Revised strategy for Emperor and Deity levels

Yesterday, I started a new game on Emperor. I chose the Japanese, because they are religious (this one is almost overpowered. You get cheap temples and cathedrals which helps a lot with culture and happiness, and you can switch governments easily) and militaristic (because I did want to kick...

    Am I behind

Just for the record - I've had a couple of games (Emperor level) in which I entered the medieval age around 100 BC, and the industrial age about 900 AD.

Deity level ... any suggestions ?

Alright, here's what happened the first time I tried to tackle the map: I built my first four cities and started pumping mounted warriors from two cities with food bonuses and barracks (they could produce one mounted warrior every 3 turns on average). I declared war on the English and succeeded...

Deity level ... any suggestions ?

Okay, I recently started playing on decent level, but I cannot seem to get past the ancient age without being totally owned by the AI's. They obviously have an enormous production advantage and keep grabbing every single patch of land. By the time I have build four cities, the AI civs have...

    Nightmare Neighbors

Just played a game with the Zulu as my direct neighbors, and the Chinese beyond them. Argh. Both kept sending wave after wave of settlers, and I didn't have a change to kill all of them.

    Specialist citizens - bugged ?

Has anyone else noticed that the benefits of specialist citizens (taxmen/scientists) do not show up in the city screen ? I turn an entertainer into a scientist - the science output of the city doesn't change. I turn him into a taxman - the gold output of the city doesn't change. Do the...

    Post short tips here!

If you are playing a scientific or a religious civ, the library ore the temple can be rushed with the cost of one population unit under Despostim/Communism. So ... do the following: If a city takes 20 turns to grow to size 2, and takes less than 20 turns to build a military unit - build one...

AI stupidity - have a good laugh.

Okay, here's what happened: Playing as the Greek, I found myself falling behind in tech around 700 AD. Everyone else was going for useful techs (gunpowder, astronomy, printing press), while I was trying to get ... music theory (yes, I'm a sucker for Bach's cathedral). I finally get it, and...

    Wonders becoming obsolete ...

I think I have noticed a big difference in the mechanics of how wonders become obsolete when a certain tech is discovered: In Civ1/2, a wonder became obsolete if anyone on the planet discovered the tech that made it obsolete. This does not seem to be the case in Civ3 - rather, the wonder...

    Golden Age bad?

You can get two, I think. One when your special unit wins its first battle, and the other one when you complete a combination of wonders that matches your civs strengths ... see the Civilopedia on this one.

Don't overlook the cheap upgrade to Mech Infantry

Don't overlook the cheap upgrade from Warriors to Swordsmen much earlier. Warriors can be churned out quickly, and then upgraded to the most asswupping unit of the ancient era for only 40 gold.

    Random Number Generator?

Well, if they use the same seed for the random number generator in every game, you will get the same sequence of random numbers. That would be a blooper fit for a Sid Meier game, just like the integer overflow bug of Railroad Tycoon. Whoops. ;)

    Gold

And don't forget to check if the other Civs are willing to give you a small amount of gold if you are trading for something. Sometimes, if you trade tech for tech you can get between 10 and 50 gold.

    Iron

Or even better: Trade for some, and then use the Legions to get a permanent source. ;)

    Strange thing about research.

Here's something weird I noticed about research points: I started a new game, built one city and left the commerce distribution at 0.5.5, which gave me one point of research during the first turns. As the city grew, I adjusted the distribution so that the research stayed at one point. It took...
