    The joy of upgrading

I see, and I agree. What am I paying that Military Advisor for, anyway? :)

    Leaders get resurrected!

Yes, Martin Luther was one of the principle founders of Protestantism (1517), and Rev. King was named after him. Or, more recently, every tenth baby boy in western Pakistan has the name Osama...

When bad things happen to good civs

As the Russian Democracy, I have complete control of the largest continent in the world, studded with big, culturally advanced cities. Along come the Japanese with an expeditionary force, and within 2 turns they declare war, destroy the roads to a peninsular city, land a bunch of cav to...

    Does WLTKD even work? No...really.

WLTKD is also supposed to prevent your cities from "admiring another civ" - useful for border cities.

    What about Communism

I used to avoid it in Civ II because of the corruption, but that's a big problem with Republic and Democracy in Civ III anyway. Seems to me that avoiding war weariness would be the big win under Communism.

    Resources

It may be an illusion, but I think that young worlds (with high mountains) have more hill/mountain resources than older worlds.

    Iron works

I was able to build it in my first two games and thought, "well now, this is convenient." Never since. Seems silly that having a road between cities which have the resources doesn't give you the chance to build it, even though those resources are obviously transportable given...

someone explain this crap to me!

Is that perhaps because you are playing the same # of civs despite different map sizes? I would think the design would be a certain # of resources per civ -- hence, for a given map size, more civs more dense resources.

Tip: Fast Forward End of Turn

So, if I disable all animations on the preferences dialog, it still animates... just faster. Does that seem counter-intuitive to anybody else? Wish list: "animate only if battle" or "display messages but not animations."

    Histogram opinion

You can also hit the H button on the info window (i.e., that stack of D-E-P-H buttons on the right hand side) to display the histograph. All the F keys do stuff. The first 6 are your advisors, and after that there's data -- try them out.

    The joy of upgrading

SMAC's design room is certainly more convenient, but I assume Firaxis would argue that it's fantasyland and not appropriate to a historical sim.

    Sa-weet. Thanks, all.

    Quick View of Civil Disorder?

I've been using F1 and counting happy/unhappy citizens. Note that this starts out confusing (the icons are small and similar) but especially in large cities it becomes fairly easy to do. Still, red underlining would have been a helluva lot easier.

    The joy of upgrading

    1. When an upgrade becomes available, must I laboriously scan through the Military Advisor screen, find every instance of the old unit type, and click to attempt to upgrade it (an attempt which fails unless the unit is at least Veteran)? I wish there was a "upgrade all X to Y" option like...

Tip: Fast Forward End of Turn

Will that rush the AI and make it stupider, or will it just rush the animation?

    Sea trade routes

Connect by road to a coastal city with a harbor.

    Gold

A problem with this strategy is it restricts your choice of build square to the gold hill itself, so you have to be really fortunate on the placement of the surrounding terrain. I have usually found gold in hills which have at least another couple of hills around them, which gets you a very...

    Histogram opinion

At least it doesn't have the ceiling effect of the old graph. I always loved having the exponential increase in my score turn into a flat line when it reached the limits of the box.

    Gold

Gold seems not worth the trouble in the opening, and hence much less of an impact than it was in history. Since land grab is such an important part of the opening (even if you don't do it whole hog), you are going to be building a bunch of settlers and thus sacrificing many pop points in your...

It stays. It even pops up if you change the terrain before the resource is activated
