Hi, I might give this game another go, (being more descriptive this time ) but before I do, can someone tell me how dalamb marked city sites like that? The whole blue/magenta thing. Is it a mod? I've tried looking around for something like it, but couldn't find anything.
Right, my miserable failures from the last game still ringing in my mind, I hope to put what I've learned to use and actually WIN this game! Wooh! Also, I hope to post a lot more frequently on the forums, so you can actually see my thought process.
In regards to the starting spot, I settle my first city, Funkytown, and move the scout to get that goodie hut, which gifts me The Wheel. Woooh! Will update with pics once something interesting happens.
Sorry for doublepost, forgot to spoiler tag the first one
Spoiler:
I've ecountered Hannibal/De Gaulle/Tokugawa. Hannibal founded Buddhism, and I accidentally misclicked early on and declared war on him. Crap.
A few turns later I negotiated peace, so no major harm done. Here are my cities so far. I failed to box Hannibal in very good, but I did manage to settle in such a way to block off his access to iron. I haven't put too much thought into where I put my cities, I just made sure they had the best optimization of special resources, and didnt overlap too much with any nearby city. Pics follow.
So you can see where I am right now.
And there is my resource layout. I got the Great Wall up, and am going to settle the Great Spy I'll pop soon to up my espionage. I missed the time frame for an early rush against Hannibal, so I'm looking to REX and keep De Gaulle/Tokugawa small for now, and then war with Catapults against Hannibal. Went to Masonry, Ironworking, and now headed for Construction. Have most early worker techs as well.
@Hamster
1) Your war with Carthage does not look like it went well and lasted way to long. The reason is clear by looking at the map. You have all that juicy forest that was not chopped around Aksum. With chopping and the whip you can get up a sizable army in no time with more on the way.
Thanks for the reply. I'll take your suggestion on the screenies for next time. The reason the forests are uncut is for later infrastructure chopping like Libraries and wonders. However, what you seem to be implying is that for the rush, the immediate need for a SoD now is more important, yes?
2) No libraries! You are creative! Not taking advantage of that is a huge mistake. Heck, a 2 pop axe or worker whip in cities like Aksum will probably build the library almost completely with overflow. You could have at least 2 GS's by now plus an overall better tech rate.
This sort of relates to the above. My cities were building units, not infrastructure for the rush, but I take your point about better leveraging the leader traits.
3) Why are you running your slider at 30% with all that gold? Not sure if Fishing is the best choice. Yeah you have one seafood, but Carthage isn't exactly hurting for food. You need to tech to better your economy and setup trades. Alpha, Maths, Currency would all be good choice. This is a crotchety couple of neighbors you have so you might need Alpha yourself to get some trades going with DeG. Also, you want something to gift Toku to get him to Pleased. Really, on Noble, you should blow these guys away tech wise. Of course, not having libraries doesn't help. (Note: Toku is strangely more advanced on this map for some reason, maybe he lucky hutted. Same thing happened in my IMM game, but I'm still destroying him with Phantapults as we speak.
That's a lot of gold? I am trying to avoid going into the red. So whip/chop libraries now, and then deficit research with the better rate?
As for Alphabet, backfilling would make more sense, assuming I can get De Gaulle to trade (since Toku won't). I want to get to CoL so I can switch to Caste System and run Specialists.
Also, why do I want Toku at Pleased? He doesn't trade techs.
I couldn't afford it, or at least that's what I thought. Anyway, I want a city directly south of the mountain next to the ruins so I can claim the horse, cow and spice.
6) Why do you use the "No Tech Brokering" option? It hurts you more than the AI.
Usually, I have a stronger tech lead, so I want to be the only trader and have the luxury of waiting a few turns until the AIs have something worthwhile. How do other players handle this?
7) No point being in Slavery if you are not going to use it.
Well, yes. I should used the whip more freely. Just reluctant to do so if the populace are working developed tiles.
In retrospect, it might have been wiser just to try to box Hannibal in with cities, then attack with Cats and Swords. There might have been a prize or two had I waited. My infrastructure would have been stronger.
There is a reason why Lalibela is placed where it is. It's called ignorance on my part D:
Thanks for all your tips! And for drawing my attention to it. But I've found my problem is warfare. I either attack before i'm ready, fail to take them fully, and then fall behind everyone because of it. Or I attack too late, and my units become outdated/the enemy becomes too powerful.
I've found loads on HOW to attack, but not WHEN. When do I know I'm ready? How many axemen per city? What about catapults? If I've hit construction, should I hold off to build some of them, or wait a bit longer? I generally seem to be waiting too long and warfare ends up bogging me down to the point that by the time I've won, if I've won, I end up losing the match anyway cause I fell behind while warfaring.
Edit: Sorry, I'm new to this whole forum scene, I've never really used them before. And I do use spoiler tags? Theres nothing in my post that could be construed as a spoiler :/
@Funk Mama
BUG will help you see at a glance what your power ratio to an enemy is, which can help with judging DOW times ... but really it's about getting used to reading the tech, resource and trait situation.
Also: don't neglect scouting (to be honest, that's a weakness for me, too). If you have OB, send a scout through your target's land and see what sort of stacks and city defense percentages they have.
4000bc-2000bc immediate area discovered due to 3 scouts
will be extremely thankfull for early game criticisms
Spoiler:
4000 BC Now I understand why people hate huts: map, map, experience, scout
this is obviously an advantage for no-reloading player like me.
well, no comment. someone is on steroids. well, I never won a game where I didnt take out immediate neighbor anyway
as always, struggling with my early builds.....
caprica: worker, scout, warrior,
settler (chopped * 1), axemen
settler(chopped * 1), worker,
next:
settler (chopped * 1)
2nd city: worker (this decision was crap...)... axemen
3rd city: umm? barracks? then switch to worker when we grow?... axemen
and research...
BW - worker techs - iron working - ummmm? maybe try to build oracle - col? what else to aim for? I left the religions to AIs,
some ideas:
next will be of course the iron city, then probably soe of the distant ones, then the close ones. food food is my city placement strategy.
but i am already having trouble in selecting specialization for the cities. anyways why specialization when the only build order will be axes and swords?
immediate goals: establish 2-3 more cities, kill hannibal
short term: establish GP (umm hbout carthago?) farm and commerce city
interim goals: kill other civs in nearby area/continent, establish an empire
long term: if pangea go for domination if continents will be considered later
also, not cool. just how many civs are there in civ4 So why have we seen two of them in the -previous game already?
the pain. only people who took many games in the civ3 "random" to realize it´s bugged, and started to hate native americans in the process place.
PS
you use spoilers if you go advanced and select the spoil buttom.
or use html code SPOILER
how do you name the city dots?
how do you delete the city dots?
I conquered Hannibal in 1175 BC. Utica wasn't in what I'd consider the optimal position (I'd rather have included the horses in its BFC) but it was the Hindu holy city, so I kept it. I'd be running a 40% slider to have positive cash flow if I didn't have so much money from conquest (and from running 0% while building libraries). So I need to tech Code of Laws for the courthouses before I plant any more cities or conquer anyone else.
Other events: I Oracle'd Metal Casting in 1175 BC, to my surprise given De Gaulle and Tokugawa's advantages (IND, versus Stone/Marble). In 1475 BC I was doing better in Culture than I expected:
Next is planting a few more cities and conquering Japan, in some order. Tokugawa is the preferred target because:
I'm surprised De Gaulle has built no wonders yet, despite being INDustrious. Here's my plan for possible city sites.
White in the NE is high priority because of the gold; with forges, that's +2 for all my cities, some of which currently have only 5. It could go 1N instead, to use the jungle rice instead of Carthage's wheat, but that would require iron working. I'm not sure if the NE magenta makes sense; it crowds the nearby Japanese city

what difficulty you play on?
you let Hanibal expand a lot. you play a espionage heavy game? I think your earlx city placement + wonder building halted you progress at start and made your situation not so good.
Founding Confu was fine. Adopting it was probably a mistake, however
I founded Confu, too - but never adopted it. In fact, I sent the free missionary to De Gaulle since he didn't have a religion yet, to put him and Toku into separate faiths.
Your empire looks well set. Spamming cheap courthouses will help you pay to get even more cities cities, and you should be able to dominate Toku when the time comes.

combat 740 AD - Tokugawa eliminated by swords I left him one city to blackmail techs to be killed in 10 turns
I took all of the wonders he built for me.
I was on verge of switching to cultural win, since I realized, the other continent (no one new met so far) is backward (no wonders there at all) when this happened: 940 AD - De Gaulle vassalizes Tokugawa (whom I wanted to kill off, be he build another city) - and DoW - well I wanted this continent for myself anyway
1460 AD - over 200 turns in the game. De Gaulle is on verge of defeat. shipyards are working triple shifts to help kill islands, if not blackmailed.
main battle force consisted of catapults, crossbows, elephants and spies to take out walls.
victory condition plan
culture win:
Satsuma, Caprica, Carthago.
Aksum is switched for Satsuma, because satsuma can support many artists,
Aksum is food poor.
Satsuma:
Caprica and Carthago:
culture win stats:
alternative
conquest victory. to challenge myself, since this map is realistically 1-2 levels down in difficulty.
I rarely do purely conquest victory, but I remember the film for it is epic.
note:
the espionage slider is temporary..... I trade commerce for more sabotages (military strength) vs france, to kill them faster without replenishing my troops
immediate and interim goals
- finish of france before they give techs to backward continent
- follow both VC for a while
- establish a beachead from greece cities
- beelines: liberalism, galleons, SP, cavalry
espionage examples
Spoiler:
I used espionage to steal construction and theology and horseback riding. with espp directed at one civ and having spies at 50%, this became cheap way to catch up. didn't have to move slider.
Then I used it to take down walls, which means a city can be taken immediately even with far weaker force. Inciting revolt is only to be used after walls were taken or if you have no siege at all.
If I will go for conquest, espionage will help finding cities (passive)
eary espionage cheap techs he would not blackmail
espionage in combat, this force would have no chance if walls were up. this way it was possible although I still needed few reinforcements:

will be extremely happy for feedback, this time also adding a save.
I use this mod (its BUG + HOF and GOTM compatibility, so its pretty useful around here)
my next post will probably just be the VC screen, this was really 2-3 levels down compared to the oasis bloodbath
So after posting last time, I've played further into this game than I probably should have. At the beginning of this turn, I now realize I may be shafted, and not sure how to dig myself out of this hole. I'm going to include a save, it will most likely make it easier to look at than SS's, but I will provide both and try to be brief with my overview.
1595 AD
Spoiler:
I'm stuck on this dang continent with Toku (who has been annoyed with me since the beginning of the game and has now declared 2x on me), De Gaule + Hannibal (who I've managed to keep both at Pleased) and Darius discovered me. Unfortunately he beat me by about 3 turns to the circumnavigation bonus. I have yet to meet Germany or Shaka yet, and it's now this late. Only thing I can think of, is at least it will be easy for me to get them to like me once I do meet them, I can just shove money and techs down their throat.
Somehow though at the beginning of this turn everything went down the drain. Hannibal went down to cautious with me, I ended up bribing him back to pleased. He frightens me, I didn't want him turning around and trying to declare on me. Apparently though, on his turn Toku wussed out and capped to DeGaule. So now I'm fighting a war with about half of my continent, and I fear I am severely undermanned for this as well as losing this game because of this war.
So my question now becomes, how do I fix this? I know it is probably too early to throw in the towel at this low of a difficulty, but I just see this war dragging on forever if I don't do something. So I turn to the highly knowledgeable people on this forum and beg for mercy.
Edit: On further thought, this sounds like I'm ready to throw in the towel over a few road bumps. I realize that this is low difficulty and less than halfway through the game, I just figured I would come here for help before I do something that could potentially further screw up my game. Also, I REALLY want to wipe out Toku, I just don't know if it's feasible with the cities and army I have now. Especially now that France is in on this, it makes me worried, as well as the fact that this war has gone on longer than I want it to. I don't have the requisite techs to expand my empire that much bigger, or to facilitate warmongering yet. I'm also not that comfortable with warmongering in general, I tend to be too overcautious, and then I still end up making stupid mistakes and wiping out stacks of my own army. So any help anyone could give me would be most appreciated. I might actually be able to learn something.

I haven't looked at your save, but just from your comments/screenshots:
Your first mistake was not axe-rushing Hannibal. This would let you block off a big chunk of land right at the start. Then settle blocking cities to claim as much land as possible while heading for recovery techs (alpha/ currency/ CoL). That will win you the game right there.
Why on earth did you go for SciMeth/Bio if you're planning war? Rifling and Nationalism (for drafting) would have made this a cakewalk.
I realized that in the mid BCs, I should have rushed Hannibal, but I'm not comfortable with an early rush. I think I need to either watch a couple of videos or read a bit more on it. I've believe I tried it once, failed miserably at it, and have been loathe to try again.
I did Sci Method and Bio because I was basically in the midst of trying to get closer to a Space Race victory (I believe that or UN are the only ways I'm going to win this). I grabbed Gunpowder fairly early on because it gave me a one up on the AIs and also allowed me to build my UU. I continued down the path I was on, because I'm a noob and will be making stupid mistakes through Noble that were easily fumbled through on lower levels.
I actually never planned this war, I had left over stacks from the last time he declared on me. As soon as he declared this time, I started pumping out the units I could and haphazardly researching as well. Now I know I probably should have asked for help earlier than this, but I got caught up in the "Just one more turn" mentality. I'm hoping that I can claw my way back from this though.
First, stop researching Bio, unless you are going to try to get DeG to make peace. That'll probably require a significant bribe at this point, though, so don't count on it happening until you knock him back a bit. Instead, research military science and then go for Rifling. Oromo warriors are good, but Grenadiers are better.
Second, stop producing infrastructure. Pump units instead. Even if you don't have a barracks, Oromo Warriors are good for holding your cities. The exception is the Heroic Epic, which you should finish.
I can't tell much about your diplomatic or military situation from what you have posted (I didn't look at the save) but you have two options. 1) Play a defensive game for a bit, kill some French troops, try to take a French city, and then make peace. Since Toku did not capitulate to DeG, he may well break away at some point once you are at peace, at which point you can renew the war. 2) Switch to military production and research, defeat the incoming French stacks, and go on the offensive. I'd go for DeG first, since he's the stronger foe.
Either way, you should be using espionage heavily at this stage in the game. Put one city on pumping spies, make sure your EPs are focused on DeG, and send the spies to sabotage his strategic resources.
I continued down the path I was on, because I'm a noob and will be making stupid mistakes through Noble that were easily fumbled through on lower levels.

hello,
I will look at your save later today and try to come up with a way to still win.
definitely play until bitter end. SO what if someone launches a spaceship, but you arent leaving until you wipe japan and carthago out.
if you play before then, listen to the other advice your were given above, but first try to organize your military. sounds that military is your weak side.
you dont fight long wars.
every unit is precarious. build a combined stack of units with siege, then go for it.
about axe rushing. this is what i did in the early game: you can find my opening in some of my first posts.
after I had 5-6 good cities, and 1 worker per city, i started to build barracks everywhere, then axemen, i satcked all the build axemen in my most eastern city untile there were 10 (most with city attack promotion - important)
with 10 i made my move onto carthoga, taking a smaller city on the way.
i described it all earlier.
until the war was over 4/5 cities kept producing axemen, then swordmen (with city attack) and more exemen to defend and kill units (with strenght) all moving in stacks, protecting each unit and selecxting proms correctly. 1 city kep circulating to produce more settlers or improvements.
this is all there is to rushing. some people actually do this with one city, but this is not so advantageous on this map, since we were so boosted by chopping start and good city sites around.
also in my case this delayed rush meant i just went for tokugava with the very same stacks and more coming in.
try to find your own way to taking quickly your nearest opponent
also use slavery and whip from time to time.
did you chop forests at start?
opening of the game is extremely important...... it can give you edge and momentum, or ruin you.
I dont think I won a game, where I didnt kill my imediate neighbout before 0ads
