The Apollo Challenge Lineup - Game #1 - African Union

The clinic I would agree. I was surprised at how useful the food was though. I tried two different initial build orders: OER->Worker and Worker->OER, working the hill for 2 production. Since there were several 3-yield tiles just outside the initial range I found OER first to work better...

The Apollo Challenge Lineup - Game #1 - African Union

Gave up my first try at T90. I went back 10-20 turns a few times to try out different approaches but ultimately concluded that my strategy as a whole was flawed. I'll have to try again from the start in a different way.

    Seeding options - best colonist

Hopefully they won't nerf artists but instead buff the others. Would be a shame if we'd be left with largely inconsequential differences in the end.

Steam Charts: some statistics of interest

The strong marketing effort may also play a role. Firaxis did a lot to promote BE, which may lead to higher sales to casual players. Even if they like the game, those players don't play as often, leading to a lower curve like the one we see.

    Apollo Challenge Thread

I'd be interested to play. I didn't play Civ5 but had lots of fun doing the IU and other threads in Civ4.

    Borderless Window

For me a key feature is being able to switch to a browser window and other applications quickly. It's possible in full screen mode, but takes some time. I found this WindowedBorderlessGaming in the Steam groups. People say it works for Civ 5, but I haven't yet figured out how to make it work...

    Early game defense

When lots of aliens are nearby, I had good results using the first 3 virtues on the left branch of Might to get :c5science: from killing aliens. With this, you can justify having 2 or 3 soldiers roaming about just killing aliens and taking out nests. Through the extra research, you'll get to...

Micromanagement is alive and well in Civ 4!

That's not a bug. With a forge, you get +25% production, so 1 pop provides 37 :hammers:. Since that's enough to complete your spy, you'll end up at 42/40 and lose 1 pop. If your spy was at 2/40 before the whip, you'd spend 2 pop and result in 77/40.

The Continuing story of Baron Munchausen [Deity Large Hemispheres]

On the tech path - I'm not that experienced on Deity, but to me hoping to trade IW+Math for Alphabet seems extremely unrealistic. In my experience, by the time the first AI gets Alpha, almost everybody will have IW and many will have Math. Finding an AI that's advanced enough to have Alpha but...

The Continuing story of Baron Munchausen [Deity Large Hemispheres]

On standard map scripts, I don't think it's possible for gems to spawn outside of jungle. If they're in a starting BFC the jungle is removed (that's what we get here), but if there are other gem tiles outside the BFC they would have jungle on them.

The Continuing story of Baron Munchausen [Deity Large Hemispheres]

SIP for me. I just don't see a compelling reason to spend a turn moving.

    Spiritual successor to Alpha Centauri?

As others said, one of the strongest things about SMAC/X was the amazing story and flavor. It sounds a lot like they're going for something similar here, so I'll be greatly looking forward to it! While the workshop was nice to tinker with, I found ultimately it came down to just a few core...

    AI Survival

You could try playing a slightly higher difficulty. The problem might be that on Noble, the AI doesn't start with any bonus units and sends their only military unit out on exploration. Generally, the Planetfall AI seems to be less competitive than the BtS one. If you play BtS on Noble, you'll...

Standing Army in Peacetime: Rule of Thumb?

As pepe26 said, with pleased neighbors, you can always get a 10 turn grace period - beg a little gold. If you don't overdo it (no more than every 30-40 turns), they'll accept. If you have a neighbor who you will inevitably fight, attack them on your terms. Get those 10 turns of peace from their...

Standing Army in Peacetime: Rule of Thumb?

As others said, let diplo be your army. Only have troops beyond garrison if they serve an explicit and worthwhile purpose, e.g. taking barb cities or sometimes upgrades, as mentioned. If you have a neighbor you can't get off your back, make sure the war happens on your terms. Hit them first...

Lonely Hearts Club, BtS Edition, Chapter LXXXII: Boudica

I guess that means you're doing quite a few things differently from me. By the time I settled that city, I was far away from CoL. It's expensive and not all that useful. The lack of food means that with a library and later forge, you can already run all the specialists your cities can support...
