Whats a good finish date for a huge map?

That depends on a lot of things. What type of map is is it? If you are using 60% water pangaea map, play as Russia on Warlord. I would say 1600's is good target with 1700's being quite good.

Make several scouts to find all the huts you can. Research the cheapest tech available to fish for a leaders, this is a small chance, but better than nothing. Spam out settlers as fast as you can.

Use a unit builds from some places to disband to speed up builds elsewhere. In the AA you want to get all the optional techs from huts before you come out of the age, you will need them to ensure you can trade for the other science nations free tech.

When you get the last tech and get the notice, break in and gift the lames into the next age and trade for their free tech. So you want to have the 8 other nations in the game that have science trait.

In the Hall of Fame, Warlord difficulty, Huge map size and Spaceship victory, the best finish was by Bartleby, playing as Russia in (great ready) AD 1450.

In 5th place is Head Serf, using Carthage, lauching in AD 1973.

Quite a range.

There are five open spots in that table. If your game meets the requirements, it could be submitted to the HOF.

Just upgraded to V1.22 and now my save no longer loads. Gives multiple IO errors (date, CNGL (?) etc...). It does state older saves will work with the patch in the notes. However this doesnt seem to be the case.

Well I think that wraps it up for my (brief) return to Civ III....

[EDIT] - Quote from the download page - "NOTE: v1.22 GAMES CAN NOT BE LOADED ON EARLIER VERSIONS. EARLIER SAVES CAN STILL BE LOADED IN v1.22. Check out the readme file for full details on all fixes."

Quote from the readme that comes with the patch - "CIVILIZATION III: CONQUESTS V1.20+ DOES NOT SUPPORT SAVE GAMES FROM PRE-V1.20 VERSIONS."

I think you may need to edit the notes on your download page.

Best practice is to finish all current games before upgrading. The read me was wrong, v1.22 removes Radio from the tech tree and makes old games unworkable. You could reinstall the old version, finish your game, then upgrade. Don't abandon the game because of a technical glitch.

I have started a new game with v1.22 - a very short one I hope.

Normally I always finish a game before installing a patch but as I said, the space race movie prevented me finishing because it crashed me to desktop every time I tried to run it. I'm was hoping v1.22 fixed the bug with the movie so I could finish the game...alas.

Sorry, I had spent all weekend on that previous game and was greatly annoyed when I posted that. I still am, though I'll try again.

hi,
related to the above but a bit more general-
what patches would you suggest i should add on??
i have civ 3 conquests...
i love civ 3 but the slowness drives me crackers.

1973??!!

Is it really that hard?

No, I don't think it is that hard.

I think it has just been ignored.

Remember, the Hall of Fame tracks the 10 best games for each Difficulty/Map Size/Victory Condition. And one person can have only two entries on any one table.

For Warlord, Huge and Spaceship, only 5 game have been submitted.

Even Chieftian, Huge and Spaceship has only 4 games submitted.

I've got two games in the HOF :smug: but I submitted them to tables that had open slots, so my entry, if accepted, would make the table. My first entry (Monarch, Huge, Conquest and India :)eek:)) placed 6 fo 6, missing 5th place by a mere 1300 years.. My second entry (Monarch, Huge, Domination and Egypt) placed 3 of 5.

Which means this: if you think you can build that rocket by 1973, on Warlord, on a Huge map, do it!

:agree: The Civ 3 Hall of Fame is currently only 55.6% full. Anytime you play a game that meets the HoF rules, you can submit it :). You just need to save the turn after victory and the 4000BC save. It is not required, but it is also a good idea to submit intermediate saves if you have them - 1000 BC, 10AD, and 1000 AD.

Just wondering, why bother?

Believe it or not, some people actually find it fun to compare their scores/dates to other humans' scores/dates.

I would suspect the reason those slots are open is a Huge map and SS is time consuming and not a lot of fun. At levels like Warlord, you could easily not have a single war or one with one attack.

So what do you do, you just micromanage an ever larger empire and lots of workers. The reason the dates are much later is the cost factor on huge is 400, compare to 240 for std maps.

This means you need a lot more beakers to learn a given tech, so you need more towns, more specialist, hence more work. I think DaveMcW turned in 14 hours on a std map, going to need a lot more time on huge.

Personally I think SS is the most boring way to win, with culture a close second. At least culture can be hard to accomplish on a very high level.

To score a top score takes a lot of attention to detail and a fair amount of luck. If you do not get the right free techs, you are not going to get it done in record time. If you do not get the early settler, it will be very tough. If the other civs do not get the techs you need them to at each age AND you need to be able to trade for them. You just end up with a very nice game, not HoF.

One of the reasons I started playing Civ was that although war is a big part of the game, its entirely possible to win by other peaceful means. In fact there are more ways of winning without a war than with one :D

I like building, diplomacy and trading and consider a good game to have avoided any wars from 4000BC to the endgame (barring the odd barbarian skirmish). I hate games with protracted warfare.

I also like the biggest maps - probably for the same reason since the bigger the map the more likely you are to avoid a war.

I remember one game I was well behind everyone in techs - on my own little island with little resources and I won by Space Race (barely) by using trading and espionage alone. Nobody landed on my island the entire game since they were all trying to kill each other off and I was smallfry...

Has anyone got a vanilla v1.22 space race conquests save I can use to test if the patch sorted the video out? If I know its still broken I'll know not to bother with Space Race attempts then. Thanks in advance.

What about Diplomatic?

It requires you to play to the modern age, then either make friends or eliminate those whom are not. It is hard to stay friendly with nations, once you are bigger than they are, unless it is a lower level where you can bribe them all the time with techs.

Mainly modern age is too late unless a variant like conquest for my taste.

You can also achieve a Wonder victory, and a couple of different culture victories, along with the Diplomatic one. Builder types are not viewed very favorably on the forum, though. That type of win is viewed as being extremely boring.
