A Series of Random Civs for Pentathlon, Octathlon and, (Finally) Machiavelli

I started this game, Tiny, Spaceship, Chieftian, because even though my previous game had placed on the table, it was #10 and liable to be knocked off by someone else. So I resolved to play again to place higher in the table. The goal is to be no lower than 9th. Eighth would be nice, but I'll settle for being number 9. That means it will take two game to boot me off the table. Not impossible, but hopefully it would not happen in one month!

Random civ is Ottomans, SCI and IND. Neat! I don't think I've had this trait combo before for a trip to the stars.

At Start

This start, well, hmm. A BG to the NW, Goody Hut to the SE and three jungles running NW->SE and a river tile sorta nearby. Move our worker 1NW onto the BG and spot a whale. Move our settler 1SW to be on the coast and still pop the goody hut when we build our capital 001 Horns in F. Goody Hut gives us Pottery. We stay isolated for a bit and meet the Americans in 3150 BC. Like us, they have only one city.

Known World 3000 BC

Spoiler :

We soon build 002 Tambourine, find the city of Washington, pop a goody hut (got a map) and launch a curragh. In 2350 BC we meet the Germans in the west. Rome's red borders are spotted and we finally meet in 2110 BC.

We build 003 Flute in 2070 BC and revolt to Republic in 1300 BC. We start 004 Triangle in 1125 BC and 005 Contrabassoon in 1075 BC.

Known World 1000 BC

Spoiler :

We build The Colossus in 950 BC and connect Dyes, our first luxury, soon afterward. In 550 BC we enter the Middle Ages and get Monotheism as our freebie tech. 006 Bass Trombone, 007 Cymbals and 008 Clarinet in B-flat get tuned up.

Known World 10 AD

Spoiler :

L01 InSenseAble, an Incense city, is built but not connected. Wines and Incense are soon in play. L02 Seaside Spices gets established. In 210 AD Zakariya al-Razi appears and is used to rush Copernicus' Observatory. 009 Wood block grabs us Saltpeter in 570 AD. 010 Glockenspiel is founded just before we enter the Industrial Age in 660 AD. Coal is connected in 780 AD and rails soon follow. We build Newton's University and enter our Golden Age in 860 AD.

Known World 1000 AD

Spoiler :

In 1000 AD we are on Turn 14 of our Golden Age. We keep on learning, mostly ignoring our neighbors. In 1295 AD we enter the Modern Age. We then gift Germany into the Modern Age too, buy Ecology from them for Rocketry, and then declare war on them. That triggers an American DoW on us due to a German-American MPP. We have 21 cities, Germany has 3.

Berlin is defended by a Spear, but we bravely send our Tanks forward to certain death. The Spear malfunctions and Berlin becomes Ottoman, as does Hamburg. Boston's Spear malfucntions, too. On the IBT Theory of Evolution is built in the capital, and we learn Space Flight and Syntheic Fibers. We soon take Washington and Philadelphia.

And at this point I left the game on 2/22/2011 for a year of CCM. I pick it up again on 3/10/2012.

We build Apollo Program in 1360 and start building space ship parts as fast as we can.

In 1470 AD Thabit Ibn Qurra shows up, almost too late to be useful. He helps build SETI Program in 001 Horns in F.

Known World 1500 AD

Spoiler :

Only one more part is needed but we have to learn Robotics in order to build it. We learn about Robotics in 1515 AD and build SS Statis Chamber in 1520 AD.

I took some time to create the thread Golden Age Triggers by Great Wonders which lists all Traits and Wonders.

Take time to run the 4000BC At Start save through the HOF checker and it passes.

Now to this start.

A BG to the NW, Goody Hut to the SE and three jungles running NW->SE and a river tile sorta nearby. It looks like it cuts through the jungle 1E of where we stand but I don't think it does. Beyond the jungles appear to be more jungles, ugh. Move our worker 1NW onto the BG and spot a whale, so the water to the west is salty and not fresh. We stand 1 tile away from the coast and 1 tile away from fresh water.

Oh, need to get a list of city names. Google and Wikipedia, got the list.

Move our settler 1SW to be on the coast and still pop the goody hut when we build our capital.

All of this took over an hour, to move two units.

My previous game for Chieftain Tiny Spaceship placed me 10th on the table, not a place I want to be. This one will be better. I played rather sloppily last time and plan to do better this time.

At Chieftain, unlike the other levels, you can run out of money and not be penalized for it. It is 'OK' to be broke. Not an exploit, just a feature of this easiest difficulty level. Automated Teller pointed this out. Spoonwood had many insightful points and I plan to use most of them.

So, onward we go....

03950 BC
Our coastal capital is 001 Horns in F and we learn Pottery from the Hurrian tribe. They sat on a BG. We start on a warrior.

As IND and SCI we start with Masonry (Pyramids) and Bronze Working (colossus).

We start to learn Iron Working for trade bait; 48 turns at 50%; we raise that to 100% and 24 turns, +0 gpt and 10 gold.

Our IND worker mines the BG, 4 turns.

3750 BC
Mining done, now we road.

3700 BC
First Warior is built and he goes exploring. Second Warrior is being trained. 001 Horns in F grows in 5.

3650 BC
BG now roaded, work that tile. Worker moves to the other BG.

3500 BC
We pop a Goody Hut and get another Warrior.

3450 BC
We can support 4 units per city in Despotism and we are at that limit. One more unit and we run at negative gold per turn. But, this is Chieftain, so no big deal.

Switch to a Spear and will follow with a settler. Those two builds will take 11 turns and the city grows to size 3 in 10.

Dyes are just outside our border to the SE. With the Dyes comes a large Marsh field.

3300 BC
Nine tiles to the NE is Incense and further north are Spices. Too far away at the moment.

3250 BC
We start our first settler, due in 6. The capital grows in 6, too. We get a panic attacker from our prime beancounter, which we ignore.

(At Chieftian I can be just like the US government and spend money I don't have! :woohoo:)

3150 BC
We meet an American scout. The Yanks know Ceremonial Burial and everything we know. They are also richer (10 gold vs. 8 gold).

3000 BC
We find Wines to the NW.

Rome has a worker; we buy it for Masonry.

At Start

Known World 3850 BC

My first time (solo) as Byzantine, which seem to have an odd trait pairing. But we get real good starting location. Three BGs in the first 9 tiles, standing on a grassland, two forests, one hill and one floodplain. Incense is two tiles East of where our settler stands. We are next to a river. And on the coast, which is a given for a SEA civ. The only fly in the ointment is the nearby volcano. We need a list, so we get one and our settler founds 001 Casino Royale where he stands. We start an rWarrior. Building the capital expands our borders and we see a second Incense to the east and a cow to the north.

We soon find Japan to the southeast, about 10 tiles away. That feels a bit close. A bit later, in 2900 BC, we bump into the Celts to the northwest. Our second city, L01 Incensed, Mr Bond?, grabs our first luxury. And then we find the Zulu.

In 1990 BC Herodotus decrees that we are the second smartest civ. We get the Republic slingshot in 1910 BC, connect Horses in 1700 BC and build 002 Live and Let Die in 1600 BC. Our first library is built in 1475 BC. We become a Republic in 1100 BC.

In 950 BC Iron from sr01 Iron Hill is connected to the capital of Bonddom (seems nicer than Bondage). 003 Moonraker is built in 730 BC and we enter the Middle Ages one turn later, gaining Monotheism as our free tech. We soon build up to 006 Dr. No (the first Bond movie, as if you didn't already know that!) and in 490 BC Furs are hooked up. In 150 BC Richborough (2) flips from Celts to us and Silks are connected at the same time. In 70 BC 007 Goldfinger, already built, is roaded into. On the IBT Zulus demand Republic, are refused and declare War on us. Zulu (8) vs. Bond People (10).

In 50 BC we declare War on Japan; Japan (7) vs. Bond People (10). We soon destroy Satsuma and Edo in 10 BC. And The Colossus is built in 001 Casino Royale, for the greater glory of Bonds worldwide. Next, we capture Kyoto.

Spoiler :

In 50 AD Osaka is taken. We get our first MGL in 70 AD, who rushes Forbidden Palace in x01 Kyoto. We then capture x03 Toyko, which sits on Ivory. In 130 AD we make peace with Japan for Monarchy, 4 of 4 gold and the city of Nara. In 170 AD we connect Gems, Spices and Ivory, all three from our conquest of Japan.

In 340 AD we build 008 For Your Eyes Only which connects our borders with x04 Nara, and 009 Thunderball that replaces the ruins of Satsuma. L02 Dye, Mr Bond inches us closer to the Celts. In 460 AD our first University in built in sr01 Iron Hill.

We are still at war with the Zulu.

In 560 AD we declare War on the Celts. Celts (12) vs. Bond People (24). We take x05 Eboracum and x06 Verulamium right off the bat. In 590 AD we raze Entremont, where The Great Library was located. This prevents a premature Golden Age. x07 Lapurdum changes owners in 600 AD.

In 660 AD Copernicus' Observatory is built in 001 Casino Royale. In 670 AD 018 Role of Honour replaces the ruins of Entremont and we get our second MGL. Belisarius builds a Horse Army named Belisarius' Bouncers. In 740 AD we connect Saltpeter, next to 018 Role of Honour. We enter the Industarial Age in 760 AD, and are gifed Medicine.

In 830 AD we learn Steam Power but still no railroads. Coal is finally connected in 910 AD; railing begins in 920 AD.

Celtic peace comes in 930 AD; we gain Gergovia (2) and Burdigala (?) in the deal. In 960 we learn Replaceable Parts; one Rubber is already connected.

In 1000 AD we build sr02 Ironic, Mr Bond, on Iron, next to a river and grass.

In 1040 AD Newton's University is built in 001 Casino Royale. It joins Copernicus' Observatory in that city. And we begin our Golden Age, triggered by wonders (Colosus and Netwon's). Shortly thereafter, in 1100 AD, Germinus, an SGL, is discovered lurking in the capital. This SGL diverts our attention away from the Zulus near x07 Lapurdum, which they capture on the IBT and lose the next turn.

In 1300 we build Heroic Epic in L01 Incensed, MrBond? and The Pyramids in 003 Moonraker. In 1160 AD we have and clean up our first pollution. And we build Universal Suffrage in sr01 Iron Hill.

In 1220 AD, the 18th turn of our Golden Age, we delcare War on Japan because we need their grasslands for a geek playground. Japan (4) vs. Bond People (41). In 1295 AD Japan is destroyed as x016 Nagasaki is taken.

At this point Bond People occupy 60.5% of the world's land area; 53 tiles away from an unwanted Domination victory.

In 1320 AD we build Sun Tzu's Art of War in 006 Dr. No.

In 1350 AD we enter the Modern Age; we are gifted Ecology. In 1355 AD we are merely 30 tiles away from Domination. We build Theory of Evolution in 029 GoldenEye and learn Rocketry and Space Flight. We soon connect two Aluminum and Apollo Program is built in sr01 Iron Hill. We start building Space Ship parts.

In 1420 AD Celts (4) declare War on Zulu (8).

In 1495 we learn about Lasers.

Musings
While the Byzantines are in a good position at the moment, we do have some long term issues. Each of the opposing Civs have 2 Move UUs (Impis, Gaellic Swords and Ninjas). And we sit between two of them (Celts and Japan) so we have two borders to defend. We have closed off Japan from the rest of the land, which will lead to later wars. I expect the Celts and Zulus to get on each others nerves and thus leave us alone.

None of the other three are SCI civs, so if we whack one or two we won't be hurting ourselves. Japan's early demise would help our stratgic plans a lot, since we would have only one front line to defend.

We know Republic and need to switch soon. But I want to get our 4th city in place first. None of our cities are truly cities in size, so unit support will be an issue when we revolt.

Is the game winnable? You bet. Could I lose it by being careless? Yeah, you bet.

First solo game on Regent, so this is new ground for me.

My random civ is Inca, AGI and EXP. Not exactly the best trait combination in a fast science game. AGI is handy for city growth. EXP is fine for popping Goody Huts but once all those are found it is useless.

At Start

Okay, it is a starting position. Too many mountains for my taste and a volcano is not a favorite tile of mine. After a bit of exploring we find a Wheat, several rivers (good for growth, bad for movement), two nearby BGs, a BG for another city, a goody hut and some tundra. No luxuries. Not good, not bad; just sorta ordinary and unremarkable. We moved our settler off the Wheat to stand in our current position.

We build our capital, 001 Batman, in 3950 BC. We find Gems to the northwest and Wines and Ivory to the east, with Dyes to our southeast. We meet three different Saxon tribes, who bless us with Ceremonial Burial, 25 gold and Warrior Code.

Starting Positions, 3900 AD

Known World 3000 BC

Spoiler :

We build 002 Superman in 2950 BC on the north coast. We meet the Aztecs in 2750 BC. Two volocanoes erupt around 001 Batman and we lose a mined BG to lava in 2350 BC. 003 Flash (Wally West) is founded in 2310 BC. We meet the Dutch two turns later, courtesy of our first coast hugging curragh, going counterclockwise from 002 Superman. 003 Flash (Wally West) is connected before 002 Superman. In 1725 BC Horses are connected to 001 Batman. In 1650 BC Wines are connected to all cities in the DC Empire. In 1600 BC Sinchi Roca, our first SGL, appears in 001 Batman. We meet Carthage in 1525 BC. None of our neighbors are SCI (sigh). Too bad for us (and them). We build 004 Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and this city claims the Sugar we saw at the start of the game. We build 005 The Joker in 1300 BC and revolt to Republic in 1225 BC. One hundred years later, in the midst of our revolution, the Aztecs demand Literature. We refuse and they delcare War. The very next turn we become a Republic. Volcano 1W-1NW of 004 Green Lantern (Hal) erupts and kills a Dutch city in 1075 BC.

Known World 1000 BC

Spoiler :

006 Robin/Nightwing is on the coast next to 002 Superman (950 BC). In 900 BC we make peace with the Aztecs. Not a bad war; neither side lost any units. We build Forbidden Palace in 825 BC. We enter the Middle Ages in 650 BC. We soon build 007 Green Arrow, 008 Wonder Woman and 009 Robin (Tim Drake). Gems are connected in 470 BC. Our tenth city is 010 Oracle (Barbara Gordon), started in 270 BC. Massive barbarian uprising results in 11 attacks on the capital in 50 BC, in addition to random pillaging of core improvements.

Known World 10 AD

Spoiler :

We begin this time by cleaning out the barbarian vermin around the capital. In 230 AD Furs, our third luxury, are connected. Next turn we declare War on the Aztecs. We capture x01 Tlacopan on the first turn of the war and now Iron is connected. We sign the Dutch and Carthage into Military Alliances against the Aztecs, not that we need their help. But it does prevent them from attacking us due to an MA with the Aztecs. We soon control x02 Calixtlahuaca and x03 Tzintzuntzen and have two sources of Saltpeter inside our borders.

Ivory, our fourth luxury, is connected in 270 AD; Saltpeter in 300 AD. In the midst of this war Manco Capac, our 2nd SGL, is birthed in 001 Batman. We build our first cavalry in 440 AD. Dyes, our fifth luxury, are connected in 430 AD. By 580 AD the Aztecs are a one city civ. In 600 AD we declare War on the Dutch, before they have the UU, the Swiss Mercenary. We take x11 Amsterdam, x12 Arnhem and x13 Groningen in that first turn of conflict and then build 017 Rorschach and 018 Black Canary. In 690 AD we build Copernicus' Observatory in 001 Batman courtesy of Manco Capac, our 2nd SGL, born in 410 AD. This is our first Great Wonder. In 700 AD it is followed by Newton's University is built in 001 Batman courtesy of Sinchi Roca, our first SGL, born back in 1600 BC. We remember the Aztecs and eliminate them in 730 AD. We also gain Incense, our 6th luxury, that same year. We let the Dutch survive until 790 AD. We build 020 Lex Luthor in 810 AD. In 830 AD we have one source of Coal and lay our first rails in 860 AD. 025 Green Lantern (Guy Gardner) is built in 990 AD.

Known World 1000 AD

Spoiler :

The DC Universe is railed by 1040 AD. Leptis Minor (12) flips to us and becomes f01 Leptis Minor in 1130 AD. We have 50 cities in 1170 AD. In 1290 AD Rubber is connected, followed by Oil the next turn. By 1335 AD all terrain inside our borders, except for the five volcanoes, is roaded. That same year we enter the Modern Age, Theory of Evolution is built in 001 Batman and we begin our Golden Age. In 1345 AD Apollo Program is built in 003 Flash (Wally West). In 1445 AD, needing more science farms, we declare War on Carthage. We start the war 43 tiles away from an unwanted Dominatin Victory. Conquests actually bring us to 0 tiles so we abandon an island city to have a 9 tile cushion. By 1460 AD Carthage is a one city civ stuck on an island. By 1495 AD we have built 8 of the 10 Spaceship parts. We are 4 tiles away from a Domination Victory.

Known World 1500 AD

Spoiler :

Two parts to go. Planetary Party Lounge spins up its intergalactic disco ball in 1530 AD, followed by the Statis Chamber in 1550 AD.

First Contact with new civs in Bold.

Luxuries, when connected, in Green.
Strategic Resourses, when connected, in Purple.
Civ name, when war declared by us or on us, in Red.
SGLs, when born, in Red and Italic.

General city names start with a three digit number, followed by the city name, like 001 CommandoBob-grad.
Luxury city will start with a capital L, then a two digit number and then the name, like L01 Spooky Spices.
Strategic resource citys will start with Sr, then a two digit number and then the name, like Sr01 HorseyTown.
Captured cities will start with a lowercase x, followed by a two digit number and then the original city name, like x01 Thermopylae.

When I refer to a civ in this format, Maya (27), the (27) indicates their city count, generally via MapStat. During a turn, this number only appears once per each civ. Generally I use this when war/peace is declared somewhere or we get hit with a trade embargo. It doesn't appear all the time, but when it is used that is what it means.
When a city is in that same format, like Paris (8), the number refers to city size after the event. I use this when I capture/lose a city or when a city flips. In the past it was before the event; from here on out it will be after the event.

Before I hit enter I make all citizens clowns, except for those already geeks. Then, starting from 001 Batman, I begin to reassign citizens city by city. With the Barbarian Horde that came through the capital area, citizen allocation got really messed up.

In Old Aztec we have a lot of grassland for geeks. Need cities down there. Need lots of improvment in the core; the mountains and volcanos have really been a headache.

The Dutch have settled on the eastern edge of our landmass, which is not that far from the Dutch homeland due to the way the world wraps around. Those cities need to go and we need to push the Dutch back a bit. Maybe Carthage, too. The time to do that is rather soon, while Cavalry is supreme.

Dutch war
This will be a two front war whether I like it or not. Amsterdam is closer; it has The Colossus and The Great Library (not useful to the DC Universe since we are the top geeks). And it is rather close, 4 tiles, from 012 Booster Gold. Arnhem would be isolated if Amsterdam were ours. The two Dutch cities to the east, Haarlem and Holwerd, are on plains and an isthmus. I want them so that I don't have to worry about Dutch incursions from that side of the world.

The Dutch UU is the Swiss Mercenary, a 1.4.1, that needs Feudalism and Iron; it is a SuperPike. Feudalism the Dutch know. I cannot tell if they have a source of Iron or not. We have two sources and Carthage has one. No Dutch cities are built on Iron, so we might be lucky.

Enough musing; time to get on with the game.

Theory of Evolution completes in 5 turns.

Golden Age kicks off with the new wonder.
Looks like we will need to research 10 techs in the Modern Age. So about 45 turns away from our Space ship or 220 game years, so maybe, just maybe we launch in 1535 AD. That's our goal right now.

Visited the thread Interturn Mechanics by Lanzelot to confirm/reaffirm that techs are learned before buildings are completed. They are. Which means we will learn Motorized Transportation and enter the Modern Age before Theory of Evolution is built. We will learn two Modern Era techs on that IBT, and kick off our Golden Age.

I was worried that the building of Theory of Evolution would complete before we finished learning Motorized Transportation.
