SGOTM 12 - ChokoMisfits

I'll need to look at the save tonight about 10 hours and put my turnset plan up. So I guess Astro from Lib is the main plan. Other thing settle GS or bulb/academy?

Wow. I was not expecting to see us get the Mids this late. Amazing, really well done turnset hap!

(I just got out from under the weather but now am heading down for the American holiday of gluttony with my familiy. I expect to continue to be somewhat awol until that is done with at the end of the week. I'll spend some time at work today updating the first few posts.)

Well another look at the save. Only Ghandi has optics atm so won't get it from him till someone else knows it. No-one is near or started Edu so will be safe with Lib. I'll carry on banking cash and slowly tech towards Lib. Still tempted to give Roo gp for compass + cash and another tech though if we bank cash we'll be ok. We should be able to use gp to get guilds or engineering so will check screens every turn.

HS? As we are already in serfdom will the HS help speed up our workers? I think the answer would be no but anyone have any ideas. Now a wonder which is still available is the MoM and if we go for some late game Golden Ages that will be a boost so would suggest going for the when we have marble settled. I'll keep IvoryBeef and Copper Town on military the other cities will continue there builds as most won't finish in my turnset. Where they do I'll go for granaries or workers.

One city that does badly need settling asap is IvoryPig so will send a worker there to clear fallout asap and try and find a settler from somewhere really needs to be cap/ivory or coppertown though and I've already made them busy. :)

GS will be settled in cap. Missionary to Marseilles.

There doesn't seem a lot to do in my turnset. Safe from Mao. Churchill doesn't have any iron and can't settle behind us with closed borders. Note Liverpool!! Option to keep or raze when we get it through culture. Although can we culture flip in this game? I presume so.

I'm looking to play in about 24 hrs so thoughts welcomed.

Only Ghandi has optics atm so won't get it from him till someone else knows it.

Are you sure Gandhi won't trade Optics without anyone else knowing it? Gandhi's Monopoly Technology threshold is only 20%. He knows only five other AI. I now suspect I'm wrong about it being 1/5 = 20%; forget to count Gandhi which would make it 1/6 = 16.6% which isn't enough. Does anyone know how to calculate the percentage for a Technology? Is the denominator based on the number of Civs an AI knows or is it the total number of AIs? The numerator should be the total number of AIs that the AI knows of that know the Technology or its just the straight number of Civs that know the Technology? I think its the former in both cases.

Again, I strongly suggest we take this trade from Roosevelt (that other Technology should be Theology in my opinion, so we can build The Hagia Sophia):

Theology + Compass + 430W for Gunpowder

Note that Roosevelt has 440W, so we know that this is the best possible deal we can get from him this turn. We are only giving up 10W for Theology which is a much larger Technology than Aesthetics. Plus Theology unlocks The Hagia Sophia.

I suggest we start The Hagia Sophia immediately this turn, right after the above trade with Roosevelt.

HS? As we are already in serfdom will the HS help speed up our workers? I think the answer would be no but anyone have any ideas.

Yes, of course it will boost our Workers by +50%, so with Serfdom, our Workers will be boosted by another +50% or +100% total. That would allow our Workers to build Roads in a single turn for good flat Terrain (Grassland, Plains); it may be enough to reduce Fallout clearing by 2t for all terrain; I'm not sure of the exact turns for tasks other than Roads.

Mausoleum of Maussollos is available, but how many Great Ages will we manage to start. We are certainly making no attempt to get Nationalism so we can build The Taj Mahal. How many Great People will we have in the Space Ship part build phase and can we generate enough different Great People to start a Great Age with 3 Great People, 4 Great People. We will be lucky to start a 1 Great Person Great Age through a 3 Great People Great Age. We could get a 4 Great People Great Age, if we use 2-3 Great Generals, since they come from a completely separate generation system than all other Great People (aside from the free ones associated with certain Technologies.

I'm fine with chasing Mausoleum of Maussollos if we don't have something better like The Hagia Sophia to build.

Aside from Roosevelt and Churchill, not many Leaders are building Great Wonders. That's probably why so many early Era Great Wonders were available until recently.

We need more Workers than we need Granaries. Also, some Cities don't need a Granary. They will get to Happiness cap without a Granary just fine. Otherwise, Granaries would be useful for whipping, but we probably don't want to switch between Slavery and Serfdom, since the Anarchy could get expensive, unless we're able to do useful whipping in nearly all Cities while in 5t of Slavery.

There doesn't seem a lot to do in my turnset. Safe from Mao. Churchill doesn't have any iron and can't settle behind us with closed borders. Note Liverpool!! Option to keep or raze when we get it through culture. Although can we culture flip in this game? I presume so.

You will need to keep alert to good trading options. Complete 3 more Universities for Oxford University ASAP. Build Courthouses in all Cities except possibly Capital. Build Markets in high commerce Cities or Cities that need extra Happiness.

We need a Military Technologies soon, so we can be building units that won't become obsolete so fast. Musketman are great defenders for now, but they will become obsolete quite soon. Guilds would be a good near term one (Knights can be a good anti-pillaging unit). Military Tradition would be nice, but significantly off our Space Colony bee-line. Rifling fits well. Steel would be good and early Cannons are extremely devastating to Civs that are not much past Castles, Knights, Pikeman, Crossbowmen and Longbowmen.

Keep building Musketmen in CopIronRice and IvoryBeef.

The option "No City Flipping From Culture" is selected. In the Game, you can press F8 "Victory Conditions" and Tab Settings will show all the settings, except for some minor map parameters like the type of Coast when such is available for a map.

What do we want to tech after Liberalism?

We are teching slowly still, but with Rep specialists we are actually generating a modest number of beakers. And our cash flow is good enough to run a turn of 100% science every few turns.

If we can get Compass and Optics, and use Lib on Astro, what do we tech after that? I agree with Sun Tzu Wu that better military tech of some sort would be useful -- maybe push up the Printing Press line with intent for Rifling? Or go for SciMeth with intent to grab Communism for State Property and the free G.Spy? If we can get Guilds in trade, then Banking and Economics are always useful to improve the economy and get a Great Merchant.

I will be going offline for a week or so for the US Thanksgiving holiday, as I travel and visit friends and family. I will not have access to a Civ computer, or likely even much internet access. So good luck with the next couple turnsets and I will be back posting in a week or so.

Hi all.

I'm going to be lurking for a while, and maybe post short comments.
My dad suffered a very large and very serious brain haemorrhage sunday at midday. And I've been at the hospital since then.
The bleeding was stopped yesterday evening, and today shoved some tiny signs of recovery. It's still a very long way to go, and I'm going to stay with my mom at the hospital for at least some days, and probably untill he is stable. So I have no idea when I'll get into any kind of serious gaming again.

McArine

McArine,

I sincerely hope your father gets better.

We can skip you in the rotation, until you tell us otherwise.

Sun Tzu Wu

Sorry to hear about your Dad McArine and my thoughts are with you and hoping for a speedy recovery.

I hope everything improves concerning your father, McArine.

Are we sure that there is a Great Spy available from Communism? If I remember correctly, Mao adopted State Property on Turn 1, meaning he started with Communism, so this may mean no GSpy is available.

All being well, I hope to be back to the UK and back to my Civ computer by Saturday.

Happy Thanksgiving to all those in the USA!!

Did wonder about the GSpy myself but we should to my mind we should go for Communism after Lib. Regardless of what tech we take.

I would then be aiming for Industrialism as a beeline. We do need to find out if we have aluminium. Certainly don't want to be building Apollo without it (and lots of other parts).

Then superconductors for Labs and all the filler techs between.

Military although we need to build some defenders if we aren't going to attack anybody not such high priority. The only person likely to attack us atm is Churchill so thats something to keep an eye on.

If we adopt State Property when we get there (thats why I'm not against part bulbing pp and Sci Meth as our tech rate is pretty slow and will be for a while) banking/economics not so essential now but needed very shortly for corporation/al/indus

Health and happiness aren't such a big problem atm whilst our cities are small (hence the granaries). We still have dye to improve (fur shortly) and I will get Ghandi's crabs this turn as well. :)

So if we are agreed I'll get Theo/Compass/gold from Roo for Gunpowder. Slowly tech towrds Lib (banking cash) and see if Optics becomes available.

Will micro all cities to get builds done asap though capital will be on HS if not BIDL and our 6th uni will take some time.

I think we should be aiming for Superconductors before Industrialism but that discussion can wait...

I also wouldn't be against bulbing Printing Press, could be good trade bait as well.

I was thinking that as well for our unique building but well off though something we should look at very shortly.

I'd be happy to bulb as well but think this one should be settled in capital. We do need the Nat Epic asap in Sugar/Pig and get some GPs out. I would have farmed/workshopped that city rather than cottages. Especially if this will be our IW city.

Quick question about our unique building... do we get 2 free Scientists per city, or just 2 free Scientists for our empire? If 2 per city, this becomes very appealing indeed......

Yep 2 per city where we build the Research Institutes. Could come sooner in the tech tree though.

Save uploaded and turn log added.

Made some notes but as expected a builder turnset just checking all cities each turn. Possibility of tech and resource trades.

Turn 0

Trade Gunpowder - Roo for Compass/Theo and 430gold
Silk - Crab - Ghandi
Lib due in 2 turns.

Turn 1

Ghandi won't trade optics (monopoly) so change tech path Lib - Optics due in 3
Capital starts Hagia Sophia
Cancel rice - churchill for 5 gpt and get 8gpt instead. Always a risk doing this as sometimes the AI don't have the spare gold and you can't get anything.

Turn 2

Settle Marble Town. With marble HS due in 9 turns.
Roo into Merc so less foreign trade. Need to start settling the islands.

Turn 3

Optics in 2 turns to Lib

Turn 4

Carried on building (not many finished in my turnset)

Turn 5

Lib in take Astro. I was going to stop here and recommend waiting for something else better but with our poor research rate and galleons available for transport to islands thought it best to take.

Aesthetics took one turn at 100% gold so set that as the next tech.

Turn 6

Aesthetics - drama. I was going to go for Lit but noticed both Roo and Churchill were missing drama and had some gold.
We are getting pillaged by spies as well. You'd think the AI would go for the people there at war with wouldn't you. :)

Turn 7

Another uni finished in twin gems changed to courthouse. Oxford getting nearer.

Turn 8

Optics stolen by Roo. He's now pleased with us so no problem. If he had asked I would have given it to him. :)

Drama in.

Turn 9

Sold Drama - Churchill for 210 gold
Trade Drama - Roo for Lit and 80 gold
Drama - PP
CopperTown - HE nearly finished. I can't see anywhere better and our military is still pretty bad so that will help.
Hagis Sophia finished started Observatory in capital.
Start PP as a tech but our tech rate is pretty dismal. Will improve though.

Turn 10

Founded St Petersburg (Ivory Town) on phant to the South. Also roading and clearing for the wine city in the North. Just need a settler and defender for that one. :)
Churchill founded Islam. Good to see he's using his beakers wisely. :)

Turn 11

Not much again. I didn't trade for it this turn but engineering + gold is available from Churchill for gunpowder. I suggest we take it. Still can't get guilds but hopefully Ghandi is teching that instead of DR and we can trade gp for that well.
Also sold Lit - Mao for 110 gold. Checked he is not Roo's worse enemy before hand.

Thoughts where to go from here????

Last uni before Oxford will be finished next turn so start the capital on that straight away.
Other Nat Wonders.

HE in Copper Town.
I think Nat Epic and Ironworks should go in the sugar pig city. This city should be workshopped in my mind or don't put the Nat Epic there.
Moai possibly in HE city though not a high priority to me.
Globe not important in this game.

Tech path.

We should finish PP then if we can part bulb Sci Meth/self tech - Communism and SP. This means no point in going for economics and the GM. Note the GSpy is available as well. No good for espionage really now but ok for GAge fodder.

Tech trades. If we don't go for ecomomics we can trade around Edu but avoid giving away Lib/Astro. Astro especially until we have grabbed the good island sites ourselves.

Other thoughts I built a caravel and hopefully we can get the circumnavigation bonus so thats heading East.

Stalin has 2 cities now so must have some room somewhere.

Whales need a workboat and the dye a plantation but not a hurry as we are nowhere ner our health/happy caps.

Do need some more conf missionaries out asap. Especially whilst we are in builder mode.

A defender for Ivory Town.

Paris's last fallout tile should be workshopped asap as it needs every hammer it can find. Almost worth running citizen there rather than coast for 1h 3beakers when it grows.

Sounds good

We need to scout Stalin as best as we can, to see the task ahead of us for our forthcoming war with him.

Mighty Dwaarf is up next.
