Many Leaders Game 4 - The Cultured Monarch

Thoughts...

The wonders are interesting. I'm intrigued as to the reasons behind Shwedagon. All the religious civics are already open to most games, was it for the culture and priest points? Also intriguing is Apostolic, again is it to try and stop an AI victory or just culture and priest points. The Great Library gives great benefits but does tend to overpower your GP production with scientists. I always think long and hard about this one (but I'm going only GA points this game).

pawelo still is out in front but the chasing pack is catching up.

As for the third leg, it pays to be yellow and industrious it seems  .

All games seem very winnable from here, so have fun in the next round.

Seems that the legs haven't loaded well...

In hindsight, I would say that the GLib might has been an error, especially in the capital. As for the AP, it pays off to have it, especially when preparing to run Sistine supported culture expansion ;)

Sorry for the lack of comments, I'll catch up soon - been pretty busy lately :D

Hmmmm, they were loading fine earlier. If they don't come back, I'll re-upload.

Got them well this time - may have been a problem on my side. Well done for the stats - must have been a big work :goodjob:

Good to see the CS Sling still pays out (though FINnergy and a well executed rush are boosting pawelo at least as much).

Ozbenno is lording the Caste System categories

I'm leading in pop but still running Slavery :crazyeye: The only city I think I underwhipped was Konya because the rest re-grow like weeds (I even 1 pop whipped a Settler in this set).

I must say I don't get the scale of the third leg: if each artist is 4000 culture then something is awry.

Good luck to all in the next round!

I must say I don't get the scale of the third leg: if each artist is 4000 culture then something is awry.

For example, my three cities (as per F8) had 2490, 800 and 600 culture (they didn't but this is just an example ;)). I have two artists, therefore if I bomb the artists I get my three cities at 2490, 4800 and 4600. So my third leg is 2490. I just use the 4000 culture from the GAs to up the lowest culture city in an attempt to show the potential. As all these things, a huge grain of salt applies.

@ everyone and anyone

i am interested in the reason for 'resting' a great artist, i've been considering the bombing vs settling of a GA but the only reason i can see for resting a GA is if you are unsure which cities are going to be your legendary ones.

is this correct?

Though I never rest a GA, this is the only reason I can see.

Experience says that early settled GA pay off more than the bombing ones - 12 :culture: is before all bonuses apply, with three cathedrals, broadway or alike and broadcasting tower, it simply becomes huge.

thought i'd missed a super duper Oz Tactic:lol:

On the wonders:

AP - I really like the production bonus - especially as my main 3 cities will be getting 3 religious buildings from the main faith. The other reason is to play diplomatic games with the AIs.

GLib - it will pollute my GPP pools. However it's not in my intended NE city. It gives a good pile of culture. It also gives a nice boost to science. My plan is to hit my science goals as fast as possible.

Shwedagon Paya - I have no idea why I built this. Don't need it. I picked up my game after a break and saw it half built. It confused me. Think evil pixies must have been meddling with my game while I was AFK. :)

MoM - intending at least one more golden age. Possibly 2 if my GPs turn out not to be artists.

That's certainly true, but the real trick is to get the blanket finish for all three legends, so the judgement call is how far ahead the big two cities will be over each other, and especially over the third city, in the end game.

I tend to settle too many artists and end up wishing I had one more to hand to bomb in the end game, so this time around I'm saving all but the Music freebie to see how it pans out.

ach du lieber!

will play catch-up hopefully today.

the only question is: do i wait until before or after pw01?

@pholk

PLAY BOTH
If you have to choose, do PW first ;)

I must agree with oz - no way to understand the paya in this game, aside for the culture provided.

As for my wonders, I think I'm just addicted to the GLib. AP + Sistine + Sankore + Spiral is my goal, as I think about running a religious economy until the end (see if it works...), and aim for an early end. I am ashamed losing SoZ - this monument requirement I overlooked is just stupid... Easy GA points, plenty of culture and Statue @Joao was a lame move of mine.

Great games going on - amazing how many different ways people took to the cultural victory :goodjob:

The GA farming was well done to all who achieved it, I may try to get two or three of them settled in the next turnset - I'm a great fan of settling rather then bombing, even if I catch your point. In my last cultural victory - my three legs managed to achieve the victory at almost the same time, without bombing.

Btw, 40 or 50 for the next one ?

Jooooooooooooooooooaaaaaaaaaaaaaooooooooooooooo !!!!! , France's de Gaulle, 4th round (800 AD - 1300 AD)

Spoiler :

Well, as no other info was given I played 40 turns up to 1300 AD. When we left the French they just got rid of Tokugawa, but found themselves hemmed in by Ultra - REXers Joao and Roosevelt. Especially Joao settled very bold right to my borders, even stealing the Marble spot and settling nigh to my 2nd Leg at the gems spot. This insolence must not go unpunished ! Therefore as I went down the Drama -> Music Path for the Sistine I made my plans for the inevitable. And quite a lot happened during these turns. A little teaser:

Battle Stats:
Units victorious while attacking : 12
Units victorious while defending : 15
Units defeated while attacking : 8
Units defeated while defending : 7

But firsrt the art of slaying had to wait. Not only because I had to ensure sistine first, but also because the war with the Japanese was grievous in terms of losses. Some proof I was not ready yet:

In the other games so far the free Music Artist went away quite quickly, whereas I had a shot at it even unto 800 AD. As I was some turns away however it happened:

So much for the freebie. Well, I nonetheless finished researching Music - for unlocking the Sistine of course. The problem is that I have no Marble, and I don't know how advanced the other AIs are yet. The good news was that Roosey didn't know Music yet. In Ozbennos chart I was last in total beakers as I lacked techs for trading (unlike others who had managed to bulb Philosophy). Therefore I had to wait long for my chances.

This trade was made solely for one purpose: war. I need Cats and War Elephants ASAP. I then picked up Calendar in a trade with Joao. Better getting some value out of him before destroying him...

I also met a new face. Another relentless techer...

He got quite bold afterwards and came demanding. That one ensured that I finally adjusted my EP spending.

Popped another one™ ! As things stand I would've been more pleased to get this one in Kyoto or Paris, but I'll take what I get. At least there is now some production at Tokyo.

Even without Marble I managed to finish this one:

The payback bill is made ready.

Time for a little private talk, my dear Joao.

You REXed me - NOW I'm gonna BARREX you !

The first target, coincidentally home of the Shewdagon Paya built some time earlier. Well those hammers would've been better spent on defense...

Meanwhile Hannibal is getting more and more on my nerves. I think he just has written "Cleave me!" on his head...

Well, as said earlier, Joao has Longbows already. But I have Catapults. Lots of Catapults. (Kyoto and Paris both churn out units at a pace of 2 every 3 turns)

The new aquisition comes with a Courthouse and some other stuff too. Nice !

And finally I settled the Iron/Corn/Marble spot in the Northeast.

Got a useful event with Roosey. Yay, almost free +3 !

The french onslaught is advancing. Here is the next target, better defended and on a hill. Therefore some bombardment needed first. Note also my Great Spy for intelligence.

The stats:

Conclusion:

I'm quite pleased with the progress of this turnset. In 2 turns I will be able to field Maces, and then the fun will really begin... I did not achieve anything with religions (Taoism founded by Joao, Islam by an unknown Civ), but I don't need to. I'll take Taoism from Joao anyway. Now let's hope my next GP is the Priest for the shrine (48% chance)... I do think I'll get out of the techhole quicker now, the war with Joao will hopefully yield me some nice cities.

Imhotep
