It's fairly trivial to configure a controller so that each button or D-Pad direction is mapped to a keyboard key. Most gamepad driver software includes a way to do this.
Truth is, I bought it. I've been saving up my allowance for years now, and it was supposed to be a Christmas gift for my wife. I can't believe they ruined the surprise by doing a press release!
None taken :D
I'm not saying it could be done without "cheating", indeed that is my point. Since the game "knows" everything and has access to shortcuts, in theory, at least, writing game AI that can always win is a lot easier than writing game AI that puts up a good fight but sometimes...
A few points to make here. First a disclaimer. I'm not a programmer. I'm sure Soren could comment more eloquently on this topic, but he's out of the office at the moment. With that said:
1) We are an independent developer, so any discussion of Infogrames/Atari's financials is really...
I should also point out that the game itself, like all Eagle games, is of outstanding build quality. It *is* expensive, but the box is HEAVY. There are a ton of pieces in there, and IMHO the game looks great too.
The only thing I wonder is how people get those pieces back in the box after...
The only problem with using winipcfg is that if you're behind a router that's doing NAT, you're going to get your local IP address, which is useless to anyone who might want to join your game. You need your external IP address, which is easily found on a website like the one I posted.
Dan
Actually in this scenario you should (IIRC) be able to host a local game and all four clients should be able to join without needing to use the direct IP option.
And, as counterintuitive as this sounds, you can host a direct IP-joinable game by hosting a "Local Game". The game will not use...
Just start a local game. Anyone who enters your IP address will be able to connect. I do not think GameSpy games work as well for direct IP connections.
If you don't know what your IP address is, try this:

You can use the IMPORT function to do this.
First open the mod you want to import the map into.
Then, just go to File->Import, then check "Map" (you may just want the World Map and not all the units and starting locs), then hit "OK" and select the BIC or BIX that contains the map you want...
It's Jeff BRIGGS as the Military Advisor, not Jeff Morris.
The "Play the World.txt" that ended up on the Civ III disc was actually something else entirely (something we decided not to pursue), and contrary to popular belief, it does not mean there's some hidden dormant multiplayer code in Civ...
I have moved on to other responsibilities at Firaxis, and no longer have the responsibility of updating our websites (including civ3.com). That said, Civ of the Week is still slated for the PTW civs and the first one should be going up soon. Infogrames is now handling all site updates, and we...
What it looks like you've got here is a situation where the game executable and the version of labels.txt do not match. The game loads labels in from that file, and from version to version new labels may be added or old ones deleted or changed, and when they get out of sync you get strange text...
If you're referring to me, your assumption is incorrect. As I am neither the producer for Civ, nor (any longer) the web guy, any time I spend posting on fansites is "my own time"..

If you are having issues with getting old BIC files to run with the new patch, try this:
Open the editor, and start a new BIC file.
Use the File->Import command to import the rules from your old BIC file. It may tell you it needs to modify some things from the old BIC to make them...
I don't think that's a bad idea at all, and had I more free time I was thinking about trying to put a diplo and pediaicons.txt editor together in VB. Alas, being a new homeowner is keeping my after-work hours a lot busier than they were in the past :)
That said, we *have* made the formats...
The CD version (and I think one or two of the patches, I'm not positive) used a "dynamic line drawing" process to connect the tech tree if the rules had been modified (because the game had no way of knowing if the techs were identical to our "factory presets").
Now (as of 1.17 or 1.21 I...
It's probably been a while since I've actually posted this, but since day one I've tried to warn people as often as possible not to mess with that file.
If you have anything other than the vanilla CD-version of Civ III installed (i.e., any patches installed), loading a scenario file from the...
