Well, the great strength of Civilization has always been how customizable the game is. Such events could easily be implemented in such a way as to allow players to switch it on/off in the advanced set-up menu. Unfortunately the CiV V designers decided *everyone* wanted *less* options.
If you play on a high difficulty level the penalties you get versus the bonuses the AI gets makes a big impact on approval rating. Nothing to worry about though, as long as your unhappiness is not too high.
Well, I sincerely believe the core mechanics are sound, the haters will move on, and the game will be patched and expanded until it's a joy to play. If I recall correctly Civilization IV was much the same in this regard.
At first puppets tend to build buildings you would have built anyway like monuments. I've also seen that puppets will focus on happiness buildings when your empire is unhappy. As soon as they start buildings which I do not regard as necessary I annex them.
Building a navy feels like too much of an exploit since the AI doesn't use naval forces much. They do occasionally build ships, move troops over the water, and build cities on other continents, but these are rare in the first case, and almost never happens in the second in third case. At most a...
Have any of considered using mods? Honestly I don't even know why anybody even bothers without them. There is a mod that will reveal both the flavour- respects strength, happiness or culture- and the mood- friendly, neutral and hostile- during diplomatic negotiations.
People often criticize Arabia but never take into account its unique building. The Bazaar is quite a useful replacement for the market, which in my opinion makes the Arabs somewhat stronger than most people think. That said, they are still somewhat weak. I think the +1 gold should be +2 gold.
Although focusing on culture from the start is important in the choice of techs, wonders and policies, try putting culture on the back burner and focus on military first. Once the AI has been broken you can focus on culture at your leisure.
Pikemen. The secret is to use Pikemen when everybody is still using classical age units. It's easy to do by beelining civil service, and you get a farm bonus too.
I'm not sure if I agree with most of the advice here. I was able to win a 1986 cultural victory, and I controlled 90% of my continent on a standard map. I don't think puppet cities count towards the cultural cap being raised, although they will drain you financially, and I had at least 7 cities...
Three patches plus a pre release patch? How is that not a lot in the short amount of time since this game has been released? Or were you expecting hourly updates? Keep in mind that every patch has game breaking potential, so they can't go overboard. Also, many people won't exactly be happy with...
Related question. Is there any way at all to change music by age? I really miss that feature, it was a mistake to move it. I have some pretty good ideas for what kind of music should play for what age.
