Looks like Firaxis has two options....

Every Civ release reminds me of Star Wars & George Lucas. He, like Sid Meier, once created something epic, but later proved that his legacy would have been better in other hands. Every release since Civ2 has been one major <snip>-up after another... Civ3 was extremely buggy, so much so that...

UFO: Enemy Unknown, remake by Firaxis

Grr, that's how it felt to me, too, but I thought I was missing something. Too bad. :( Oh well, time to install Dosbox and give the original one a whirl again. :scan: Thanks for the elaborate reply! :goodjob:

UFO: Enemy Unknown, remake by Firaxis

Hi, as a veteran of the original, I thought I start of with "Classic". The combat part is no problem (even though it bothers me that a soldier behind full cover can still be shot), but I have serious trouble with the base and alien UFOs. The game starts in March and already in May, there...

Civ 5 on sale for £4.99 (note: deal finished)

    Haha, good one! :goodjob:

Do people finally like Civ5 now?

As many many have stated before, it is still vastly inferior compared to the previous titles. But most haters have moved on (this is my first post here in a long time). Actually, I think it is a good indication of just how much that game sucks that there are still so many people around that...

    Is it really that bad?

OMG! Me, too. Though we only had 2 386 and 8 286, so each break there was a rush to the computer room in order to grab the 386s, since the 286 were borderline for Civ (but at least then there were fast enough). :p Yes. Reinstall Civ4.

Huge waiting time on a SB + hd 6950 Pc , is it normal?

Yes, quite normal. :( Sad fact is that the game is badly programmed, even worse than its predecessors.

Civ V's downfall: differences between programming and designing

True. Why does it have to do that? That's why I was specifically referring to Civ5 on release, where the unit movement was really exactly that - a bunch of units charging the enemy without much strategic consideration. But that's exactly what the AI does, even with later patches (so I've heard -...

Civ V's downfall: differences between programming and designing

I have to say that while I don't like Civ5 at all, I disagree with most of what you said. But most importantly this: The switch to hexes did not increase the complexity of the game from a programming perspective at all. As was discussed elsewhere, hexes are actually easier to implement than...

Do you think Civ V is doomed?

    Doomed +1 :(

Anyone know if Civ5 has been pirated yet?

Guess what I did when I wanted to play my newly-purchased Civ3 Tin Edition on my Toshiba M200 (a tablet PC without a CD-ROM drive)? But just for the record - if you like a game, buy it!

    Boredom with CIV5 demystified

I also absolutely disagree with the I can safely say that Civilization I was a godawful game part. I also think that Sid, at some point, was really good at envisioning computer games. But for me he is more like George Lucas, who had one stroke of genius (Star Wars, even though he "borrowed"...

    Favorite Firaxis Quotes

Thanks for this. Ever since Civ5 was released, I had this quote from a Firaxis employee stuck in my head, where he promised the AI would be far superior so that it does not require cheating and would scale with the difficulty level instead. Sadly I can't find it anymore. :( But yeah, they...

Maybe I *have* been thinking of Civ5 the wrong way!

I doubt they are "hiding", neither do I think that they regard Civ5 as a failure. It is clear that they wanted to target a more casual audience and that they achieved and there are quite a few people, even on this forum, who like that change. Commercially and critically, Civ5 was a success...

Sid Meier's GDC2010 talk, obviously the Civ5 devs didnt listen.. Why?

No, they are not better than riflemen, since those people don't stand a chance in an open confrontation. Imagine that a spearmen unit in 1950s is an old unit that was trained with spears and never got the resources from its government to get some modern weapons (but they WERE trained in...

Maybe I *have* been thinking of Civ5 the wrong way!

I was with you for most of your journey :), except: But Civ5 WAS advertised as a worthy successor of the franchise. Only AFTER the release were we told that the target audience was more on the casual side. and While it is true that only time will tell, the experience with the gaming industry...

Sid Meier's GDC2010 talk, obviously the Civ5 devs didnt listen.. Why?

Only unclear if you didn't properly read my previous post(s). No, I didn't "invert" anything. I pointed out that 3 people were bashing me for something they themselves didn't comprehend. So? What does that have to do with anything? I'm happy for you that you seem to have understood what I meant...

What will Civilization 10 be like?

Yep, I agree. I actually think that there are quite a few aspects from Civ1/2 that I wish Civ3/4/5 had. Examples? Here: Look at the Civ1 screenshot in the OP (or better yet, any Civ1 screenshot that is full of units). One thing that you might notice (well, I definitely do) is that it is VERY...

Sid Meier's GDC2010 talk, obviously the Civ5 devs didnt listen.. Why?

Yep, I totally agree (as long as it is still at least semi-TBS, e.g. 1 turn per day). :p

Sid Meier's GDC2010 talk, obviously the Civ5 devs didnt listen.. Why?

Indeed, a somewhat arbitrary but sensible function would have to be defined for this, which might not be immediately accessible for the player (but could be explained via a tooltip, a civiliopedia entry or the manual). But besides being more realistic (which is only of secondary importance imo...
