    Destroying one's own city

The only real way to destroy a city is to use the World Builder and simply erase the city. I don't consider this cheating since they failed to incorporate this important function in the game.

Problems with wonder movies? Cut it out!

So you just removed the files from the movie folder, or did you delete the whole movie folder? I also have a lot of problems with the damn wonder movies, and there is no option to turn it off....

How good are Pyramids and Representation, really?

As has been pointed out the cost of building Pyramids is what concerns me most. Without stone you could get 4.5 settlers instead (or 4 settler-warrior combos), with stone it's 2.25 (or 2 settler-warrior combos). So basically it's worth 2-4 cities during the early land grab phase. I only try to...

Land grab VS research and infrastructure

Playing on emperor level (mostly pangea map) I will chop rush workers and settlers to grab land quickly. As long as I already have pottery I will keep expanding even if it means my science is at 0%, since as soon as a city is size 2 and both those citizens are working tiles with a cottage it...

    Cities: Specialized vs. Well rounded

One thing to consider about production cities is that with the right tech and state property the following two rules apply: 1) you shouldn't build farms if you can avoid it 2) a city without hills can have equal production to a city with hills With all the appropriate tech and state...

Forest Chopping - A Practical Test

The best test I can think of to compare the chopping and the tree-hugging strategy are to simply go all-out chopping during one game, and compare it to one of your standard methods. For the chopping game build more workers, and save no trees. I always chop down every single little tree as fast...

Forest Chopping - A Practical Test

Well to be honest I haven't played the GOTM yet since it was set at a rather low difficulty level (I forgot which one). But I have never succeeded on Emperor without heavy chopping. Not once. Hey, I might be a sucky player and not be able to adapt or whatever, but tree-hugging gets me nowhere...

    Mechanics: Commerce, Science, Research

Basically from what I've understood (correct me if I'm wrong): PER CITY: From tiles = commerce From palace = commerce Trade routes = commerce From shrine = gold From specialists = gold NATIONAL: From trade deals with other civs = free gold into "bank account" All commerce is...

Cottages on grassland or floodplains....?.....or both?

Btw in your example the only reason I can think of that you would build a farm in this city is that you either want specialists in the city, or you want it to grow to size 20 faster.

Cottages on grassland or floodplains....?.....or both?

Obviously if you are going for a commerce city (which you seem to be doing, since you have at least 1 cottage in the city) then you should do as follows: 10 grassland -> all cottage 4 floodplains -> all cottage 4 plains -> all cottage 2 hills -> all cottage (or windmill) You don't...

    The importance of resources

Part I: health resources There are 11 resources in the game that give only health. I divide these into 3 main groups: animals (pig, cow, sheep, deer), grains (corn, wheat, rice, banana) and sea-food (fish, clam, crab). All of these give +1 health when you have built the relevant improvement...

    The importance of resources

I have been playing the Civ-series since Civilization 1 came out in 1991, and what struck me first about CIV was the multitude of resources available on the map. Many are the same as before, such as wheat, fish and gold but there were so many new resources that it was hard to keep track of them...

    Catherine Cottage Spam

I don't have any screenies from various time periods right now, but next game I will be sure to make some. Some things of interest to consider in the early phases of the game: 1) It's hard (without caste system) to be able to asign the specialists you want in the early game. For merchants you...

    Catherine Cottage Spam

You can build cottages on grassland-hills, but not plains-hills. You can also build cottage on tundra if it is next to a river. I have actually gotten some quite decent commerce cities in a place where I originally thought "Wow, that place will totally SUCK for cottages!". Of course a...

    Catherine Cottage Spam

What I don't get is why you are running the city at 44 food, which is 6 more than you need to run all the tiles (20-1=19). The 3 scientists mean you are farming 3 grasslands that could have been towns instead, so you get 9 base science instead of 24 base commerce. Not a very good trade off IMHO...

    Building 2nd settler first

As LuvMacheen pointed out building settlers early is very important, at least on the higher difficulty levels. It's all one big land grab, basically you want to expand as fast as you can until all land is taken by either you or the AI. However the best way to build those settlers is not to...

How do I disband a city?

For some odd reason they forgot to implement a "abandon city" function, so the only way to do it is with the World Builder. It's rather strange that they haven't included this in any of the patches yet, since if you don't remove cities the whole culture flipping thing is quite pointless (or...

The Settler Challenge - A Collaborative Article

Yes, this kind of rapid expansion will hurt your cashflow, but on the harder game levels you realy must expand this fast in order to grab enough land early in the game. To counter the bad cashflow you will want to do the following: 1) Build lots of cottages. If you are financial and build a...
