TSG 122 Opening actions thread

My initial build was Scout x2, Monument, Shrine (because a religion CS left me 2 :c5faith: away from a pantheon), Granary, Great Library.

I went for a three city start. Slowed a bit because I moved my escort warrior to the wrong tile and my first settler was captured by a barbarian. Ended up settling cities 2 and 3 on about turn 70-75 after getting the first settler back.
Spoiler :

I am going for a blended Liberty/Piety social policy path. I will save the Liberty closer for a late game GS bulb.
Spoiler :

I am making a beeline for Education. Here is my tech tree at turn 100.
Spoiler :

I meant to put a screenshot of my religion here too, but I forgot. I have already enhanced my religion. My choices were Religious Idols (extra :c5faith: and :c5culture: for all the gold tiles near my cities). Pagodas, Feed the World, and Religious Texts round out the beliefs. I will get Jesuit Education with my next social policy.

I wanted to conquer the neighbours early using war chariots. I started with two scouts due to the Highlands map. There were lots of ruins, but too many maps showing barbarian camps and, so far, no weapons upgrade for the scouts.

Because mountain passes are often blocked by lakes Optics was important even with no large waterways. My fourth city is north where I hope to build Colossus and Petra.

Other wonders were Temple of Artemis, Great Library and Pyramids. Policies were Honor, Liberty up to the worker and settler, and then Patronage. I need to complete the right side of Honor.

All the AIs are going straight Liberty and none are accumulating faith. I had a city-state in awe of me for getting two faith per turn.

None of the AIs have any money. I'm barely staying out of debt by selling one iron for two gold any time an AI actually has two gold. Most of my savings went to upgrade my Swordsman and Composite Bowman.

I'm about to get the Terracotta Army and that will increase my expenses significantly. On the other hand I hope to defeat Carthage and Babylon while I've still got extra happiness.

I'm still looking for Mt Kilimanjaro. It must be hidden among all the other mountains.

- What did you think about before starting the game, what was your approach to this game?

Liberty and Wonders, because it's Egypt and Prince. I forgot how awesome Prince level is.

- Did you spend much time doing reconnaissance before settling?

Moved my warrior up one tile and saw more Gold, and settled right in place.

- Where did you settle and what did you build first?

Right in place, went scout, monument, scout, worker, Great library-pyramids-great library. I timed great library to go straight into National college and got it before turn 50.

- How did the terrain and map settings affect your early decisions?

Didn't affect me much, just slowed me down a lot movement-wise.

- What were your initial priorities?

Wonders and Workers, as many as possible as quickly as possible.

- What tech path did you follow and why?

I wanted masonry first and figured I would get writing later, but ended up getting it from a ruin and went for Great library shortly after. GL is a giant noob trap, but not on Prince and as Egypt! I got it in 10 turns and timed it to snag Philosophy and Nat college. I swept down to metal casting to build workshops and am working my way back up to Education.

- What Social Policies did you choose?

Almost all the way through liberty, saving finisher for Notre Dame, Pisa, or PT. Probably won't need it though, I am miles ahead in tech. Opened Commerce and took Mercenary army. I may have to open Piety so I can build shrines and temples and actually get a religion if I am not in renaissance after I get to mercantilism in commerce.

- How did not using Tradition affect your game plans

No Aristocracy for Wonder-spam!!!!! That and me having to build and manage more than 4 cities.

- What Wonders did you try to get and did you get them?

Got Great Library, Pyramids, TOA, Failed stonehenge because I wasted time on it, Oracle to open Commerce.

- Did you go for early Faith? How did you use faith?

I took the pantheon to build wonders faster, because I am Egypt and want to build every wonder in the game. Not succeeding, but oh well. I need to do something about my lack of religion though, I built a shrine to get the wonder pantheon and didn't bother with the UB yet even though my people are miserable. May need a little in Piety.

- Any surprises?

So many barbarians, they are always in my way! I wish I was the Huns, war chariots are great to spam but they are useless in hills. The Huns are my people, and their horse archers are ten times better on a map like this!
