Simply select a lot of units together using the shift key (they have little pictures right above the blue bar). The game remembers their grouping.

Your minimap which shows you where you are in the world does not expand until you reach the Calendar technology. A huge map generaly does have several continents, just you don't know about them yet. If you really want to see the world size, just fire up the worldbuilder ingame.

Yes. When you setup the game, there is a set of numbers next to the player type (1, 2, 3, etc...) If you want locked alliances from the getgo, you need to make two people the same team #.

Dump the onboard graphics, go for a Nvidia GeForce 6600 or better. The cards are around $100 these days. At least 512MB ram, 1GB is even better. If you're going to buy a new computer, might as well buy one which will last :)
