GAME OF THE MONTH #2
Start: March 1st, 2001
End: March 31st, 2001

Game Info:

- Large random map
- King level
- 7 Civilizations
- Raging horde barbarians
- Accelerated Startup (I played the first few turns for you)

The game is saved to a saved game (GOTM02.sav). I used Civ2 Classic to create the saved game so everyone should be able to play it.

At the end of the contest, all participants will have their saved games and names posted in the Game of the Month section.

--------------------------------------------
Accelerated Startup: Start Year = 1850 BC

Briefing:

Your empire is the most powerful empire in the world at this time, far ahead of other civilizations in all areas. You have a total of 6 cities, 2 of them are building Wonders of the World! While all other Civs are still despots, your enlightened wisemen had discovered the secret of Monarchy and you are the KING of this powerful kingdom.

You have recently discovered the English and have signed a peace treaty with them (after they shared their currency knowledge with you). Two of their cities are within sight, including a newly founded city, Nottingham.

One of your horseman unit is near Nottingham. Shall you betray the English and use your horsemen to destroy that city, or shall you keep the peace treaty? Another option is to move your horsemen back to your undefended city of Tabritz, build a trireme, and find new lands; you can not afford to stay on this island forever. Your wisemen had discovered Map Making not long ago.

Which route should you take?
--------------------------------------------

PS: I will upload GOTM#2 on 2/28/01. It's going to be an easier game... If you think this game is too easy, let me know...

EDIT: GOTM#2 uploaded. Have fun playing!!!

I'm certainly looking forward to this one Thunderfall!

The Seer speaks :
--- "I predict some VERY BIG scores for GotM #2" ---

Guð sceal in eorle
Warfare is proper for a nobleman
- Maxims I 83

Personally, I don't like accelerated startups, but ofcourse I'll play as well. (And I'll look to everyones results after I've finished)

And, yes, King level on a large map: big scores alright!

I also don't like accelerated start ups, but will again play

hehe... I have never played any accelerated startup games myself. But we want to make the GOTM games have very different settings each month... just to try out different things. (don't worry, I will not choose simplified combats )

The funny thing is: it doesn't matter how bad or how good you start, 'cause everybody starts that way (this stands apart from the acc. startup). I mean, whatever the beginning is, you'll play it anyway and have fun playing it, because you know your score matters. So a bit dominance (like: "This is the game and you'll have to deal with it!") isn't bad at all.

I know that it equal for everybody, but I really hate the accelerated start-up!!!
But the good thing about the game is that we are playing an a LARGE map, and King should make it easier for most of us.

I just have one question, you say that the horseman could go back to the undefended city of Tabritz!!!!! Are you telling us that we are going to play the MONGOLS????????????????????
Damn damn damn - they are almost as bad as the Zulu's!!!!! Please Thunderfall promise me that you won't make a GotM where we play the Zulu's!!!!

Zooloos.. hehehe

Myself, I dont like playing the Aztechs. I can never remember the city names I mean ..Tenochtitlan..what is that about ?

I passed up the first GOTM because I'm only playing Prince currently and didn't want to make the jump all the way to Emperor, so I am REALLY looking forward to the chance at this new one. And having very limited playing time, I appreciate the accelerated startup. Probably still won't finish in a month, but I'll have fun playing anyway. Don't know when I'll get my Prince game finished now

Just a note, this isn't accelerated start like we're used to thinking of the computer playing the first few turns for us, but an actual human, so we know it was played well. I kind of like the idea of setting up a major decision we all have to deal with to start. It will be interesting to see what everybody does with it.

First of all, I (we?) don't like an accelerated startup, because I like to make my own civilization from scratch. But nevertheless, you're right that this is much more interesting, because of the immediate decision we have to make. And this is more fun for people like you who haven't got that much experience or simply aren't so good ( for shame, Matrix!). Anyway, because a game like this is more than just an average game, I'm sure that you can find time for this and play better as usual/be more concentrated.

As my current GOTM will prove, I am in the "aren't so good" category .

While I would prefer starting from scratch most of the time so I can screw it up all by myself, one thing you might consider is an accelerated startup where you put our civ at a distinct DISadvantage instead of ahead. Maybe you have an exploration unit, a warrior defending your first city, but you build a couple settlers and disband them to set the civ way behind after the first milennium or so. THEN save the game when you find the nearest civ.

The need to react to an immediate threat when you don't have a strong base could be more interesting than how to pad a lead.

BTW: Leowind: Probably a wise move sitting out the Feb game. It is my first foray at Emperor after 1 1/2 successful games at King and I think I'm about to be taught a lesson in humility. The starting terrain was lousy and for someone like me still learning the ropes it certainly did not help ('tis a poor carpenter who blames his tools!). My biggest problem was my own indecision. Live and learn. However, it is an interesting challenge and I still hold out some hope. Try it some day!

Oh the agony of time-zones!!!!

It's been Feb.28 for nearly 12 hours now, and no news on GOTM 1, and no GOTM 2...
