    Small question about SE

I've done the Oracle/ Metal Casting/ GE for Pyramids gambit only once, in fact in my current Prince game it didn't come together and I missed the Pyramids, someone else got them. Then the wrong city popped a Great Prophet and put the arrival of the second cities GE back a few hundred years. Then...

    Destroying Apollo program

Hi Druidravi, You've come across the one annoying thing about this game. I find that when I'm researching Cavalry in the 1800's Asoka/Ghandi goes and wins by building the spaceship. Before anyone laughs I play at Monarch, and have only beaten it once. Usually if you see messages like 'a...

Stuck In A Rut, Can't Beat Prince!

I've recently upped my game from Prince to Monarch and have started beating the AI or at least coming second. I was following the guides I'd read on having production and gold/research cities but wasn't doing too well. I have found that not building and working cottages until slightly later...

Early maces, does it work, DOES IT WHAT!!

ROFL @ Nub and drkodos, funniest thing I've read all day!! Think I'll try the warrior strategy out in my next Monarch game (still not beaten this level). Wish me luck ;-)

    Too much...

I think I've got to uninstall Civ4 and Warlords.... I haven't seen the wife for a few evenings and I can't take another 'Louis XIV has won a Space Victory' grrrr.... I'll be back sometime though - no doubt.

How to stay up in techs while isolated???

I'm currently at 1400AD or so in a similar game to yours... I'm third in the table and maybe top of the techs, I'd recommend beelining to Chemistry and rushing your weakest neighnour with Grenadiers and Frigates. At least that's what I'll be doing when I get home later!

    Optimum amount of cities...

Ya, I am doing something wrong in my Monarch games - but quite what it is eludes me - I chop forests, I whip citizens, I have Science specialists toiling away to produce Scientist GPP, I have villages/towns for gold, I have a religion or two but it all goes wrong at some point and the AI speeds...

    Optimum amount of cities...

Hmmm... I've never tried an early war in case I lost any gains I made in tech by building axemen instead. Maybe next game? Also it takes ages for the axemen to get to the enemy cities, by that time they have Feudalism and the dreaded longbow.

    Optimum amount of cities...

Howdy, After playing for a while I can't help but think that despite trying SE, CE, Hybrid and other methods of playing that getting a good civ going comes down to one thing... the amount of cities you have at a certain point in the game. Playing on Monarch 3 core cities get's me swamped...

Specialist Economy - are you guys really buying this?

Hi all, A fantastic debate and I've just played my first Monarch game running a SE... normally I'd run a CE and fall way behind in the tech race but with only a couple of cottage tiles I was ahead until the 1700's with only 3 cities, and only the capital had more than a couple of grassland...

Scares the cr@p out of me!

Has anyone else noticed that when the leaders animations appear in the diplomacy screens the drawing order is such that the eyes and teeth meshes are shown first then the skin on top of that... however on my pc the skin mesh sometimes takes a half second longer to draw so I get a flash frame of...

How far can you go into the "red"?

    LOL... That is sooooooo cheating!

Bronze, then resource tech or the other way?

My first priority is farming or animal husbandy to get a 4-food tile, or if I have a leader who knows about agriculture already then I'll go for a religion then bronze working. The painful bit is waiting for the city to get large enough to start building that first worker unit, usually I wait...

    Broadway is a joke!

Gaaargh! It's not called soccer.... it's called football in the rest of the world!

Really, really bad Great Plains map

Having lots of cows about may be good to start with but what about all the methane they generate from their rears... surely global warming will be upon you sooner than you think!

Spy vs. Spy - how does it work?

I don't know but it was a wicked game on the Commodore64!

    Stonehenge or Oracle

I'm waaay below you on Prince level still but how about the Oracle>Metal Casting. If you're alone then you may not need the culture boost from the Obelisks early on but if you have a Forge in a city then you can build more civic improvements at greater speed. [EDIT] Forgot what I was going...

    Keep your enemies down

Yes and a pretty poor STRATEGY TIP! My opponents won't tremble as you say if I keep my borders closed... no trade routes, no spread of my religion (BTW choose theocracy so enemy religions don't spread to me) and anyway Montezuma will 'open borders' by steaming his troops across the border...

    Keep your enemies down

Why not just write 'Start Civ4, watch pretty intro, play to win, sit back and feel gooooood'. Just about as useful I think! What about city specialisation? Great People? Which wonders help you out if you're Catherine etc etc etc. This game has far more depth than 'expand in ancient times'...
