It isn't the game that sucks because with the DLL the AI and other things could have been made really great for decades to come. Rather it is Firaxis that sucks for not releasing the DLL like they did both in CIV 4-5.

It isn't just us gamers they let down...
I've got 1260 hrs on Civ5 after 11 years = 10 hours / month and needed mods to enjoy it
I've got 0175 hrs on Civ6 after 05 years = 03 hours / month and was quickly bored with it spending most of that time frustrated trying to find mods to make it playable
I've got 0125 hrs on HK after 02 months...
To be fair HK should be compared against other 4X games at their first bug fix after launch not as they are now or modded. Doing that shows HK is an impressive achievement this early.
I'm playing a game now where I can conduct inquisitions, banish population and force my neighbours into -50 stability to adopt my state religion. Religion matters.
Humankind is conservative with religion but does a good job with it. It provides powerful benefits with tenants and later creates important diplomatic strategy. It is already a good and meaningful feature that can now be improved further (but carefully)
It isn't so much drifting away from Civ6 it is drifting away from Firaxis. Amplitude have worked so brilliantly with Humankind in almost every area I doubt Firaxis can make a comeback with civ (other than hype) they are so far behind now.
HK is not a bean counting game. Stop optimizing to the max. Start thinking alt-history and deliberately play sub-optimal where necessary. Simple as that. It was the same in civ6 but the AI was so bad it spoiled the alt-history story. The so called "balance" is not economic in nature. It is about...
You don't have to change your culture if you don't want to. The game does not force it. Matter of fact it would be a challenge to keep your same culture through the whole game and still be competitive.
look at the state of the game now it needs six months of work to get the base game up to scratch. Had they done what they used to do which was release an expansion instead of these game modes, by now we would have had a feature rich game with integrated development of the base and we would be in...
Oh it follows. for each mode there was time spent developing the mode instead of the base game. there is a reason modding is officially added to games so that developers can focus on the game not mods. civ6 modes are poorly implemented mods that took time away from improving the core. the base...
The argument that we should just turn off the modes we don't like is mute. For every mode we turn off came at a cost because developing each mode is time the developers didn't spend on improving the base game. If u follow through this logic eventually u have to turn off so many modes it just...
when you're ready for another game message me for the latest version that increases the ancient era minimum cap and other changes that have been worked on since.
Simple deduction beyond reasonable doubt. The graphics code is locked away and not for discussion by anyone and could be very high tech (for all we know). But there is nothing radical about how the DLL code performs in civ6 and the way that code behaves is obviously just an iteration on what...
It might have become a meme that took on a life of it's own you could have a point there. Somehow that meme took hold in my mind where ever I heard it from all those years ago.
What they should have done is release the DLL code as soon as the game was launched. They would have created even more revenue and kept the modders loyal. Instead they lied about it being the most moddable game ever (which I fell for hook line and sinker) and like all lies they got trapped and...
There is nothing special in their DLL code they need to keep private it is old tech and all other 4X companies know how to code and will probably do better not looking at Firaxis code. The only tech they need to keep private is the graphics engine but that would always be locked away in any...
