Why is CIV4 still the best civ game?

Is AC a civ game? Well, that depends on how stringent the definition is. It's not part of the "Civilization" series. But, it could be seen as the first "what happens after a Space Race victory" game. And it's certainly a 4X game in the same mold as Civ. Civ goes from the agriculture to space...

Games with increased tech cost (or preventing units become obsolete)?

Yes, if you're playing a pure wargame. It just doesn't make sense in a through-the-ages historical game. Even Alexanders conquest only reached appr. 4000km or a 10th of the distance around the world with a 1 MP (movement point) army. Even the Mongols only went appr. 6000km, with quicker cavalry...

Games with increased tech cost (or preventing units become obsolete)?

Only in absolute terms. You can build 25% more troops in the same timeframe. You could also increase movement speed for all units, so they'll be quicker to reach the front.

Games with increased tech cost (or preventing units become obsolete)?

Well actually, Marathon speed triples the cost for techs and buildings (300%), but only increases unit cost to 240%, so you should have more time for moving your troops. See this article: https://forums.civfanatics.com/threads/game-speed-and-map-size.411750/ Why you would want to march on a...

    New players are still arriving...

Thank you again! I tried a few things, but for me installing protontricks and installing corefonts, d3dx9 and msxml3 through it did the job. Now, I probably have to edit the config file for the calendar bug, but I haven't gotten this far in-game yet. Woo-hoo!

Thank you, I'll try these tips tonight.

    New players are still arriving...

Haha, I somewhat disagree, but you're also right. The games I play, like Stellaris, Football Manager, Humankind, Old World and quite a few more "graphics intensive" games work perfectly in Linux. I think this is because I chose an AMD instead of Nvidia graphics card, but YMMV. Older games also...

    New players are still arriving...

I still want to play, but as I've switched to linux I'm having trouble getting it to work. The game crashes when world generation is over and the map loads into turn 1. 😢 (Steam+Proton+GloriousEggroll)

    Balance and Gameplay discussion.

As of now, Pathfinders can be upgraded to Cavalry for a "measly" 230 gold. Expansive leaders get the free morale promotion on all recon units. Hello blitzkrieg! 3-move cav with guerilla III was a steamroller. Maybe the upgrade path should be changed?

    Your Civ4 Identity

Favorite Leader: Darius, Mansa Favorite Civ: French Favorite AI: Hatty, stable and dependable Strengths: Early Expansion, City specialization Weaknesses: Defence during early expansion, thank heavens there's no "pillage tech when conquer city" in Civ4 :-) I often lose a city before realizing...

Is this the reason for the 4000BC start?

Well, of course I don't think Sid was worried about creationists' rage. I just thought it was a funny coincidence, that's all :-)

Is this the reason for the 4000BC start?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ussher_chronology Really Sid? You have got to be kidding me! The genius of the 4000BC start is astounding. It appeases the religious loons, and the rest just never thinks about it. Or maybe it's just me being as dense as a white dwarf, since I haven't...

Shouldn't exploration ability be limited during the Ancient times era?

Firstly, the best solution for prolonged exploration is bigger (and I mean HUGE) maps. In SMAC, I'm usually well into the mid-game before I've explored the whole of planet. And getting to satellites usually reveal a couple of tiles as well. Secondly, the maintenance solution feels really...

    Anti-Steam Petition

/signed The idea of steam is good, but not allowing people to opt-out of using a third party is not acceptable. The securom on col2 nearly made me swear off Firaxis (or 2K or whomever is in charge of putting these things on other peoples' systems) for good. Now I'm certain. I will not buy...

    Exploration and explorers

What if exploring the wild was much more dangerous? Scouts could die in scores from animals, disease, etc. But they would be much cheaper to build. A bit more micro, I suppose.

    Vive le revelution!

Fun is subjective, though. Some might not think it fun to be watching out for rebels and internal opposition, but for those of us who really enjoy surprises and game-changing twists RevDCM is really a boon. I mean, rebellion is preventable if you play carefully, but it also means that you...

Stop Trying to make Civ V into a war simulator

I don't think the trouble with civ is too little impact of military adventures or to little "civilization building". The thing that is sorely lacking in civ is that it's way too easy to "hold on to" your civilizations power. The fact is, no civ (IRL) has been able to hold on to its influence for...

    Which mod would you recommend?

I second the suggestion for Legends of Revolution! I never play "vanilla" BTS anymore. It's just boring when you don't have revolutions and minor nations. Plus, the swordsman actually has a role to play in LoR.
