by the way you're automated unit is about to get captured" warning. Only Sentry would have warned (by activating), but for that, he'd have to be non-moving.
I think that falls under the category of calculated risk: do you ask for assistance from the Natives, knowing that doing so may make destroying all the troops harder, or do you not ask, and therefore have an easier time of finding the troops but a harder time of actually defeating them.
Ignoring all the REF discussion (because it's happening in half the threads right now) ... why didn't you just not have all the Expert Fishermen working? They can do other jobs, you know, and that way your population wouldn't grow as fast.
If that's the case, is there a way to make it so you can't drop guns if you attacked that turn? That would prevent the exploit.
EDIT: There should be a way to make it that soldiers and dragoons can't change professions. I'm not sure how to tie that into an attack, though.
SECOND EDIT...
You could avoid the exploit by keeping the game as it is now. I could see why it's an annoyance, but each turns represents a year passing, should a colonist who moves for half the year then produce as much as a colonist that worked the whole year?
Thunderfall:
Can you do two things?
1) Emphasize (more) the posting of a save file. No one is doing it, and it's hard to verify what people are seeing without it.
2) Add a point to subscribe to their thread. A lot of people are posting and then not coming back, probably because they...
I know that, and that's why I said you lose a turn of counterattack. It forces you to turtle for a turn, which gives the AI the opportunity to resupply or redeploy while you simply stand there waiting for the next turn. So instead of picking off an individual troop, you'll have to deal with...
And then what do you do if the Indians or another power attacks you? If you don't have a standing army, you're hosed (or at least lose a turn of counterattack).
"This caravel was originally set to full automatic"
Hrmm...it still might be. If you upload a save we can look at it, but I'm wondering if the caravel is automatically going back to Europe for some reason.
