the contest is 'open end'
i will update the
SCORE TABLE | Hall Of Fame
the Number One in the SCORE TABLE / hall of fame
will be that CFF member who lands his SS on Alpha Centauri
earlier than anybody else.
if more contestants' Space Ships
reach "ALPHA CENTAURI" that same (earliest) year
the SCORE and Percentage will make the difference - of course...
Code:
RANK Civ.DOS.1.Fanatic - Centauri Date - SCORE / % - DATE

INSTRUCTIONS
we (just) take
this as
START situation:
3860 BC
EARTH map
CHiEFTAiN LEVEL
no techs, no units, one city each civilization

iMPORTANT:
Your Space Ship is already build 'in orbit' and ready to fly,
you just have to build

1.
The Apollo Wonder

AND

2. an Additional HABiTATiON MODULE

to LAUNCH it -
this is in need to cause the game a flight time of
a minimum of 20 years (...a little more... 20,2 years or so)
SEE >>> http://www.civfanatics.com/gallery/files/3/4/8/4/3/SpaceRaceContest-Ship.jpg
because the turns of the game before 1 AD are 20 years.
EVERY FLiGHT-TiME LOWER
THAN "20 YEARS" WiLL CAUSE PROBLEMS
SCORiNG YOUR GAME (in THiS competition) .

Build that MODULE first
and
LAUNCH the S.S.
AND
save your game after that (= BEFORE "next turn")
and it's all good...

Russians, French and Babylonians start with
  • 50 GOLD
  • NO TECHNOLOGiES (no 'pottery' - i did delete this with an editor - so you have to invent it) :)

1. SAVE your GAME at that POiNT of the game where you did LAUNCH your spaceship already
and the game -did- confirm that your Spaceship is LAUNCHED (black screen).

2. Build city improvements with your spare money to improve your civilization's score before you LAUNCH your ship

3. Set your LUXURY to 100% 1 turn before you SAVE your GAME
to get a better score!

.
.
.

How i will SCORE the results on 'problem savegames':

1. i take your CiV DOS savegames.
2. i access the file at that point -
access the turn left to do - LAND your spaceship on Alpha Centauri -
after that
i 'retire the game' to read out the YEAR / SCORE / PERCENTAGE you did hit.

3. i cause the replay txt with civ.exe 474.01 shift-56
to post the replay.txt as CODE here.

Spoiler :
(OLD & GONE)
3. then i access the file again at that point and use an editor
to *kill* the french and/or babylonians
to cause the game for the replay and replay.txt
next turn.

(...after 'erasing' the civilization(s) left
the next turn starts like this:
'french / babylonians are destroyed by barbarians.
you did conquer the world')
4. i attach the modified savegames here that everybody can access that savegames
- animation
- replay.txt
- powergraph

...after that
i write the results into the SCORE TABLE.

some people may fake/cheat/rewrite every log file,
every gamefile -

but
AFTER Your SpaceShip ... ... ALPHA CENTAURi
(or as well regular end on end-date, conquering the world and so on)
there is a replay.txt logfile 'given' by the game itself
that show/proof what's exactly 'going on' in the game
(incl.
the 'moving maps animation'
and the 'powergraph')

-the original savegames' powergraph is a good indicator if somebody did cheat-
further you can't -for example- buy cities secretly
(after using a money cheat)
because these actions are visible in the replay.txt game log

you may create and analyse your opponents 'replay.txt'-gamelog yourself when you access their savegame on your machine -
another important point there is the TECH TREE - so we may see if somebody did cheat technologies, so better don't try... :D
play clean. :king:
expected cheats some lines later...

(Show) REPLAY and 'write replay.txt' is available when you did win the game by spacerace
(what's easy to do in this game)
at the same position where RETiRE is located
so everyone here can cause the CiV.1.DOS game to create this
- replay.txt game log(s)
- powergraph(s)
- moving maps animation(s)
himself/herself. :)

...by the way:
the simplicity of that
"Russian", "3860 BC", "3 Civilizations" at "Chieftain Level" on "Earth"
based game
avoid the most 'benefits' of the Shift-56 cheat
and many other known cheats that are worthless in this case... :D
Shift-56 (sometimes shift 1 to 8) cheat,
' only available in v1.0 = 474.01 '
was the player-test mode for the Microprose game testers.
Refresh the map after pressing Shift 1-8 (by moving the cursor or pressing t twice)
and you will see the map of the whole world.
You can click on the cities of other players and unfortify their troops and sell their city improvements

F7 shows the development profile of each civilization, all their advances, and if they already have a vendetta against you.

F8 shows the powergraph and allows you to see a replay up to that point.

F9 shows numbers representing the attack points, defense points,
and 3 of the cities the computer uses to calculate battle, on each continent (along with giving the size of each continent in land squares).

F10 shows a complete world map.

The other function keys sometimes do their normal functions,
but they mess up the display a lot of the time.
Just a word of warning.

USE THESE CHEATS
  • ' SAVEGAME CHEAT ' (save a game at critical phase or everytime, load the save game again
and try any action again and again until the result satisfies you -
for example the hut change to a city,
you win the fight against an opponent ...and so on...
    )
    The Save Game Cheat
Apart from the obvious reasons for saving regularly. It is well known that the computer cheats when it comes to World Wonders. They appear to be awarded randomly to any city the computer likes. If one gets awarded, it is possible to go back to your last save, and the chances are that it won't be awarded again for a while.

Another use for the save option is when you are having problems attacking your enemies because of an uncooperative senate.

    * 1. Have a revolution
    * 2. Attack whoever you wish
    * 3. Save the game
    * 4. Reload it
    * 5. You will be prompted for the type of government you require
  • ' WATERBRiDGE CHEAT ' (use a ship and up to 2 settlers to build railroad tracks on water -> additional trade/science/happy points on water squares)
    The Settler/Railroad at Sea Cheat
Have a settler in a ship.
    Command the ship to "U"nload.
    Command the settler to "R"oad.
Click on the ship. (I'm assuming you have a mouse)
Click on the settler's icon in the pop-up, "waking up" the settler
Press some key or click elsewhere to clear the pop-up (I press "R")
Go back to the step of commanding the settler to "R"oad.
Once the settler completes a phase (road or rail) the ship underneath
it must move once, to make it willing to start again.
I find it best to use *two* settlers; for each sea square one builds
the road, the other builds the rail; then move the ship. With two ships
and a ship movement cheat (q.v.) there is no theoretical limit to how
much of the ocean can be railroaded in a single turn
    ---Bob O'Bob
  • ' SETTLER CHEAT ' (start any 'settler action' over & over again until (for example)
the road is build, the hills change to mines, the jungle change to grassland, the grassland is irrigated in one turn
    )
    The Settler Cheat
Most settler functions take from 2 to 12 turns to accomplish. Any of them can be accomplished in one turn by putting the settler a square, pressing R or M or I or whatever, clicking on the settler to make it blink again (which seemingly aborts the function) and pressing R again. Keep repeating this process until the road or irrigation is finished. If you turn on the End-of-Turn feature, this helps you perform the desired function in one turn. Otherwise you could just keep some nearby piece blinking so that the turn doesn't end before you've milked the cheat for all it's worth. Irrigating swamp takes 10 or 11 turns so this cheat is real handy.
the reason(s) to name these cheats is
that those cheats are not visible (just waterbridging, of course :D )
you just might guess that some contestants/opponents did use the savegame cheat or settler cheat, but that's all...
so
you have to savegame cheat, settler-one-turn cheat , maybe waterbridge...
Period. :king:

Principles:
1. Build as much cities as geography makes it easy to
2. Enlarge your cities with "we love president".
3. Dont discover sciences (fix science rate=0%) unless all your cities had nothing profitable to build. Make money and buy improvements.
4. Build the improvements in all your cities in the same turn so as to be able to modifiy tax/lux/science rates with maximum effectiveness. ex: cathedrals in all cities + MC in the same turn so as to reduce lux rate.
5. Accumulate gold before building science improvements. Build them and fix science rate=100% in the same turn [or 80-90% if you need luxuries])
6. Build all happiness improvements and wonders when needed so as so lower luxuries to the minimum
7. Note that if you build many cities, wonders who apply to all cities are VERY profitable (HG, Oracle, MC, BACH, NEWTON, SETI, HOOVER, CFC)
8. Conquer your continent as quickly as possible or find an isthm easy to defend. Then, you'll be able to reduce military expenses.
9. Build caravans so as to build the wonder the turn after the science needed discovered
10. Never discover communism. People are ... ... content and productive in the reign of religion and M's Chapel

Discover spaceflight, plastics, robotics, and build Apollo Wonder.

For spaceship to launch, you must build at least:

3 modules (1 habitation, 1 support, 1 solar panel)
More habitation modules makes better score!

2 components (1 fuel, 1 propulsion)
More components reduces flight time and increase prob of success.

~15 structurals
Structurals are needed to "link" the modules and components to make them work.

Notes about that savegame:

Savegame just after i launched. Press enter to end the game.

As the flight time is 20.0 years, the SS effectively lands and the replay is displayed.

There are some strangenesses, which i think are due to the Goldberg's 3860BC savegame (that i used, of course):
- the SS was partially built when i built my first SS structural. (I completed it so as to get a flight time of 20.0 years)
- there is a small discordance between the year in the game and the replay years. Also, the civ quizz and the autosave were in 3060BC and 2060BC (instead of 3000 & 2000BC).

There are some strangenesses, which i think are due to the Goldberg's 3860BC savegame (that i used, of course):
- the SS was partially built when i built my first SS structural. (I completed it so as to get a flight time of 20.0 years)
yes. :goodjob:
i did build the "RUSSiAN SpaceShip" before (cheat mode)
to look what will happen when it starts and lands
to be sure about the savegame results
- this is kind of status quo for all players,
so it won't 'hurt' in the conquest.

there is a small discordance between the year in the game and the replay years. Also, the civ quizz and the autosave were in 3060BC and 2060BC (instead of 3000 & 2000BC).
yes. :goodjob:
it's part of a time cheat to test this possibility too.
the game 'remembers' every time cheat internal
so it's impossible to cheat the game by setting an earlier time in the game after playing the game for a while.

carniflex,
A couple questions

1)How did you manage to get multiple advances in a single turn?

2) How about some more detail I see you have the options set for AutoSave. So you must have the 3000BC & 2000BC save files.
In fact I'm sure we would all like to see save files ever 10 moves or so. As it only took 117 moves it's only 10 save files.

sorry for the delay -
i just found time today...

% = what should be done
@ = STATUS QUO
§ = questions / comments
Code:
3860 BC: "START"
@...game is set to 100% 'Money'
%...set game to 100% science (?)
@...game is set to research ALPHABET
@...moscow is set to produce SETTLERS
@...moscow is at size "1" for the next 3 turns

3780 BC: RUSSIANS PRODUCE FIRST MILITIA
§...question:
§...if you would stop production of settlers for militia
%...you could produce your first militia in 3840
%...to go earlier the already visible hut
%...where "Berlin" 'once' was...
%...and find genoa-hut earlier beside?

3680 BC: RUSSIANS DISCOVER HORSEBACK RIDING (!)
§...how is this possible / what did happen?
i presume
carniflex 'found' HORSEBACK RIDING with the militia unit
in the hut (located on WOODS terrain)
near the place of the destroyed "Berlin"...?

but -
if moscow did grow to size of 2
(no settlers were build?)
alphabet might be invented much earlier;
money at 100% makes no sense in this stage of the game.

so i presume
that carniflex DiD build the settler first to found the city of carnigrad with it? :)

+ 100% science (no lux needed because of chieftain level + temple + cathedral + MC chapel + coloseum + BACH in all cities + no tax needed because some taxes were stored before having set the science rate at 100%)

Your dates are not regular:
1. 3780BC (first militia built) in the replay == 3840BC when i was playing the game
there is a discordance of 60 years.
i think this explains the autosave were in 3060BC and 2060BC

examples:
event game year replay year
beginning of the game 3860BC 3800BC
first militia built (*) 3840BC 3780BC
Space flight discovered 1760BC 1700BC
Appolo was built 1740BC 1680BC
The SS was built and launched 1720BC
The SS landed 1700BC

(*) there was yet more than 10 shields accumulated in Moscow in Golberg's 3860BC savegame. I changed the prod from settler to militia.

Goldberg said:
§...if you would stop production of settlers for militia

3870?
I changed production for militia in 3860BC (3800RY), and it was built in 3840BC (3780RY)

Goldberg said:
3680 BC: RUSSIANS DISCOVER HORSEBACK RIDING (!)

Right. I found it in a hut.

Goldberg said:
"i presume that carniflex DiD build the settler first to found the city of carnigrad or genova with those settlers?"

Wrong. Moreover, i meant genoa (ligurie), not genova.

the saves:
1760bc = civil0
1740bc = civil1
1720bc = civil2
1780bc = civil3
3060bc = civil4
2060bc = civil5

the saves (part II)

the saves (part III)

it doesnt work.
the civil2 (the last save) is however available some posts before.

note:
you have to rename the saves for them to work
for example:
civil0map.sav = civil0.map
civil0sve.sav = civil0.sve

yes - thx for the hint - i think so too -
so i take what the game 'says'
to compare --->
alpha centauri: year 1700
and the score and percentage at that point (finish the game after SS at AC to get SCORE at civilization screen and percentage at hall of fame).
.
.
.

the whole confusion of messed up dates (f.e. in the replay.txt it's time string)
is sadly caused by the possibility
that some people won't get a replay.txt / replay animation
after starting and landing their SS successfully.

but it's in need
to

damn. :D
how did you manage to get 15 libs and 15 universities at this point of time?

you will need up to ~7-8 marketplaces (or more?) to maintain that for some moves at 100% money
and
after that some moves at 100% science.

keep that in mind, folks.

I built my first library after having built (for centuries ;)) my 15th bank. :D

carniflex said:
... ...
I built my first library after having built (for centuries ;)) my 15th bank. ...
good hint.
i always thought that this might not be possible to get those things all together
(sometimes i get lost in the game)
but
it's more like
*build temples to grow up cities
and
*sell (~15) temples when (~15) banks
and
j.s.bach cath. are buildt?

just guessing 'for the direction'...

next point:
(i mean) you don't get 15 cities in 10 turns -
in this contest game you get ~ 12 cities by the huts in the game
on EURO - ASiAN continent
all other huts are placed on wood (= science, units, money or barbarians)
(african cities make no real sense in the SS contest in this case)

those ~12 cities are -when 'collected' by savegame cheat (mostly)-
in different stages
moscow may be at "4"
up to 3 cities at ~"3"
the rest at sizes "1" or "2"

do you start with 50%-70% LUXURY
when the first 2, 3 or 5 cities are at "3" population
to grow them up soon as possible?

i see that all this is possible
but there's always a problem to get EiTHER the science OR the money OR the cities growth....

GoldBerg said:

I dont understand this statement.
what are the "things" you are speaking about ?

GoldBerg said:
*sell (~15) temples

sell these temples that make 2 contents for only 1 tax ? Are you communist ? ;)

GoldBerg said:

Wrong.
I got only 5 cities by the huts. The 5 first. (Good old cavalries !) Moscow was already built. The 9 others were built with settlers after.
Note: you can see in the 3060BC save i'm building many settlers.

GoldBerg said:

Yes. :goodjob:
When the first 4 cities had 3 citizen.
Note: you can see in the 3060BC save that 50% lux (or so) is set.

Think again...

carniflex said:

i type about getting temples, marketplaces, banks, libraries, universities, all that wonders
grown in 10 or more cities before ~1000 BC.
i tried often
but i never did get that 'work' -
under the preference to use savegame cheat and settler cheat.

well - in this (special) game
it's SURE possible before 1 AD
but
this is (just) a special prepared savegame
to get things compared
not the usual situation in a usual
- PRiNCE level (or higher)
- "strange planet"
- 7 tribes
game
(although i love to play earth from time to time -
it's in my view the better looking map
compared to ~98% of random generated ones by game...)
carniflex said:
... ...sell these temples that make 2 contents for only 1 tax ? Are you communist ?
no, no 'commee' -
and if, would you 'care'?
i don't think so.
PLEASE:
keep that kind of sarcasm where it (maybe) belongs (in your world).
at least we just discuss here something like
a 'perfect scientific / economic CiV.1.DOS game'
and nothing else.

i hope this is in your interest too.

i just did figure out a possible question of gameplay
(CiV.1.DOS is far away to be a 'perfect simulation' of economics & politics, we know)
sell temples to get money and save money-to-spend.
otherwise "we" (guess who's "we") may build courthouses, colosseums as well - but why
if the whole thing may work without them at CHiEFTAiN level?
.
.
.
.
by the way:

it seems that contest here
seem to discourage the forum members.

maybe some other contestants
should've tried with their 1 AD SS at AC
and would've discussed here their results before.

if the first contestant (carniflex)
just starts the contest with a 1700 BC result
it seems to be like a GAME OVER for the others here.

well - i'll try next when i get the SS at AC before 1 AD
to show up that that's not 'a shame' -
maybe other forum members will follow...

I think you're wrong.
In my opinion,
1. Size 19 is efficient (because one city with 19 citizens and one market is more efficient than 19 cities with one citizen and 19 markets, because of the cost of the markets)
2. With cities with 19 citizens, temples, cathedrals and colosseums are efficient even at chieftain level. Moreover, such improvements are better than luxuries (even coloseum): coloseum is 3 contents for 4 tax. 3 contents would cost 6 luxuries (not 4).
You can see in my 1700BC savegame that i have cities with 19 citizen without luxuries.
6 native-contents (chieftain level) + 2 (temple) + 3 (cathedral) + 3 (MC) + 2 (BACH) + 3 (coloseum) = 19 content citizens.

PS: Sorry for the "game over"

at least the whole game is about
the most economic 'points'
turn-by-turn
where to change
to city growth (50% -> 100% LUX)
or
to force SCiENCE (100%)
or
to gain MONEY (100%)
as you wrote here ('PRiNCiPLES') --->
http://forums.civfanatics.com/showpost.php?p=2600636&postcount=3

but in the start phase most people (including myself) will maybe make mistakes like
buy marketplaces, banks 'to early'...?
(i type this because i think
that a start-combination of libraries / marketplaces maybe will cause better results...?)

but
it's sure in need
to develop marketplace (bronze, currency)
and library / libraries (alphabet, writing)
and bank ( alphabet, code of laws, literacy, republic, trade) 'techs'
first
to generate the money for universities, colosseums and cathedrals
and help to finish the wonders newton, michelangelo and j.s.bach (if caravans and production-in-city will take too much time) earlier?

additional
there's 'the problem' to 'wait' until cities grow to the size of "3"
until every city who need settler(s) will 'get' / be able to maintain that settler(s)
to generate ROADS (trade, money, science, happy) and irrigation
and
have that fast population growth
together with " WE LOVE..." under REPUBLiC/DEMOCRATiC gov
and
not to lose population ("3" back to "2")
while producing SETTLERS -
additional this only makes sense when at minimum 3 cities have the chance to grow some turns
(step 1
maybe until "10",
after that buy AQUEDUCTS)

that's very tricky; 'fine-tuning-the-game' part...
.
.
.

I never set 100% lux (excepting 1700bc for the score),
it is:
either 30-50%, during I love president periods.
or 0%, else.
No lux is ever lost just to maintain order. (Temples etc. do for a lower cost)

cathedrals

colosea
libraries
Newton

Buying shields for wonders or military cost TWICE buying shields for improvements. I never buy wonders.
I plan the construction of the caravans so that they reach the city (that will build a wonder) the turn after the science needed for the wonder is discovered.
For example, I built caravans for Newton centuries before Theory of Gravity was discovered.

in between there's 'the problem' to 'wait' until every city who need settler(s) will 'get' / be able to maintain that settler

You have not to wait for that.
Cant you imagine a solidarity between cities ?
A settler can be built by a city, maintained by another, and can work to improve a third city.

have that population explosition

I think many cities may quickly get 3 citizen without irrigation and without settler.
Then grow to 4 with lux.
Then build settler.
Then grow to 4 with lux.
Then build settler.
etc.

One key is to anihilate the "food cost" of the city growth valuing the settler thanks to the luxuries.
Another is not to reduce the time needed to grow to 3 because of the food maintaining cost of a settler built too early.
