Design Thread - For Discussion and Review

You know, they've been there for quiet some time... It looks "spamish" because I was pretty much the on!y one active for about a week.

Not really, 39 of the civ designs in this thread are yours - significanly more than anyone else - the majority of which have already been done by other modders. If thats not spammish I'm not sure what else is - you can see why it would dissuade some people from discussing all of them compared to the people which post a design fairly rarely and have a chance of being turned into actual mods.

Hey, let's get a bit more cheerful here - I feel like France has been neglected by the civ mod communtiy, it needs some love! This has nothing to do with my vacation in France!

The Kingdom of France

Louis IX

Rex Christianissimus
May discover Relics when capturing cities owned by heathen civs. Gain Piety from adopting :c5culture: Social Policies.

Arbalist
Provides Piety upon construction, unlike the Crossbowman it replaces. Heals every turn when Piety level is Devout.

Gothic Church
Available later than the Colosseum it replaces. Yields +2 :c5faith: Faith and has a :greatwork: Great Work of Art or Artifact slot. As long as all cities have a Gothic Church, a :greatwork: Great Work of Art or Artifact slot will be spawned if there are none available.

Relic
An Artifact that yields :c5faith: Faith instead of :tourism: Tourism. The chance of discovering a Relic is increased based on your Piety level, for every follower of your State Religion in it and the further it is away from your Capital. Upon discovering a Relic, you may choose to keep it, which provides a small Piety boost, or leave it, which provides a small Piety loss.

The Kingdom of France

Francis I

Nutrisco et Extinguo
May purchase cultural :c5greatperson: Great People with :c5gold: Gold. +5% :c5gold: Gold in all cities for every Declaration of Friendship and Peace Treaty active (up to +50%).

Gendarme
Available earlier than the Lancer it replaces. Gains XP upon construction based on the city's :c5gold: GPT.

Palais
Weaker than the Castle it replaces. After its construction, it will once spawn a :greatwork: Great Work slot of the right type the next time each of the cultural :c5greatperson: Great People is born.

The Kingdom of France

Louis XVI

Siècle des Lumières
:c5greatperson: Great People trigger a 'We Love the King Day' when born. Naval and embarked units have +1 :c5moves: Movement for ever city celebrating 'We Love the King Day'.

Vaisseau
Provides :c5greatperson: Great Scientist points in the Capital from uncovering Fog of War, unlike the Frigate it replaces.

Grenadier
Gains a combat bonus (+15%) when attacking, unlike the Musketman it replaces. This bonus is doubled when within two tiles of a friendly naval unit, and further increased when on a foreign continent.

Louis IX:

Interesting design. I like how it works pretty much exclusively with P&P. One thing about the Gothic Cathedral that I just thought of is when you capture a city and get a Relic and you have no slots, technically another slot won't open up because the newly conquered city doesn't have a Gothic Cathedral. Obviously it isn't intended to do that and I'm just nitpicking the way it's written :p. Solid design though, I like it.

Francis I:

Simple and synergistic. I particularly like this one and can see it being made as it looks really easy to code. If I had to pick of these to actually be made it would be this one.

Louis XVI:

First of all, I think it's a little weird that Louis XVI would get his own civ considering, you know, how bad he was. Anyway, I have a few questions about this one. For the UA, does the WLTKD happen in all cities for just the city where the GP was born? The naval movement will probably need a cap, especially if the WLTKD is in all cities. I think the Vaisseau's ability would be better for a Caravel, seeing as they come first and specialize in exploration. I've no idea what a Vaisseau is and I'm guessing it wouldn't make sense as a Caravel replacement but I just think it fits them better. I'm seriously confused as to how no one has made a Grenadier UU. It's a good unit though, could have really high attack strength but I guess the fact that it doesn't transfer to defense kind of balances it out.

Yeah, obviously the newly conquered city wouldn't be counted.

Eyy, thanks. I am quite satisfied with this one too. Louis IX is one of my favourite historical characters, and I feel this design represents him as the popular ideal for a Christian king.

I was actually least happy with this one because there were so many aspects of Francis' reign I had to keep out! Exploration of the new world, his work to strengthen the French language, religious persecution... But hey, thanks.

Louis may have been a bad king, what with his indecisiveness, but he was not a bad person. I have a soft spot for people who try to do good things, or who have suffered injustice. Louis XVI falls under both categories, and for that reason I kinda want to see him in civ. This is actually the design here I am the most satisfied with too.

The WLtKD would only happen in the city the Great Person was born in, of course.
Vaisseau is French for Vessel and is supposed to represent (mostly) the expedition of Lapérouse and (to a lesser extent) the ships of the line used in the American War of Independence. The ships in that expedition were made into Frigates for that purpose, so I thought they would be better off replacing them, which would help representing the ships of the line too.

Yeah, maybe a cap would be an ok idea.

Designs are... Interesting. I sometimes forget how many kings named Louis France actually had.
(But isn't the Louis XVI design a bit too... Strong? I mean, I usually have 10+ cities entering WLtKDs. That's would make embarked units faster then planes.)
(That UA would fit my playing style though, so I like it)

How the hell do you get 10 cities to be celebrating WLTKD at once? I barely ever get 10 cities at all...

How the hell do you get 10 cities to be celebrating WLTKD at once? I barely ever get 10 cities at all...

Yeah, I've only achieved this when playing wide with Rome with E&D I think..

@Walrus: you should visit the Paris history museum. I remember I was there about 5 hours. The first interesting museum I've been in. :D

@Hoop Thrower: Oh, I thought he meant to write "city ever" because there's no y. Silly me...
(But I do remember that I had about 6 cities in WLtKD. In fact, I was about to invade an island at that time.)

@Urdnot: glad you counted. I didn't really. And I didn't ask you to give me feedback for each and every one of them. When I said "ignoring", I meant that nobody have been in this thread for a week(though I still posted), and when everyone do come back... that feels like a huge, huge waste of time. I would have probably did the research anyway, but it takes time to make the actual design. Especially with African civilizations...
Also, I mainly said that because nobody noticed my Qing and Sokoto designs, two civs which haven't been made(and I didn't see any designs for). And my Songhai split(which is similar to yours, but I tried to make it different).

And... I have to finish my India split:

Kingdom of Mysore(Krishnaraja Wadiyar III)
Spoiler :
UA: Kings of the Art
:greatwork: Great works grant a lump sum of a appropriate yield whenever a :c5greatperson: great person is born, and generate :c5culture: culture per each era passed since their creation if stored in wonders. National Wonders Contain a cultural specialist slot, that provides extra yields when worked.

UU: Missile trooper
More suited for fighting against units(26 :c5rangedstrength:) than the cannon, which it replaces. Has lower bonus vs. Cities(100%), but receives bonus when attacking against land units(50%), and additional 50% bonus when fighting against cavalry. Generates :c5science: science from kills.

UB: Wodeyaran temple
Replaces temple. Has a random great work slot. Yields +1 :tourism: tourism after flight, doubled if the slot is filled.

So I had a weird idea last night:

Modern Egypt
Leader: Muhammad Ali Pasha
UA: Nahda: Great People spent before Medieval Era create antiquity sites in your territory. Landmark Improvements in your territory spawn an Ancient Ruin next to them.
UU: Fellah: Replaces Longswordsman. Can attack twice in a turn and be turned into a worker for free.
UB: Egypt Institute: Replaces Museum. Has no base culture yield, yet it makes all Landmarks in city territory produce +1 Culture and +1 Tourism. Has 2 Great Work of Art Slots.

---------------------------

So at first I was thinking on how a Modern Egypt civ would look, then I got an idea for Egyptology, which I know wasn't of particular interest to Egyptians themselves but nonetheless I wanted to see a civ centered around archeology and the Nahda kinda fits for that. After that I realized the UA only worked from Renaissance onwards, which is kinda lame, so I tackled something that would feel flavorful by having an UA that only works on Classical era... and I added a powerful Medieval Era UU to round things up, leaving this cluster of a civ you see now. :crazyeye:

Opinions?

Hmmm... I see some mistakes(or oversights, dunno) in there:

1. Ruins that weren't looted until archeology become antiquity sites(at least that's what happened in my last game).
2. Making improvements yield tourism and culture is a bit pointless, as hotels and airports convert culture from landmarks to tourism(to some extent).
3. UU: you mean I can use him as a worker, or he actually becomes a worker? And does the "attack twice" stay with upgrade?

1. I've seen Ruins late, like really really late in the game, so... huh?
2. Yes, but this is a Museum, which comes much earlier than both.
3) He actually becomes a worker. The attack twice, I think yes, given that it's a promotion. Maybe it should be able to excavate Antiquity sites too, as a Grave Robber, though that'd give the unit odd AI, maybe only able to detect ancient ruins?

1. Oh wait. I think this only a actually happens if the territory belongs to a civ. (But that's me and the awful amount of mods I use).
3. Why would I make a unit with this promotion(blitz) a worker?
(And Maybe it should gain gold from discovering ruins and antiquity sites, and from ending the turn on them)

Good points, let's revise:

Modern Egypt
Leader: Muhammad Ali Pasha
UA: Nahda: Great People spent before Medieval Era create antiquity sites in your territory. Landmark Improvements in your territory spawn an Ancient Ruin next to them.
UU: Fellah: Replaces Longswordsman. Can detect hidden antiquity sites and gains extra combat strenght when starting a turn in an antiquity site of any type. Furthermore, it can be turned into a worker for free.
UB: Egypt Institute: Replaces Museum. Has no base culture yield, yet it makes all Landmarks in city territory produce +1 Culture and +1 Tourism. Has 2 Great Work of Art Slots.

---------------------------

And while I'm here here's another by-product of a night of feverish dreams...

Heian Japan
Leader: Fujiwara no Michinaga
UA: Elite Society: Earn Culture equal to half the Science produced per turn while researching technologies from prior eras.
UU: Yabusame: Replaces Crossbowman. Costs more to produce and counts as a cavalry unit, having 2 additional movement points. It also possesses the Accuracy 1 Promotion and Generates culture from kills.
UB: Shoen: Replaces Garden. +25% Great Person Generation. Costs no Maintenance and Generates +1 Culture from Farms worked in city.

Beelining civ FTW?

FTW? Also, OP. In so many ways... Especially with Mandirs from P&P.

so... After reading, and reading, chewing gum, and reading, I got this:

Second French Empire(Napoleon III)
Spoiler :
UA: Re- establishment
Buildings built in the :c5capital: capital before the industrial era yield +1 :c5production: production upon entering it, and half of the :c5production: production cities receive from railroad connections is added to their :c5food: food output. :c5trade: City connections reduce :c5unhappy: local unhappiness by 10% and grant :c5gold: when a new :c5citizen: citizen is born(doubled with railroads).

UB: Department store
Replaces stock exchange. Converts 10% of the city's :c5production: production into :c5gold: gold, and grant +1 :c5gold: gold per each :trade: trade route sent to the city.

UU: Zouave
Replaces rifleman. While in non- friendly territory, receives a combat bonus the closer he is to an :c5war: enemy city (max. 33%), and heals when you conquer a city.

French Indochina(Jean Decoux)
Spoiler :
UA: Breadbasket of Asia
Chopping forests\ jungles may spawn a source of tea, coffee or rubber resource, which provide double quantity and yields in conquered cities. Followers of your religion may be spared upon :c5occupied: conquest, don't increase resistance time and grant :c5culture: culture upon completing a :c5faith: religious building in their city.

UU: Foreign missions society
Replaces missionary. Grants an :tourism: influence boost upon converting a city, and may be garrisoned in a city to increase religious pressure of your religion(doubled if the city already has garrison). If captured or killed from attrition, receive a combat boost against the civilization that killed him equal to the amount he converted.

UU: Bayard- Class
Replaces ironclad. Upon attacking a city, neutralizes all Citadels and forts within 2 tiles of the city, and deals damage to all adjacent units. Has the cover I promotion.

*if used with ExCEa and more luxuries, first part of the UA is: plantations have double yields in conquered cities, and rubber, coffee and tea resources provide double quantity.
**yields(without mods mentioned above):
Coffee and tea: 1 food, 1 gold. 1 production if improved by plantation.
Rubber: 2 production. 2 gold if improved by plantation(but no food).

Interesting Napoleon III design. This is my personal one:

UA: Liberal Empire: The Capital gains a 5% boost to production for every city connected to it and connected cities also gain +1 production. Roads cost 33% less.

UU: Zouave: Replaces Rifleman: +2 movement when embarked and starts with Amphibious. 20% combat bonus when fighting on foreign continents.

UB: Grande Ecoles: Replaces Public School. +20% boost to Great Merchant, Scientist and Engineer production.

I posted this a few months ago so I haven't changed it nor do I plan to since someone announced they would be doing Napoleon III 12 days after I posted my design using the same UU and UB that I had posted and was then offered art by one of the best artists on this forum.

Anyway, Indochina's fine I guess. I can't really think of anything to say about it.

I rather like Natan's Second French Empire, though I'd cut one of the two parts of the UA, feature creep and all that...

As for Indochina, double quantity feels like overkill. Once again, the UA could use some simplifying. The Missionary Society sounds more like Temple replacement material too.

Perhaps, but:

1. Overkill? But the chance to get those resources is low, and you need to give up science from jungles, and chop them, which on standard takes 6 turns IIRC(with pyramids and liberty :p). Add that to the fact you also need to improve the actual resource- and that there are only 3- I'd say its not that bad.
2. No... I mean, they didn't really build\ do anything unique, but they were a casus beli of sorts for the French. And I probably should've added decisions, I had pretty good ones.
