A Brief Overview of Changes in the Faith
With the rise and the inevitable decline of the Iron Lances in recent years and the betrayal of their order against the Faithful of Beurtgang, Ostava, and Vahlshallah, the Faith has splintered even further and fractured into more pieces, forming and coalescing into new identities and groups, eager to carry out the doctrine and power of the Faith. Sweeping out of the hills of Vahlshallah are the Spotted Faith, from the river flows the Stone Faith, and from the alleyways and dark corners of cities comes the Shadow Faith, all mixing and jostling with the current Faith members currently in Vahlshallah already. With the peace agreement shoved into the faces of the Eastern Faithful nations, and the Iron Lances shattered and standing aside and Vahlshallah cutting off all tithes and funding to the Iron Lances, new militant organizations have been rising and sprouting like weeds amongst the barren wasteland of rubble that was the strong foundation of the Iron Lances.
The Forsworn:
Primarily composed of members of the highly militant Shadow Faith (which makes the Grey Faith pale in comparison in terms of militancy), the Forsworn are a highly organized and disciplined body of soldiers, marching in tune to a different drum. Polar opposites of the Iron Lances in terms of dress, weaponry, and nature, the Forsworn are nicknamed "Dark Angels" in the backstreet alleyways of the Vahlshallahn cities, known for their peculiar dark armor, fanged and spiked. Using cruelly sharpened swords and curved, half moon blades, they are infamous in their brutality and vengeance. Prospective members of the Forsworn swear no allegiance to the main body of the Faith, to the Faelinkriser, or anyone else but the order of the Forsworn itself, and to all true Faithful nations.
Their primary backbone is made up of the
Tal-Sha, or shadow knights. The Tal-Sha use the atypical heavy armor in order to ward off blows by spear, arrow, or sword, and typically wear helms carved in the images of animals, such as lions, wolves, birds of prey, and others of the sort. Tal-Sha are fearsome warriors, and would rather die than break under pressure from enemy soldiers, and are trained excessively well in order to foster brutality and viciousness amongst themselves, to prepare for battle and for war. Underneath them are the
Vrangur, or knights of the long shields; more lightly armed and armored, but wielding larger shields and the sort to ward off arrows and form their infamous Steel Scale formation, the Vrangur are no less vicious or bloody despite having about two thirds of the training and knowledge that the Tal-Sha do, and should not be taken lightly.
Another branch of the Forsworn are the
Aowlands, the shadow assassins that prowl the dark. Wearing hooded robes dyed black and red, they stalk through the shadows before striking down their target. Those marked for death are warned against their actions by a red nine pointed star painted on a piece of papyrus or on a door, or other such things. The Aowlands know no mercy, having been raised as an assassin since birth, to carry out the directive of the Arch-Crowns, the leaders of their order. The Aowlands and the Tal-Sha and Vrangur work closely together when it suits them, and watch each other's backs when able to; it is not uncommon to find a Vrangur force backed up by Tal-Sha warriors on one side, and Aowlands prowling through the foliage and scenery in order to strike down those that would oppose the Forsworn.
A third and final branch of the order is made up of the reclusive and secluded
Hurin monks, warrior priests trained in martial arts and hand to hand combat. It is said that a master Hurin can crush a man's windpipe with two fingers in a pincer formation, and use his staff to impale a plate and bronze warrior upon it before slinging him off. Hurin monks additionally use the winged spear, and other such things in order to keep their enemies at long reach, before closing in to deal a crushing blow to them in hand to hand combat before finishing them off. Typically living in a hermetic lifestyle in the hills and caves around Vahlshallah, the Hurin are scholars and keepers of books and scripts due to the current predicament with the Violet Faith. Hurin scriptmakers pride themselves upon this and are willing kill in order to preserve these valuable papers and manuscripts, as well as copy and illuminate those that were brought from the ashes of Old Valyria, hundreds of years before. Many consider the documents more valuable than their lives, and anyone threatening them can consider signing their own death warrant to try and even the odds.
The Shadow Faith:
Already a bloody and militant force appearing on the scene of Vahlshallah, the Shadow Faith leaders have formed their own splinter of the Faith in response to the Iron Lances decree against the Mandate of Masgard, passed down by the Faelinkriser of the Faith. Clashing with many of the other splinters of the Faith, the Shadow Faith has already made a name for itself in terms of brutality, ambition, and hunger for conquest and glory. Already throwing their support behind the people standing against the Iron Lances and the Iron Faith, the Shadow Faith is supportive and unyielding to the demands of the Iron Prophet Fellip, calling him a heathen and a traitor to his kind. In response to the Iron Prophet's actions, the Shadow Faith has raised their own prophet, Shrike of the Nine Dragons as the Shadow Prophet and leader of the Forsworn.
Spotted Faith:
Men and women of the river waters and farms, descended from a bizarre blend of the Martyr and Grey Faith, have formed a Faith solely dedicated to hunting and killing in guerrilla warfare and such things. Spreading their visionary word of the huntress god vowing to turn the promised land of Vahlshallah to ash if they do not spread the word of the Faith. Clashing with the Shadow Faith and forming their own militant group of the Warriors of Night, the Spotted Faith has become popular in the western fishing hamlets and villages, people incensed by bloody defeats in the west by the Druids and others, vowing revenge. Crewing the third of the Vahlshallahn fleet that was uncaptured after the Betrayal of Nessos, the Spotted Faith live up to their forebearers path in bloody want for war and conflict to exact a painful price of suffering on those that stand against them.
Stone Faith:
Primarily made of the masons and laborers of the Vahlshallahn kingdom, the Stone Faith has found solace in the doctrines of the god of the forge, and have created their own militant group as the others come into conflict with each other over what to do. Worn down by the bloody assaults in the west, and with no less than thirty thousand Vahlshallahn soldiers dead and captured in the Druidic campaigns, the Stone Faith has taken perhaps the harshest stance against the Iron Lances, decrying their betrayal of the other Faithful nations when so many were lost and when so much had been given to them and supported them. The sack of the Grand Temple in Vahlshallah by the Stone Faith members and the slaughter of Iron Lances loyal to Fellip of Nessos only proved that the beer halls and pot shops of the Spire that the Stone Faith frequent are filled with simmering resentment for the Iron Lances and Iron Faith, waiting to boil over and explode in a fury from whatever catalyst there is.
The Knights of Ash:
Backed by the blood and fire of the Grey Faith, the Knights of Ash are seen as silent sentinels, in heavy armor wielding spears reminiscent of the Iron Lances. Disciplined, strong, and indoctrinated into powerful legions, the Knights of Ash are instructed and trained to not break cohesion without first sacrificing everything else, and to hold the line until the very end. Though some would call it foolishness and idiocy, the Knights of Ash are fearsome and perhaps the biggest contender with the Iron Lances and the Forsworn for the dominant Faithful militant organization in the East, with the Iron Lances slowly losing their grip with the sack of the Grand Temple turned over to be used by the Grey Faith and the Shadow Faith. Cruel and vicious, the Knights of Ash are primarily made up of veterans from the border lands with the Teutons, having fought against them for many years and being descended from those that fought that Buggerites and other barbarians, instilling a powerful hatred and xenophobic attitude to those that attempt harm against their order and their nation.
Warriors of Night:
Trained in the art of guerrilla warfare, having been forced to learn against both the Buggerites and the Dragon Horde, the Warriors are perhaps one of the fiercest groups. Having no essential headquarters and being primarily nomadic, they set up camps easily one day, and disappear the next on horseback or on foot, stalking away in the early morning hours in their animal skins and other prizes and trophies of the hunt. Seen as heroes along the western border of Vahlshallah for opposing the Dragon Horde and some periodic incursions into sovereign Vahlshallahn land by small warbands, the Warriors of Night strike quickly and silently like the Aowlands, cunningly destroying the weakest men and army groups that attempt invasions against Vahlshallah.
The Order of Nine Dragons:
New arrivals on the militant scene, and worshipping the newest addition to the Faithful pantheon in the Dragon God, the Order of Nine Dragons or simply Nine Dragons is based around utter bloodshed and viciousness, believing that life and history is just cycles of turmoil and bloodshed, and that if they cause enough it will break the cycle and cause the Songbird and the Dragon God to come forth and bring about a new age. Worshipping him fanatically, they down dragon skull shaped helms and padded leather and metal armor and go into battle seeking to do as their order believes in fully. Though a black sheep compared to the Forsworn, the Knights of Ash, and others, they have shown clear support for the cause of destruction of the Iron Lances in Vahlshallah and assisted in the Sack of the Great Temple and the purge of Iron Lances that stood against the Vahlshallahn kingdom. Deployed to the Teutonland, the Nine Dragons are vicious and not at all saddened with a clear enemy in front of them to fight while they bide their time and simmer with hatred for Nessos and the western Keltians and druids.
I have seen it as such, that no organization or order that believes that the people of Beurtgang and Vahlshallah are not of the "true Faith", and would side with our enemies and condone the slaughter of Faithful brothers and sisters in Beurtgang if we do not comply with their demands, is worthy of our respect or our tithes, donations, support, or assistance, no matter how deeply rooted they are in our culture, in our people, and our hearts and minds. They have turned their backs on us, and we will turn our backs on them. Twenty five thousand Vahlshallahn soldiers have been killed, and a fleet burned at anchor while the survivors trickle back towards Hamburg and Pommerania, Danyria and Kentus, fleeing from the scourge of the druidic demons that all were supposed to stand against. We will not tolerate this, and nay, we shall not; henceforth, the Iron Lances within our lands are
disbanded!
-King Sirius at the Spire
Mark my words and mark them well, when the Dragons try to sweep over our lands and the Teutons rise in rebellion and try to overthrow our border, it's going to be bloody. And when that happens, we'll be first in line to slice them open, and see if those petty little Lancers are made out of tough stuff, or if they've become as soft and weak as their heads.
-Unknown Red Faith Commander, before the Eve of Ash
Funny thing, I was told tonight by the leader of the Violet Faith that they would be leaving to Ildaris to find sanctuary there. They asked for safe conduct and passage out of the nation. I laughed at him and told him that I couldn't help them at this point; that perhaps they ought to send a bird to Condate or Nessos asking their friends to help them in their plight. He visibly blanched and backpedaled sputtering, muttering how the Faelinkriser and how Fellip would hear of this. He was about to leave when a quartet of Forsworn dragged him out to the balcony overlooking the Palace square, above the screaming mob of Faithful; Stone, Grey, Shadow, Martyr, Fanatic, Valarian, so many different ones allied together in one moment. The Forsworn picked the screaming man up and hurled him into the crowd, and they descended upon him like crows, like ravens, screaming "Collaborator! Collaborator! How does it feel to save your own hide!" Somebody picked up a stone brick and bashed his face in with it, so much that it was hard to tell who he was when we sorted out the whole mess, and by that point, Spire was wrapped in riots as the White Faith and the Violet Faith were taken into custody to protect them from the mobs that were sweeping through the city. More than a few Ildarian men and women who moved to the city were killed as well, poor bastards; never meant any harm at all, and it wasn't their fault about any of it, but the mobs weren't in a caring mood.

Gentlemen, the time has come. You have your orders, your doctrines, your tactics, your plans. This is merely a formality.
Execute Directive 696.
