I agree. Viva la not Wilson!

Things are simple. Conservatives should accept the right of communists to switch to communism if they want to, and communists should accept the right of conservatives to switch to free market if they want to. Limiting the power of future politicians generation is an action against democracy and the source of extremism left or rigth. In final analysis that's how democracies work, majority rules, the present.

The problem is that once we go from leftist interventions list social-capitalism (which I'm fine with) to full hard-line command economy communism, it will be very taxing on our stability and economy to return back. Sometimes, the logical extreme of a system is not very logical, and this is one of those cases.

The leading campaigner for the now banned Socialist Labor Party met Debs as his term came to an end to discuss a lasting peace between Socialists and Communists. Comrade Adhiraj Bose, who evaded arrest by hiding under an alias in the Indian embassy in Washington, came out of hiding. The two discussed on theoretical and political questions for four long hours and charted out the skeleton of an agreement which would be aimed to bring peace between the radical and moderate wings of the Socialist Party and hopefully, end the present state of anarchy in the USA.

The Radical Communists and Socialists would discuss with the Democratic Party's Wilson wing to strike a binding agreement on the following points :

1) The Radical Communists would shun violent tactics of conducting riots, boss lynchings and propaganda among armed forces which conducted a near mutiny during Wilson's term.

2) The radical communists will agree to keep the operation of the market forces for small and medium scale enterprises but will demand the nationalization of the largest corporations and the largest banks which will be regulated through a system of public accounting. The management of these companies will remain for ten years under the same bosses who manage it now, but a gradual transition would be made to a self-organized model.

3) factories which had been put under worker's occupation during the strike wave under Wilson's administration would be converted into cooperatives with support from state funds. The same model would be used to convert the largest factories like Chicago Gary into a cooperative over time.

4) Reimer be released and the ban on the Socialist Labor Party be lifted as well as other radical communist parties.

5) The internment camps, or whichever ones remain but shut down and the special secret police created during Wilson's administration be disbanded.

6) We have a binding agreement with all parties, that there will be no deviation from the policies the present Debs administration, there would be no rollback to conservative capitalism, and welfarist and socialist policies should be continued. As well as the foreign policy of non-intervention in the civics of foreign states.

7) A mutual guarantee be signed between Communist and Capitalist parties, that there would be no vindictive action should either come in power and refrain from any victimization of the opposition as was done under Wilson's administration.

8) Radical Communists will seek to implement Communism in America without any retreat from the republican democratic system we have. All other civics shall be subject to possible change should a Communist or Socialist candidate come to power. Likewise, no capitalist candidate would be allowed to retreat from public welfare or chose a free-market or mercantilist system.

Lastly, the two worked out an idea for a united front between the Socialist Labor party and the Socialist party which will propose a single candidate voted from the party congress with an agenda that reflects both of our aspirations. To this Debs agreed as the best way to keep the unity of the leftist movement in the USA.

With this agreement, a visibly fatigued Comrade Bose made the admission with a heavy heart. "I was the one solely responsible for the rigging of the elections. I had done so without the knowledge of the party leadership, I had employed the services of Chicago gangsters to achieve my end. I was fearful of your reforms being reversed should Wilson come in, I was afraid that conservative American capitalism would return, something that we had worked so hard to destroy. Forgive me comrade, for my actions many innocent socialists were victimized. Don't blame Reimer for this, for this was entirely my own work.

I also take responsibility for inciting the strike wave which had hit the USA. But for that, I have no regret, America was being dragged into another false war. Wilson was opening concentration camps and implementing a dictatorship ! I had to stop this by any means necessary. I had visited Mahatma Gandhi for guidance in that most critical time. He and the Indian administration had agreed to help us in this struggle." With this admission, the two agreed to make a public appearance where Comrade Adhiraj working hitherto under the alias of Sohan Singh Bhakna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sohan_Singh_Bhakna), timed together with a condolence visit by Mahatma Gandhi and the radical Socialist Subhash Chandra Bose to the USA. In his last administrative act as US president, the US and Indian leadership would agree to a binding partnership and a declaration of non-interference in each other's affairs. After all, it was the forced civic change by the Wilson administration which had triggered the assassination attempt and a whole chain of events.

Debs also realized the massive power and influence of the American underworld. Before leaving he vowed to draw out a plan of action against them for the future administration to implement. He also declared a ban on gambling and closed hundreds of casinos across America. Many of which were running as fronts for gangsters based in Chicago and New York. Comrade Adhiraj divulged the name of "Lucky" Luciano from Chicago as the one who had organized the electoral rigging under his request.

Oh dear, now I kind of feel responsible for Debs not running again because of the pressure I put on him to stop groups like the KKK.

Sorry, comrades, hopefully the next leader will do something to heal America's internal bleeding.

How is that meant to be a compromise? Does compromise mean something different in this alternative timeline??

Debs isn't running because he's getting old. Also, the compromise seems nice. I like it.

Debs is 70. It's good that he's retiring. Another term and he might have a heart attack or go senile during it.

Its not a compromise so much as a list of demands!

It is a little "demandy" but it's the best we have to keep some amount of peace between capitalists and communists!

Plot twist, he was actually senile the whole time! :p

de·mand
diˈmand/
noun
noun: demand; plural noun: demands

an insistent and peremptory request, made as if by right.

verb
verb: demand; 3rd person present: demands; past tense: demanded; past participle: demanded; gerund or present participle: demanding

ask authoritatively or brusquely.

i don't think his compromise was a demand, it might have been a one-sided suggestion, but not a demand

The Compromise is too lopsided towards the communists. I propose the following compromise instead:

1. An liberal egalitarian system of government organization will be utilized, regarding workers and corporation owners as equal (in-game terms: Adopt/keep Egalitarianism as Organization civic)
2. Public welfare programs such as healthcare, building construction, scientific research, and others will be solely the role of the government, not the corporations (in-game terms: Adopt/keep Public Welfare as Labor civic)
3. The federal government shall take a very strong role in regulating corporations (especially for environmental purposes) and ensuring that workers' rights are respected, but will NOT make the economy a command economy like the more radical communists wish. (In-game terms: Adopt/keep environmentalism as economy civic)
4. The government civic will remain a Republic, the religion policy will remain Secular, and the military policy will be left to the discretion of the executive branch. (In-game: The other 3 civics will remain the same, with the military civic to change as needed)
5. Both Conservatives and Liberals must pledge to stop with the radical mudslinging/violence and must agree to reasonably discuss and try to reach middle ground/compromise when there is a conflict of opinions.
6. All imprisoned politicians shall be released from prison, with the exception of Reimer, whose sentence will be reduced to one year, ONLY under the condition that they swear not to cause any more problems. Radical communist parties will still remain banned until the radical communists show that they have improved their ways.

This compromise does not make the government a complete communist economy (what the capitalists don't want) but keeps the best elements of both into a moderate, pseudo-socialist republic. It also releases the political prisoners and will unban all parties once the prisoners have shown that they will not cause any more trouble.

The economy should be allowed to be command if that is what the people want.

Roughly half of the people want a capitalist economy, roughly half want a communist economy. This is a stance in the middle, with several communist/socialist elements (harsh government regulation of corporations, which is as close to a command economy as the other side will be willing to go, socialized medicine, science, and healthcare) while still retaining the very basic structure of supply-and-demand economics.

Besides the very basic definition of a compromise is when both sides give up some of what they want in exchange for getting others. The communists give up a full command economy in exchange for corporate regulation, nationalization of many public services, and the release of all of the political prisoners. The capitalists lose private healthcare and other private services and unregulated corporation and also have to release the prisoners in exchange for an economy that still has supply and demand. Both sides get some of what they want.

OOC: This is aimed at creating something similar to OTL 21st century Sweden, which has many socialist elements but still keeps basic supply-and-demand. It has been proven to be more effective than extremes of either side (Communist Russia on the left and Gilded Age America on the right).

OOC: Maybe another reason Debs isn't running for president again is because he died in real life in 1926. But you know death hasn't stopped everyone, just look at Jesus Christ.

You know, technically speaking, only the Social Labor Party was banned a.k.a only radical socialists have been banned as we haven't had an official Communist Party.

Also, the ban on communism was lifted ages ago so that's a moot point.

ok, we all need to agree to vote for only one socialist/communist president

who do you guys think it should be?

i think William Z. Foster is what the party is looking for
