Undead slavery, while loyal, dependable, and stupid, has its limits. First of all is the need to constantly raid other species for bodies to use as workforce. Undead, even if great care has been put into it, eventually rots and wastes away after all.
What is the alternative? The solution, obviously, is the slavery of the living. Living slaves come with the benefit of actually being able to create more of themselves.
Ideal slave candidates, therefore, are the halflings and the ratman. Both are of relatively short and small stature, which means that the human population of our race will easily overpower them if the slaves ever desire to bear arms against us. Both are also very proliftic creatures, which means that they can create a large number of slaves quickly with a fewer starting number.
Get your mind out of the gutter, fool.
But the living slaves come with the defect known as
free will. This defect must thereby be
purged from every slave through a complicated system of torture and cruelty.
In addition, there will always be the problem of becoming too dependent on the slaves. Icaran necromantic arts, luckily relieves much of this problem. Slaves, on their first sign of dissent, can simply be eaten and revivified as stupid, loyal slaves. Because the Icaran society is made up in such a way that people actually
benefit from the murder of a slave, dependence can be eliminated.
But simple brutality such as the above will not completely break the will of a slave. No, it must go much further. No, a slave must
not consider himself above animals at the end of the ordeal. He or she must be beaten, violated, and tortured until all such thoughts have left his or her body, for if they even DARE believe that they may have a chance against the masters, they shall become lazy and unwilling to work. Nay, they must know only
pain, and the
fear of receiving pain.
There must, in other words, be no
joy in a slave's life, for if there is joy, the slave will realize that there is always an opportunity for his or her lfie to be better.
An Icaran slave will, therefore, learn to despise joy, for indulging in one would mean that he or she shall be sent to a fate a thousand times worse soon by the overlords. They shall relish pain, for feeling it will mean that their lives have been spared from a far worse fate for that day.
But then there is this thing called love. Ah, the cliched power of love. Slaves forming an unbreakable bond with each other. This may or may not prove problematic... so I shall do away with Love. That's right,
I shall eliminate love.
Most male slaves will be castrated from birth, and then raised by human taskmasters. Most female slaves will be eat-killed off soon. Bonds between family, will then be severed. Under the taskmaster's education, the slaves will lose all bonds of friendship. We shall give them names that indicate their station in life, nothing more, so we shall eliminate their sense of identity.
But how shall I create more slaves if most of them are castrated/ea-killed? Simple.
I shall dig a large pit near Abyss, where hundreds of wailing slave-women shall be chained to the bed with a male slave constantly raping them. It shall be patrolled by humans and also will be the center of vivification and thaumaturgical magic research in Icara. Slaves will be brought in here, where they will be endlessly be tortured by mages with too much time and creativity in their hands. Healing magic will be tested and practiced on dying female slaves to keep them alive. All slaves will learn to fear the pits that they have come from, for they know that the very worst of fates, becoming a mere guinea pig for the dark and powerful mages of Abyss, awaits them there.
Oh, and just to be sure, all male slaves who hasn't been castrated will be killed off after three years of breeding. Otherwise, they will be given the choice of castrating and joining the Auxillary Legion.
Women, as soon as they are out of breeding age/too weak, will be eaten alive.
Joining the Auxillary Legion will be a previllage granted to few slaves (which is actually many, I guess) who have proven their loyalty to the King. Despite being watched all the time, they shall be granted leave from the capricious tortures done by the Icarans. They will always stand at the forefront, assisting the Legion defeat the enemies.
And they will fight like little devils... for they know that if they do not, the Pits will await them.
