As y'all may have heard, Portugal is confirmed with their leader being Maria the Pious, the first female leader shown in Brave New World.
Capital: Lisbon
Language: Portuguese
Leader: Maria of Portugal

Unique Ability: Mare Clausum - Resource diversity grants twice as much :c5gold: Gold for Portugal in International Trade Routes

Unique Unit: Nau - Can sell Exotic Goods for :c5gold: Gold and XP; :)c5production: Cost: 120; :c5moves: Moves: 5; :c5strength: Strength: 20; Melee naval unit which excels at sea exploration. It has more :c5moves: Movement than the Caravel, which it replaces, and can perform a one-time ability next to foreign lands to earn :c5gold: Gold and XP. May only be built by the Portuguese.

Unique Improvement: Feitoria - Lets you take a share of whatever resources your neighboring City States are producing (get double the amount if they are allies; unlocked at Navigation)

Spoiler :

Portuguese description

Nau - Sell Exotic Goods: This unit will sell its cargo, earning :c5gold: Gold and XP. More will be earned from selling farther from your capital. This may only be done once with this unit.

Feitoria - Construct a Feitoria ... 5 turns (Z): Constructs a Feitoria in this City-State's lands. It will provide to you one copy of every Luxury Resource type connected by this City-State, regardless of your relationship with the City-State. Also provides a defensive bonus.

If I missed anything, please put it down. I'll update it ASAP. So what are your thoughts on this?

I wonder if she will put here face up really close to the camera and scream like a maniac when you ask her for a trade. Or maybe her head will rotate and turn green like in the movie The Exorcist?
We can only hope.

Not really a specialist in Portuguese history, but judging from what people are saying, may not have been the best leader choice.

Nevertheless, I liked very much their unique unit and improvement, their ability should probably be on the same line.

If they imitate the carrack (U.U. of the portuguese in civ IV) we may have the first ocean navigating unit of the game again in the hands of the portuguese.

Some more information about the Nau! :)
To me, it looks like that the Nau can "Sell Exotic Goods" when adjacent to a Feitoria built inside a City State's borders. Doing so gains you money and XP - the farther it is from Lisbon, the better!
It can only be used once per Nau, though...

The Nau also has two promotions that I don't think the Caravel has, but someone please confirm what they are...

Also, the worker is clearly building inside the City State's borders, so it feels like this will be a very interesting Civilization to play as!
Being that the Feitoria is still under construction, yet the Nau can already sell it's goods, it might be that the port gets built immediately, and the rest of the Feitoria's bonuses come once it is finished building.

This, however, makes me believe that is not Portugal's UA.
There is no reference to Portugal suposed bonus to international trade routes in there, so unless it's just with City States, something is fishy with that description...

Awesome! I made a bet with my friend over whether or not Portugal would be in, so now i can rub it in his face how im so smart with my predictions! but on a more gameplay oriented note, im a big fan of Portugal in civ, and this version seems like it'll be very fun to play as, what with it being the only (known) trading focused civ, and therefore giving a unique playstyle.

Maria I of Portugal >> João VI of Portugal >> Pedro IV of Portugal or I of Brazil >> Pedro II of Brazil.

Brave New World family tree. :)

The Worst Parts

Leader Choice: Terrible (1/10)
Analysis: The Anouncement of Maria, the Mad as the Leader of Portugal Made Myself Very Disapointed. An unsucessful, unwhorty, non-iconic, out-of-theme Leader, with a small Historic Relevance, among various deserving, sucessfull, iconic, themed Leaders as John II, Dinis, Afonso Henriques or John I. The only reason for the inclusion of Maria I, seems, at least for me, the quest for a balanced number of Leaders in terms of Gender, in the Brave New World Expansion. Maria is not an Historical Relevant Leader, is conected to Brazil, and Represents one of the most Dark Times of Portuguese History, a period of Recession and stagnated Development, as well as some wars, with France and others who broke the country into ruins.

The Colors and Icon (4/10)
Analysis: Even considering that Firaxis had to make an icon different than the Brazilian, and the Blue and White Colors represent Portugal, the icon seems like incomplete. Seriously? What about adding a shield and Seven Castles... No, Firaxis? And also, Blue and White is way too similar to Carthage. I'd rather see a Red and Green, Red and Blue Color Scheme...

I think you're overreacting a bit... The colors and icon are clean and great.

Maria I is a great excuse for introducing a new female leader, and those "iconic" Portuguese leaders were used before (Henry the Navigator in Civ 3, Joao II in Civ 4, Manuel I in mods for Civ 5). I like this choice, it's fresh.

And the icon is simple, but striking and telling enough. It's clearly Portuguese, but it isn't as overblown as the full coat of arms. It was, really, the only choice available when Brazil uses the "iconic" armillary sphere and the cross of the Order of Christ.

Besides, the Portuguese unique unit, improvement and ability are going to be great.

Can't agree with you there - Dark Blue on White make perfect sense for Portugal. They were the colors of the Portuguese Monarchy, even being the prominent colors in our flag, and not the Republic of Portugal's Red and Green.

The five Quinas are also an integral part of the Shield of the Kingdom of Portugal (and it's flag), and were even once the entirety of the flag. Sure, none of those flags were from D. Maria I's time as queen, but the five Quinas were always a part of the flag. They work great as a symbol for Portugal - it's easy to recognize and identify, yet with a simple design that fits nicely in the small icon.

Carthage has both a different background color and a different foreground color - I'd worry more with Greece, personally, but if we can have, say, America (White on Dark Blue) and Sweden (Yellow on Dark Blue) or France (White on Light Blue), then having a few civs with white background is no big deal.
Not only that, but your suggestion of Red on Green would be too similar to Ethiopia, don't you think? We have a LOT of civilizations, now! It's normal to step on each other's toes once in a while. The other games were much worse when it came to similar colors too, so this is better than anything, really! "Is that Egypt, the Zulus or the Inca?"

Finally, why Red on Blue? Isn't that Korea's color scheme?

I think it was the French article that said the UA is additional gold for trade routes. That's pretty much the same wording as the current Arabian UA, albeit with different trade route types. I wonder if that means Arabia is getting a new UA too.

i like the idea of the Nau/Feitoria combination. It seems very historical and immersive. My only concern is that wouldn't you need to bring workers with your fleets to build those improvements in foreign city states? That could be a little wonky.

As for Maria, I'm no expert but from her wiki she doesn't seem like a great choice, it's a pretty obvious "we need more female leaders" type of thing.

Yes, yes you would - but once those are done, not only can you gain an immediate lump of gold if you brought a Nau with you (your workers need an escort!), as you can continuously build Naus to go there - assuming the city states don't destroy your Feitoria (which I hope they don't, or maybe only destroy if if they are angry with you - otherwise it'd be annoying).

Now I ask - any reason to build any more than one Feitoria at the farthest City State there is? I guess a few backups would be nice, in case of emergency, but if the farthest City States gives more everything, then why would you build anywhere else?

She did a few things for the country - she sent scientific missions to Angola, Brazil, Cape Verde and Mozambique, and founded the Sciences Academy of Lisbon, the Royal Public Library of the Court (now National Library of Portugal) and Casa Pia (to help young kids who lost their parents and to give work to homeless after the Earthquake of 1775).

But I do agree they choose her mainly to have one more woman, and well, it's... ok...
