    One of those games

Haha, the normal way. I suppose you mean by assigning specialists. I would say that both ways are equally valid, and that "normal" is based on whatever your starting conditions indicate. In a hammer-rich environment, it might be "normal" to get GP from Wonders.

    Cultural Genocide

For me, it would be more realistic if, once you capture a city, it could revolt at any time, and revert to its former culture. Even if that culture is "crushed" so to speak, and this revolting city becomes the new capital. I mean, the Romans crushed Carthage how many times, and it just kept...

    Cultural Genocide

Does anyone else find it odd that Civ IV sort of encourages absolute annihilation of other civilizations? I mean, I would be perfectly content to let some AI civ keep their puny size-one city on the ice floe, but as long as that city exists, I can still get "We want to join our Motherland"...

    deer and silver

Yeah, there are some resources that are mobile that way (horses, wheat, corn, rice) and others that definitely are not (gems, gold, oil). Horses weren't native to the Americas either, till some careless Spaniards let some escape. Once they were loose, though, the Native Americans sure made...

    When to build first settler?

I find it very map-dependent as well. I play small maps (limited computer capacity) and it gets crowded fast. I gotta get that first Settler out quick, but no, you don't want to make it your first build.

    Best Starting tech?

Like Johnpecan said, it's really dependent on what level you are playing at. At lower levels, I was happy with whatever, and I could just leverage whatever I started with. But playing at Monarch, an early ax-rush is really important to me, so it's Mining for me, hands-down. As a bonus, I can...

Map trading to AI, do they use it?

I play a lot on the Terra map (where there is a guaranteed unsettled barbarian continent) and the AI players really really want to trade for my World Map if I'm first to discover the new continent. Usually if I'm far enough ahead, and if I have the circumnavigation bonus, I might trade...

    New settler system?

Historically, the Greeks, Romans and Phoenecians did pretty much what we do in Vanilla Civ IV -- they recruit a bunch of citizens, promise them a new life in a new place, and send them out to a pre-chosen location. Most times, the colonies retained their language and culture. Sometimes the...

    Fast elimination of rivals, how?

I wish someone could explain how whipping 20% of your population to an early grave makes the rest of the people happy. Even my nine-year-old sees the odd logic in that. "Haha, my people. You are unhappy. Therefore I will whip you mercilessly to build a Forge. Ah, now that's better...

    Alexander Help

Eeek! I almost never automate workers -- they always seem to do the wrong thing. It's definitely worth the time to have a master-plan and instruct each worker what to do. That way, like Sisiutil says, you can cottage where you want, and farm where you want, not where the workers think is...

    Sea controll

Oh completely, totally. I love love love sinking a transport or galleon with troops aboard. The problem is that they are so mobile, they can usually land on your shores in the same turn that you discover them. One defensive technique is to shadow their embarkation port. The AI I've found...

there needs to be a longbow UU in this game :)

I like how the poll was worded. Not a whole lot of actual choice there - yes, yes, or yes  Yeah, I always thought the Longbow should have been an English UU, but then again, I love Redcoats too. Maybe Elizabeth gets Longbows and Victoria gets Redcoats? ;) On a related note, I was...

    bombers or artilary?

I agree. An overwhelming bomber fleet always does the trick for me. Even if my opponent has fighters and SAM, they can be overwhelmed. My bombers might take damage, but I just send them back home to heal and bring up fresh ones, since they are so mobile. Then the healed ones are ready to...

    Extortion/gunpoint diplomacy

Yeah, even though there's a ten-turn peace treaty, does the poor, downtrodden civ really think you're just going to take your techs and NOT stomp him into oblivion the moment that eleventh turn comes around?

    Medeival Warfare?

Plus, it's more historically accurate! :D

What leaders do you love to have in a game?

For me, it really depends on what kind of game I want to play. And sometimes it DETERMINES what kind of game I want to play. If I get Mansa Musa or Gandhi nearby, I am going on an axe rampage before they get too tech-wise. If I get one of the aggro's, I can just defend a bit till I achieve...

    Barbarians

I've always found the barb cities to be at least as intelligently located as the AI cities -- usually with one or two resources within BFC. But yeah, like the AI, they don't seem to hesitate to build one tile from the coast, and they don't seem to build defensively, except by coincidence, like...

    Barbarians

Yeah, that's what I meant! Actually, being a Vanilla player, I don't have access to Protective, so I was just over-stating the case.

    You know what's fun?

Yes, I was talking about a Terra map, not the Earth scenario. (I do like a certain element of randomness and surprise in my games). And you're right, Persia is another good candidate for this kind of Conquest. I just knocked out the Greeks, Incas, Russians and am a few turns from taking out...

    Barbarians

Don't forget that Barbarians are a nice, easy way to give your units experience. Park an archer on a wooded hill, let the warriors and archers come, and boom! You've got a level-five archer. Move him back to your capital, replace with a new archer unit, and repeat!
