Fair point Dan, you were pretty measured in your criticism.
Based on many of the concerns voiced though it was clear that some of your panel hadn't even read anything about the game, and the show had an uncomfortable "we don't like this guy" vibe it. You're all smart people and I enjoy...
Just saw this earlier today:
http://massively.joystiq.com/2011/07/21/xl-games-making-civilization-mmo/
Is this real? Does anyone know anything else about it?
I wouldn't get your hopes up... someone noticed the same thing at PAX East and one of the Firaxis guys said it was a concept they had tried out but probably wouldn't make it into the final game. It was in some thread here - I don't remember which one.
What else would you expect 2K to say? That they forced the developer to do something they didn't want? When was the last time we heard from someone from Firaxis and not 2K on these forums?
I would assume he does over every project. It is his company after all. :) To be fair though, the only two Civilization games that Sid has been the designer of are Civ 1 and Civ Rev. The rest turned out pretty good despite him not being too involved.
Noticed this morning that there's a recording of the show available here:

They don't talk too much about Civ 5 though.
That's not actually true of Sid. I remember reading somewhere that he did all of the design and gameplay programming for Civ Revolution. So it seems like he does still do hands-on design, just not with every Firaxis game.
Facebook is really just a games portal. What the games look and play like is completely up to the developers. So if Sid wants to put in a map there's nothing stopping him.
One can assume you're talking about Civ 4 and not Revolution, but that's neither here nor there...
Yes. Play on smaller maps.
If you're playing on Huge or larger that's the fastest you can expect the game to ever be, regardless of your system specs.
Hmmm... I was responding to a comment made by someone hoping Rev would eventually come out for the PC, but that seems to have mysteriously disappeared...
Time between turns is nearly 100% gameplay code (whether it's in Lua or C++). The core game can get pretty bad as you note, but mods are often much, MUCH worse.
