TerraNES: The Civil Experiment

To keep y'all busy while I'm gone, I'm showcasing a few things.

First, I am caving under pressure and starting a Wiki. It is Here. I would greatly prefer that you guys discuss the basic format before the plunge, but vigilante updating is also loved. Any help here will be duly rewarded.

One thing I will be strict on is that if you own a nation, you write its description. Any other people can either get permission to help on a specific section, or make comments either on the bottom of the page, or on a linked page which is "X nation's view on the Y" or "X player's view on Y". For NPCs, work out who takes charge of writing whose pages after I finish the basic skeleton outline.

Second, I am starting a story minigame. Basically, I want you to detail, in decent to high resolution, a single event in the day to day life of your culture. Until Wednesday, our first minigame event will be a Marriage. Show me an idea marriage. What does the groom think? What does the bride think? Who arranged it? What do they eat, and what do they listen to? Who gives the rites; is the marriage religious or cultural?

I will help update the wikia and take a nonbiased approach to it. :)

Spoiler Story of the Frenkish War :
Spoiler Orleans :
Warchief Souvisap first met the armies of Osismied on an open field during a new raid into Osismied. He saw 500 men standing infront of his army and took the bait. He didn't know that they were all of the Unsullied. The Frenks attacked and gates of the army swung shut behind them. But, only 2 troops of Frenkish spearmen were caught in the trap. After that, the Frenks withdrew from the country of Osismied with the Osismidian army in hot pursuit.
Spoiler :

The armies clashed once again outside of the Northern gates of Orleans but Souvisap retreated into Orleans with his soldiers at the end of the battle. Orleans fell under a tiresome siege. The siege lasted for a month.

One day, the armies of Osismied disappeared from the site of the walls of Orleans. Some expected a surprise attack, some thought their ordeal was over. By the time of the attack a month later though, their guard had been lowered on the city.
The Unsullied, using the cover of the woods, night and tall grass, soundlessly creeped towards the walls.((They are spread out along the wall at this point)) Upon reaching them, they began to climb the wall. Several patrols walked by looking out at the fields and the forests. One look down would have blown the entire plan. The Unsullied neared the top and the Spearmen quietly rushed out of the forest. They ran to the Northern Gates. They were spotted about halfway to their destination and the sentries on the walls began to shout. The Unsullied reached the top of the wall and killed most of the sentries - cutting their cries short. They climbed back down the other side of the wall((much faster)) and gathered at the Northern gates. They opened the gates and then the battle began. By the time the battle was over, the sun was rising. The Osismidians held the Northern half of Orleans and the ferry while the Frenks held the side of the South of the river. Both armies rested. Twenty-four hours later, the Unsullied were once again used as the spearhead of the army and were ferried across at dawn.

At the end of the day, the Osismidian spearmen who had been blood-drunk(looting, raping, pillaging) after the battle, were finally brought back under control. When Souvisap was found, King Cernyd chopped his head off in the city center himself. - payment for hiring assassins to kill his father. He was not pleased with the emptiness it left in him.

Cernyd stayed in Orleans for a month and finally decided that he would not rest until all of the Frenkish chiefs either had their blood soaking the dirt or were his. His next target was Tours.

Spoiler Tours :
Following the South bank of the river Loire, King Cernyd marched for Tours. This time he would have Naval support when he reached Tours.

Regardless, The chieftains Jarvisco and Davinsa attack three times. Davinsa attacked first. He used surrise and attacked with a large war party. The veteran soldiers of Osismied had enough time however, to pull out their weapons and swing. The fighting was gruesome and both sides took casualties. Davinsa retreated. It would not be the last seen of him. The army forged on and battered it's way through an army sent by Jarvisco's brother, Frennedan. They retreated as well leaving the soldiers of Osismied even more bloodied. Eventually, scouts returned with reports of a massive host of two warchiefs approaching. King Cernyd viewed the host from afar and was worried. They would have to go through to reach Tours where reinforcements, supplies, and rest awaited after taking the city. King Cernyd decided to wait the Barbarians out. With barbarians as you know, alliances can be touchy at best. Frennedan lost control of himself 2 days later and made Davinsa's daughter his paramour. Enraged, Davinsa killed Frennedan and it created a power vacuum. Frennedan's only other brother(not counting Jarvisco), Brennus, assumed command. He hated Davinsa due to Davinsa murdering Frennedan. Brennus slowly separated his camp from Davinsa's over several days. Eventually, the camps began to turn into a bloody killing ground. The Osismidians got into position and slowly surrounded the barbarian hordes beating eachother up. The massively outnumbered Osismidians charged from the forests and attacked the fatigued tribesmen who had been fighting for a day. Many things contributed to victory at this fight. Training only being one of them. Brennus was found and dead during the battle and Davinsa managed to escape with a quarter of the forces he had brought North.

The even smaller army of Osismied then marched to Tours unopposed except for minor skirmishes.

Spoiler :

When King Cernyd reached Tours with as tenth of the strength he started out with, the Fleet of Osismied reached Tours. They landed on the Northern side of the river and cleared that side while the wartorn soldiers Cernyd had been campaigning with assaulted the South side of Tours. They kept the soldiers in the South busy with coordinated strikes on the walls. When the reinforcements finished off the Northern armies they hopped back onto the ships and disembarked on the South side. They met mediocre resistance until they reached the walls. That is where the fight truly happened. The reinforcements climbed the steps and opened the gates. They fought their way out from the Southern Gates and eventually defeated Jarvisco. Jarvisco agreed to follow Cernyd and so survived.

The reinforcements also came with news that there would be no more reinforcements - only supplies.

Spoiler Bourdeaux :
Jarvisco was able to convince a few of the Northern warchiefs to join the army of Osismied.((not counted in my forces - you'll see why later. Amounts to 6 units of militia))

After somewhat securing the area during the next month - killing off small-time chieftains, etc., King Cernyd left Tours with his entire army and more than enough supplied to reach the mouth of the river Garonne north of Bordeaux. They reached there with barely any supplies left due to raids and small skirmishes. The Frenks were seemingly asleep.
Spoiler :

The army was resupplied and they marched to the first Fjord of the Dordogne. Resistance began to appear once more.
Spoiler :

They reached the other side of the river and the resistance increased tenfold. Every day there was a battle or a raiding party seen in the distance. Eventually, King Cernyd figured it all out. There was a King in the South controlling the troop movements. He was using small task forces to wear down the army of Osismied.

Little did they know, but Davinsa with the remnants of his army and being the only powerful warlord from the North still alive, crushed all opposition he could reach quickly. He was not happy that he had left the other half of his forces down in the South to solidify his position when he went North. He could have destroyed the forces of Osismied and killed their king but for that blunder. He also would have been able to destroy Osismied. It still ended up however with him having the backing of over half of the Southern chieftains.

Anyways, the Osismidian army at nearly full strength with the help of Jarvisco, ((who now knows the manner of his family's destruction and is completely loyal to King Cernyd)) moved closer to Bordeaux.
Spoiler :

Scouts then came back with reports of a massive((Very Massive)) host moving East from Bordeaux. The army consisted of over half of the warchiefs of the South-West. ((minus a few due to the harrying attacks))

The army of Osismied picked a big hill to sit upon and waited till they were surrounded. King Cernyd picked this tactic because a chief of chiefs would have to offer battle to the war-hungry Frenkish horde. If they waited, their armies would break apart and shatter with infighting. The enemy would also face an uphill battle. They would first be showered with arrows and then the melee battle would start. The soldiers of Osismied cut down trees and made a ring of trees on the top of the hill. Not big enough to stop them, but just enough to slow them down. King Cernyd had placed several wagons in the middle surrounded by a second fortification of wagons tipped on their sides. The gate would be open until the treeline was overrun.

Then the Frenkish Horde arrived and the supply line was cut. When the numbers appeared, the 3 warchiefs that had been convinced by Jarvisco to join Cernyd's army joined the enemy. Only Jarvisco's men stayed due to their loyalty to Jarvisco.

They attacked three times over four days. The first time, they sent a tenth of the army up the hill on the Western side. The archers carved big holes in the host but there was too many. Winded, the host reached the line of tree trunks and shattered upon the Unsullied's spears. Enraged, the Chief of Chiefs held a meeting in his tent with his warlords. Whatever was said, the plan ended up being a decoy charge from the West and a charge sneaking in from the east to take them by surprise. each would also be one tenth of the horde.

The next day, another tenth of the horde ran up the hill to attack the army of Osismied. The archers of the Osismied army were called to the Eastern side halfway through the fight due to another host arriving from the East. Half of the Unsullied spearmen also joined the archers. The battle lasted for much longer and this time there were casualties on both sides. The Chief of Chiefs was again enraged.

He met again with his warlords and whatever was said, the next day, the entire horde attacked on all sides. The Osismied archers carved holes in the horde as they ran up the hill. It was even more treacherous then before on the East and West sides to to bodies and the slick bloody ground. They reached the top and the unsullied kept them at bay for a while and then they started to break through. The order was given to retreat to the wagon line and the Frenks who forgot to bring fire, had to use their pure numbers to press in on the wagon line.

The archers finally ran out of arrows at this point and started to throw stones. The wagon line began to crunch as the Frenks continued to press in on the wagon line. The Frenks were packed so tight that they couldn't lift their arms. The dead could not fall either. That is when the melee portion of the death trap kicked in. The spearmen pulled out their spears and began to stick them into the masses. By the end of the day, both sides collapsed from pure exhaustion.

The attack was renewed on the following day. The wagons continued to get crunched in and eventually, the soldiers jumped off of them. They were in it for their lives now that they faced only 2 tenths of the original force. The wagon line burst asunder as wood flew everywhere causing casualties on both sides. The odds were now 2 to 1. Both sides fought valiantly. The lines of the Osismied held for a short while. eventually, enough berserkers broke through the lines and it turned into chaos. At the end of the battle, the enemy was routed and King Cernyd had to lick his wounds.

The war had taken it's toll as the beleaguered army marched to Tours. Warchief Jarvisco survived and was named the Governor of Loire(Until further notice, this means he controls the armies of Tours and Orleans for now and is tasked with stabilizing those regions). His son now holds this position. King Cernyd took a new name after this. He became King Cunneda the Conqueror.
Davinsa was not killed that day but after his humiliating loss, he lost all his chances of becoming the Chief of Chiefs. The remnants of those loyal to him were ambushed in the South. His body was not found on the field with his comrades. To this day, we have no idea what happened to Chief Davinsa. He simply vanished.

Quite long no?

This mini-game is a very cool and very good idea, Terrance.

I'll help in the wikia as well. Also looking forward to the mini games. Just made my account for the wikia.

I think we should set up nation history by area.
Spoiler My proposed outline :
History -> Area -> Country.
History -> Religion
History -> Government Types
Maps((World and player-made area maps))
Rules((Split into Religion, Economy, Warfare, etc. just so it's easy to find stuff if people look at the rules section on the wiki))
Other Sections((Individual names))

OOC: Keep turns as they are (50 years). No BT.
From Bekka
Welcome to the Temple of the Black Stone. We have many offerings to sell to merchants, although the road to Aden is quite long and ardous.

Aden
I want to know about all those strange places you are going to. What's your price?

From Kartoros
We've finally united Kush! As the Kingdom of Kush, we reiterate our friendship towards you.
To Bekka: May this trade route flow with goods for years to come. Our Arabian colonies can serve as import/export ports.
To Aden: Mesopotamia? 3EP, same as we payed you.
To Kartoros (Kush): Congratulations on your victory. Now, remember to pay your 4EP war debt.
I mearly wish to ensure that my diplomacy was not lost.

Quite long no?

Not that bad in truth; I think we will be filling the wiki up quite a bit as time goes on. :)

Until Wednesday, our first minigame event will be a Marriage. Show me an idea marriage. What does the groom think? What does the bride think? Who arranged it? What do they eat, and what do they listen to? Who gives the rites; is the marriage religious or cultural?

Japanese marriage

If a man wants to marry a woman, he must come at her parents house and ask permission if he can take her as his wife. If the parents agree, the groom will have to make sword duel against a member of the wife's family. The sword isn't real, so it doesn't kill. After that, the groom and the wife go at the Church, along with some relatives. Once the Priest of the Sun God tells the religious ritual, the groom and the wife make a sword duel. And in this duel the swords aren't real. Finally, they have a dinner and have fun with the relatives.

The following excerpt is from a broken Etassian law tablet from the library of Etass.

Hurrian Marriage Law

  1. The father of a family may have their choice in spouse for any children of theirs, with the consent of the said child and the mother. If there is no consent from the child, but the child or mother cannot find a suitable spouse within 1 week of the father’s proposed spouse, the child will marry the father’s choice. If a suitable replacement is found, by the mother or child, and the child consents, the father will then be given 1 week to find another spouse, during which week the child must not be in any contact with his or his mother’s selection. The child will then make the final decision between the two spouses, taking into consideration his father’s wishes.
  2. Outside of Etass, marriages between Aramyans and Moserean traders must occur with the consent of the chief of the particular Moserean trading-tribe the selected spouse is from, and must follow the previous regulations outlined in Article I.
  3. Outside of Etass, marriages between Aramyans and Moserean settled peoples or non-Moserean settled peoples follow all regulations with the addition that the local envisionary pay, through Etass sent money, for all reasonable wedding expenses, which includes a small dowry boost for women.
  4. All marriages involving at least one Aramyan will follow Aramyan procedures, with ample supply of beer, a prayer to the fertility goddess Danu --

Etassian marriages were almost always managed by the fathers, with very infrequent protest by the children involved. Though the fathers never had much political gain in marriages, so they were most often assigned based on the likeliness of the children to make a happy family.
The marriage itself involved inviting hundreds of guests, which usually meant festivals included several marriages at the same time, and were more of a community affair. The expenses were community expenses, beer came from the city tavern, with food from the city granary, and each guest also brought their own plate, which was representative of their wealth.
Though no historical records exist of what the marrying couple thought of the wedding itself, or the idea of weddings, emphasis in records is often placed on how lovely the other partner in the relationship is. The partner’s elegance and grace and their own gratitude towards their parents for making such a wise selection.

In Nenekatae, there is no matrimony. The chief of a village makes matches, and then those two people are united. This is not a concrete union, however. Many women and men have boyfriends and/or girlfriends outside of their selected mate.

Courtship is very simple. "I love you." Then, the woman replies by either slapping the man or kissing him.

After the age of 14, if a male above the age of 14 asks a female to have some fun, the female must comply.

OOC: Yep. It's a messed up society.

For Vahlshallahn marriage, courtship is simple and easy, as any person over the age of fourteen may do so with another member of the society. For marriage, the permission to marry must be obtained from both the parents of the courters, and also an outside third party (typically guardians or god parents of the courters). Once permission is obtained, both the courters go to a temple or another location that the Faith has and ask to be married there, which involves elaborate proceedings and consecration of the vows given to two people.

If there is a love triangle involved in courtship, the two people will often fight to the death over the other person. This involves both men fighting over women, and women fighting over men. Certain rules apply during this, involving no allowance of pulling on the hair of the opponent, unfair groin kicks, unfair advantages or stimulants on the mind or the physical body, and other things. If one does not comply with these rules, the person is taking aside and forced to pick either setting themselves on fire, flaying their own skin, or slicing up their neck as deep as they can. Opponents can be spared in the fighting though. Weapons can also be picked, which is why lances, spears, and swords will sometimes be used against others.
