As we go along the road to eccomnical recovery my proposal for the next few techs would be (in no particular order and assume we get calender, polythesim and monarchy in trades and finish machinery next turn)
monotheism, organised religion could be a big help at this point, only problem is the high price tag and our already straining ecomony
Literature, Great Library would increase science specialist and National Epic would increase the amount of great people
Feudalism, leads to guilds, which gives us grocers and provides us we the possiblity of vassalge and serfdom although these civics are proberly not needed at the moment

Those are just some of my thoughts for now, please coment and add to anything

I'd say Literature->Paper

There is not really any need for OR. WE could just make use of Equus Aurum's monastery to build missionaries, as seen in the attached thumbnail.

I generally switch to OR for the +25% building production. That could be very useful in getting our couthouses and marketplaces out.

May I urge you guys to poll this quickly. I intend to hold a turnchat session this Friday.

are we ready for a poll?

But it is not really feasible now given the state of our economy. OR has high upkeep which is really a burden given our population and number of cities (41 and 8 respectively).

Plus most of our new cities do not have the production and population to build courthouses and markets to reduce our financial burden.

See attached thumbnail. (domestic advisor)

I feel that literature would be best to research next

Because we may not get monarchy and polythesim i was thinking of researching them next

Update:

We'll get Monarchy in 2 turns. A trade is scheduled which will get Calendar.

Available techs:
  • Polytheism (3)
  • Drama (9)
  • Philosophy (21)
  • Paper (17)
  • Compass (11)
  • Engineering (28)

Potential strategies:
Divine Right (Spiral Minaret -> 1g per Confucian building worldwide) - 65 turns
Military Tradition (Cavalry) - Music path (31) + 145 turns
Liberalism (Free tech) - 145 turns
Lit->Music (Great Library, National Epic, Great Artist) - 31 turns
Optics,Astronomy (find and trade with offshore civs) - 95 turns

I'd say we should go and get monotheism, I believe the organized religion civic would be very useful to us, we have a number of cities which need to develop infrastructure and that +25% production for buildings will help a lot once we get our religion spread.

I didn't see any good orders for techs. Joe Harker said that he might want to go for literature, but as the Great Library had already been built, that made no sense. Therefor I chose Paper. It's on the road to more important medieval techs like education and printing press.

That was my thinking, even if we didn't get the great library, (which we haven't) then at least we could then go on to research paper and education!

Literature is not needed for either Paper or Education ;)

Compass->Optics all the way. You have to get out there and meet the other civs.

Well put, Conroe. The after that I suggest we try and get Education as quickly as possible, followed by Gunpowder (and Military Tradition).

They'll meet us soon enough any way. We should go for continental domination first, by researching economical and military techs. Anyone interested in beelining for Democracy?

Going straight for democracy is an interesting idea, I'm a bit divided about what we should do in the short term though. Getting printing press quickly is clearly important for the development of our cottage economy, but it might also be good to go for optics, find the other civs and act as a middleman in intercontinental tech trades, similar to our early move with alphabet.
