Poulin, I had a similar problem (though not as severe) where it would freeze for about three minuites while it tried to access the cd rom. My suggestion is to turn off the music in the options menu, that helped for me.

I found an altered exe to get around copy protection, and it WORKED!!! I can play the game now, I'm sooooo happy. Somebody should say something to Firaxis, I souldn't have to get around the copy protection on a cd that I bought from Walmart!
