Purpose: This thread is intended to help users who are unsure how to go about installing Fall from Heaven 2, or who have attempted to install Fall from Heaven 2 but failed.

-------------
Using this thread: This thread is divided into sections, based on different tasks that may be required to successfully install Fall from Heaven 2. The sections are presented in the order in which they should be completed - however, you may not need to follow the instructions in all of the sections.

• If you have tried installing FfH2, but your attempt was not successful, begin with the section Recovering from a failed installation attempt.

• If you need to install the Mod for the first time, begin with the section Preparing to install Fall from Heaven 2.

• If you have installed FfH2, and it is working correctly, but you need to install a new patch, then proceed to the section Fall from Heaven 2 Patch installation walkthrough.

• If you have a working installation of FfH2 but have not yet installed the Media Pack, and you would like to try it out, you need only follow the instructions in the section Fall from Heaven 2 Media Pack installation walkthrough.

-------------
Vital Concepts: The instructions given in this thread assume your understanding of these concepts. Your successful use of this thread depends upon that understanding.

. [path] In the sections below I refer several times to "[path]", for example "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods". "[path]" is used to represent the path to your install of Civ4, which will be different depending upon which version of Civ you have and whether you accepted the default install path. For example, on my system I have installed Civ4 to "F:\Civ IV" and so in my screenshots you will see that for me "[path]" is "F:\Civ IV" and "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods" is "F:\Civ IV\Beyond the Sword\Mods". It is important that you know the correct path to your installation of Civ4, and that you replace "[path]" with that path while following this guide.

This section offers suggestions to help avoid interference from a failed previous installation of Fall from Heaven 2 with the success of your next attempt.

If you have never had an attempt to install FfH2 fail then you can skip this section; proceed to the section Preparing to install Fall from Heaven 2, below.
Spoiler Click the "Show" button to reveal the instructions :
1) If you still have them, you should delete the install files you used in your failed attempt to install the Mod. They may be the cause of the failure. It is best to redownload those files after you have completed the rest of the steps in this section.

2) The failed install attempt may have created a "Fall from Heaven 2" folder, in your "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods" folder, which now contains a partial or damaged version of the Mod. It is best to delete this folder now, to ensure that the contents of this folder do not interfere with future install attempts. Use Windows to navigate to the "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods" folder and look for a "Fall from Heaven 2" folder. If one is present, right-click on it and choose "Delete" from the context menu that opens. Then locate your "Recycle Bin", right-click on it and choose "Empty Recycle Bin" from the context menu.

3) In order for FfH2 to work correctly, Civ4 needs to be installed correctly and functional. Test this by launching Civ4 and creating a new game. If Civ4 is unable to start or crashes while loading or while creating the new game then it is not working properly. You will need to correct that problem before you can successfully install and play FfH2. If you need assistance with that, you can consult the Firaxis support site or the Civ Fanatics Civ4 Technical Support Forum.

4) Successful installation of FfH2 will require a certain amount of free hard drive space. Once installed, the Mod will take up about 671 MB (patched), or 846 MB with the Media Pack installed. Additionally, the Mod installer and Patcher will take up about 375 MB of space. If you also download the Media Pack that total will increase to 554 MB. These sizes are for 0.41j; subsequent patches may increase the size of the Mod. Windows and the install system will also require a certain amount of space during the installation process; I'm not sure exactly how much space that will be. You can minimize the space needed by ensuring that you are running no other applications while you run the installers.

I suggest that you have at least 1.6 GB of free space if you plan to install the Mod and Patch, plus an additional 400 MB (for a total of 2 GB of free space) if you plan to also install the Media Pack. If you do not have this much space available then you should attempt to free up some space. You can do this by deleting unnecessary files, uninstalling unused programs, and compressing seldom-accessed files. The specific details of how to choose what to delete, uninstall or compress are beyond the scope of this guide.

It is possible to install the Mod with less space free if you download and install the Mod, Media Pack, and Patch one at a time, deleting each installer after successful installation before downloading the next. I do not recommend this method except as a last resort, however, because if a problem occurs that requires you to reinstall then you will have to download all of the files again. Once you have successfully installed the Mod and confirmed that it is working, you can, if you wish, delete the installer files you downloaded to free up that space. However, be aware that if you do so then you will need to redownload those files should you need to reinstall the Mod.

5) I recommend defragmenting your hard drive before you reattempt to install the Mod. A fragmented hard drive should not be responsible for installation failure, but defragmenting a hard drive can sometimes reveal a hardware problem with the drive which could be responsible. Also, defragmenting is a good maintenance practice that will pay off in a number of ways. If you attempt to defragment the drive and it fails then the drive may be bad. The specific details of how to defragment a hard drive and of diagnosing and repairing hardware failure are beyond the scope of this guide.

Ω) Successfully completing these steps should ensure that your failed previous installation attempt(s) will not interfere with your next installation attempt. Proceed to the next section, Preparing to install Fall from Heaven 2.

This section will guide you through the steps you should take before you install the Mod.

If you have previously attempted to install the mod, but the attempt(s) failed, then you should begin with the section Recovering from a failed installation attempt, located above.
Spoiler Click the "Show" button to reveal the instructions :
1) Fall from Heaven 2 requires Civilization 4 + Beyond the Sword + BtS patch v3.19 to play 1. You can download the BtS patch from the Firaxis web site here: Sid Meier's Civilization IV: Beyond The Sword Patches

This thread assumes that these requirements have all been installed correctly and are working. If you are having a problem with Civ4, you should attempt to resolve that problem before installing FfH2 (or any other Mod). If you need assistance with that, you can consult the Firaxis support site or the Civ Fanatics Civ4 Technical Support Forum.

2) Before you can install the Mod you will need to download it. You should also download the latest Mod patch, and the optional Media Pack (if you plan to install it). The Media Pack includes a variety of movies for FfH2, and is not necessary to play the Mod.

Links to download these three files are found in the first post of the FfH2 Bug Thread, in the section labeled "Downloads:" which is near the start of the post.

I recommend downloading all three files to a folder you create to store them. For example:
Spoiler The FfH2 install files (XP) :
If you plan to keep the install files (which I recommend, to save yourself the hassle of having to redownload them if you need to reinstall the Mod) then the folder in which you store them should not be located in your Civ 4 path.

If your folder is not displaying the size of the files you've downloaded then you can select to view the details of the files. Right-click in the window, but not directly on any specific file, click "View" from the context menu that opens, and then select the "Details" option.
Spoiler Choose to view details (XP) :
This will allow you to see the file sizes. You may need to redownload the Mod installer or Media Pack installer if the file size is incorrect. Make sure you are downloading the files from a trusted source and that the download is completing successfully.

3) The files that you download should all end in ".exe", to indicate that they are executable by Windows. You may not see ".exe" at the end of the files you download, and this may or may not be a problem. The extension could be absent, or Windows might be hiding it. To ensure that the extension is there, follow these steps to confirm that Windows is displaying extensions:

--> A: Click on "start", then click on "My Computer". Click on "Tools" at the top of the window that opens, and choose "Folder Options" from the menu that opens.
Spoiler Locating "Folder Options" (XP) :
--> B: The "Folder Options" window will open. Click on the "View" tab and scroll through the list of options until you see the checkbox for "Hide extensions for known file types":
Spoiler How to show file extensions (XP) :
--> C: If the checkbox is empty then no change is necessary; click "Cancel" to close the window without changes.

If the checkbox contains a checkmark, click it to remove the checkmark and then click "OK" to apply the change and close the window.

--> D: File extensions should now be displayed, so if you still do not see the ".exe" at the end of the FfH2 installer files then there is a problem. The extension will need to be added to those files in order to be able to execute them. To add the extension to a file, right-click on the file and choose "Rename" from the context menu that opens. Move the cursor to the end of the current filename, type ".exe" (without the quotes), and then press enter. The file should now have the correct name and extension. Repeat the process for each of the files that does not end in ".exe".

--> E: Once you have verified that all of the install files have the correct extension you may, if you wish, return to "Folder Options" and reactivate the "Hide extensions for known file types" option.

Ω) Once you have successfully completed all these steps you are ready to install Fall from Heaven 2. Proceed to the section Fall from Heaven 2 Mod installation walkthrough.

Notes:
Spoiler #1: Mod Requirements :
Civilization 4 Complete includes Civ4 & the Beyond the Sword expansion as a single package.

If you are not sure whether you have installed the BtS v3.19 patch you can check from the game's main menu. Click on "ADVANCED", then "ABOUT THIS BUILD". The details window that opens should say "Civ Version: 319". If not, then you are using the wrong version and should download and run the BtS v3.19 patch.

Some versions of Civ4 (the Steam version, for example) are designed to automatically download the latest patch. If you have a version of Civ that does this, then you should always have the latest patch installed. If another patch for Civ4 is released you will need to wait for FfH2 to be updated to work with that patch before you can play the Mod.

This section will guide you through the installation of the Fall from Heaven 2 Mod.

Before installing the Mod you should have completed the steps in the section Preparing to install Fall from Heaven 2, located above.
Spoiler Click the "Show" button to reveal the instructions :
1) Locate the Mod installer (FallfromHeaven2041d.exe) and double-click on it to start the installation process.

2) Most users will see a security warning from Windows, asking you to confirm that you want to execute the file. Click "Run" to proceed.
Spoiler Security Warning :
3) The installer will self-verify 1, and then the splash image will fade in and out.

4) Next you will see a message warning you that FfH2 requires Beyond the Sword patched to version 3.19. Click "OK" to continue installation. If you have not yet installed the BtS v3.19 patch you can do so after the Mod has finished installing.
Spoiler Patch Warning (XP) :
Spoiler Patch Warning (Vista) :
5) If you already have a "Fall from Heaven 2" folder in your "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods" folder then the installer will ask you whether you want to rename it. The safest response to this question is "Yes", which you should choose if you are at all unsure. If you are new to FfH2, or if you have manually deleted your old "Fall from Heaven 2" folder prior to installation then you will not see this dialog.
Spoiler Rename folder dialog :
6) Now the installer will ask you to tell it where to install the mod. By default, the correct location should be automatically provided - which should be "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods". If you change the location to "[path]\Beyond the Sword" or "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Fall from Heaven 2" then the Mod will not work correctly. Only change the install location to something other than the suggested location if you are absolutely certain that your change is necessary and correct. Click "Install" to begin the extraction process.
Spoiler Choose Install Location (XP) :
Spoiler Choose Install Location (Vista) :
7) You will see the progress of the installation process in the installation window. There is nothing to do; just wait the the process to complete.
Spoiler Installing (XP) :
Spoiler Installing (Vista) :
8) Once the installation has completed, click "Close" to exit the installer.
Spoiler Installation Complete (XP) :
Spoiler Installation Complete (Vista) :
Ω) Fall from Heaven 2 installation is now complete. The installer has created a shortcut icon on your desktop that will lauch Civ4 and load directly into FfH2. However, before you begin playing you may want to install the Media Pack (see the section Fall from Heaven 2 Media Pack installation walkthrough), and it is strongly recommended that you install the latest FfH2 patch (see the section Fall from Heaven 2 Patch installation walkthrough).

Notes:
Spoiler #1: NSIS Error :
If the installer fails its integrity check you will see a message like this:
Code:
Installer integrity check has failed. Common causes include
incomplete download and damaged media. Contact the
installer's author to obtain a new copy.

If you encounter this problem, installation will not be able to continue. The NSIS web site (linked above) contains a list of suggested resolutions you can attempt.

This section will guide you though the installation of the optional Fall from Heaven 2 Media Pack.

The Media Pack requires a working installation of Fall from Heaven 2 in order to function correctly.

Skip this section if you elect not to use the Media Pack.
Spoiler Click the "Show" button to reveal the instructions :
1) If you have not yet downloaded the Media Pack, do so. The link to download this file is found in the first post of the FfH2 Bug Thread, in the section labeled "Downloads:" which is near the start of the post.

2) Locate the Media Pack installer (FfH2media.exe) and double-click on it to start the installation process.

3) Most users will see a security warning from Windows, asking you to confirm that you want to execute the file. Click "Run" to proceed.
Spoiler Security Warning :
4) The installer will self-verify 1, and then the splash image will fade in and out.

Spoiler #2: "No Movies" Option :
To check whether you have movies enabled: Launch the Mod and at the main menu choose "ADVANCED", then choose "OPTIONS", then click on the "Graphics" tab. The checkbox is in the lower-right, and in order to see movies the checkbox must be empty.

This section will guide you through the process of applying a patch for the Fall from Heaven 2 Mod. You will need to have a working installation of Fall from Heaven 2 before you can successfully apply a patch.

Note that it is not necessary to install every patch individually when installing FfH2 for the first time. Each patch includes all the changes made in the previous patches, so it is only necessary to install the latest patch.

In most cases you will then want to repeat these steps with each new patch as it is released, so that you will always be using the latest version of the Mod.
Spoiler Click the "Show" button to reveal the instructions :
1) If you have not yet downloaded the Patch you are going to install, do so. The link to download the latest Patch is found in the first post of the FfH2 Bug Thread, in the section labeled "Downloads:" which is near the start of the post. Under most circumstances you will want to install the latest Patch. If you are unsure which Patch you should install, install the latest Patch.

2) Locate the Patch installer (FfH2041_.exe -> where "_" is replaced by the letter designation of the patch) and double-click on it to start the installation process.

3) Most users will see a security warning from Windows, asking you to confirm that you want to execute the file. Click "Run" to proceed.
Spoiler Security Warning :
4) The installer will self-verify 1, and then the splash image will fade in and out.

5) If the Patcher is unable to locate FfH2 you will see this message. Click "OK" to continue the patch installation process. Most users who have installed the Mod correctly 2 will not see this message. If you have not yet installed the Mod, exit the Patcher by clicking "Cancel" on the next window and follow the steps in the section Fall from Heaven 2 Mod installation walkthrough to do so.
Spoiler Patcher cannot find the Mod :
6) Now the installer will ask you to confirm the location of the Mod. By default, the correct location should be automatically provided - which should be "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods". If you change the location to "[path]\Beyond the Sword" or "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Fall from Heaven 2" then the Patch will not install correctly. Notes:
Spoiler #1: NSIS Error :
If the installer fails its integrity check you will see a message like this:

If you encounter this problem, installation will not be able to continue. The NSIS web site (linked above) contains a list of suggested resolutions you can attempt.
Spoiler #2: Patcher cannot find the Mod :
Some users have reported that the Patcher gives this error message even though the Mod is installed correctly. This has been reported in connection with Civilization 4 Complete, but not all Complete users experience this problem. It is unclear whether this has happened to users of any other versions.

If you have installed the Mod, and are able to load it and play games, then you can continue patch installation normally even if you see this error message. The patch should install correctly, as long as you provide the correct installation location.

This section contains depreciated installation information. Nothing here is part of the normal installation process. This information is retained here for archival purposes, in case the information should become relevant again at some future time. Users attempting to install Fall from Heaven 2 should not use this information unless referred to a specific subsection of this post by a reliable source.
Spoiler Depreciated information archive :
Manual Installation of the Patch:
Manual installation of the patch should no longer be necessary, because the Patcher can now continue even if it cannot locate Fall from Heaven 2.
Spoiler Manual Installation of the Patch :
This section will guide you through the process of manually extracting the patch files from the Patcher. This should only be attempted when patching a known-working install of Fall from Heaven 2 using the Patcher has failed. If you have not yet done so, try installing the patch normally by following the steps in the section Fall from Heaven 2 Patch installation walkthrough, above.

This procedure is provided on a "use at your own risk" basis. If any complications occur or problems arise that are not directly addressed herein, it will be up to you to attempt to recover from whatever damage has occurred as a result. If you are uncomfortable with this fact, do not use this procedure.

1) First, you should confirm that your install of Fall from Heaven 2 is working correctly. Load the Mod and launch a new game.

If you are unable to load FfH2, or if you are unable to launch a new game, or if the game crashes before you are able to take control of your units, or if the game starts and you are playing normal Civ4:BtS instead of FfH2, then the Mod is not installed correctly. If that is the case, this section will not help you. You should reinstall the Mod, starting with the section Recovering from a failed installation attempt above.

2) To manually extract the files from the Patcher you will need to use a utility, such as 7-Zip. I will use 7-Zip in my examples, so if you have another utility then the process will probably be similar but the details may not be exact.

3) Load 7-Zip and locate the Patch installer (FfH2041_.exe -> where "_" is replaced by the letter designation of the patch). Single-click the Patcher file to select it.
Spoiler Locate the FfH2 patch using 7-Zip :
4) Click on the "File" menu, click on "7-Zip" to open the sub-menu, then choose "Open archive".
Spoiler Locating "Open archive" :
5) 7-Zip will open the Patcher. We are interested in the section labeled "$[31]".
Spoiler Inside the patcher :
6) Double-click the "$[31]" to open; you will see a "Fall from Heaven 2" folder. Click the "Extract" button.
Spoiler Extract the "Fall from Heaven 2" folder :
7) A dialog will open requesting the destination for the extraction. It is critical that you supply the correct location. Normally, you will want to extract the files to "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods". 7-Zip will not automatically suggest this location. Your install of FfH2 will not be patched correctly if you extract the files to "[path]\Beyond the Sword" or "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Fall from Heaven 2", or anywhere else that is not the correct location of the Mod. Once you have entered the correct extraction location, click "OK".
Spoiler Specify the location for the extraction :
8) 7-Zip will immediately encounter an already-existent version of one of the files it is trying to extract, and will ask you to confirm the replacement of that file. I recommend you respond with the "Yes to All" option; there are many files to replace and confirming each one individually will be tedious. You must allow all of the files to be replaced or the patch will not be installed correctly.

If you do not see a "Confirm File Replace" dialog then either you are extracting the files to the wrong location or the Mod is not installed.
Spoiler The "Confirm File Replace" dialog :
9) 7-Zip will provide you with a progress indicator while it is extracting files. If you selected the "Yes to All" response to the "Confirm File Replace" dialog then it will not need any additional input from you to finish the process. When the extraction is complete the "Copying" window will close automatically and there will be no confirmation or notification of completion.
Spoiler Copying :
Ω) Your install of Fall from Heaven 2 should now be patched correctly. In order to verify this you will need to check in-game that changes listed in the patch notes have in fact taken place. Naturally, if you are unable to load the Mod after completing this process then the extraction was not performed correctly.

Please keep your posts in this thread on-topic, for the sake of people looking for solutions. Thank you.

To Do:
• Expand guide to include Vista.
• Reproofread thread for errors.
• Add information about ways to launch the Mod.
• Add information about troubleshooting and customizing the FfH2 shortcut.

This thread is of great help for FFH installations. Could it be stickied so that its always available? Thanks :goodjob:

Nice thread... a little long winded... but appreciated.

Here's a question though...

I downloaded the Blue Marble for FfH file too.
How is that installed.

I mean, I know you just run it and all like the rest... but WHEN is it installed?
After installing the main mod?
After the media pack?
After the patch?

Any time after installing the main mod should be fine. The media pack and patches don't make changes to terrain graphics, so they and Blue Marble should not interact in any way.

Hi, I lost this mod when trying to patch to 3.19 (I uninstalled it to try to make it work) and am unable to patch to 3.19, but that's not what I'm asking for here.

Is there a 3.17 version of FFH2 available for download anywhere, or will the 3.19 version work on 3.17 BTS?

FfH2 0.40 works with BtS v3.17, as does unpatched FfH2 0.41. I don't believe that either of those is still being officially distributed however. The earliest official download is for FfH2 0.41d, which requires BtS v3.19 (and so will not work with BtS v3.17). You could try to find a download for 0.40 or 0.41 using a search engine, but my suggestion would be to get BtS patched up to v3.19. There have been a lot of improvements made in the more recent versions, and all new patches will require BtS v3.19.

Hi

I've downloaded twice FFH 2, tried to install it three times; it seemed to work well, but for now on, all I happened to get, (with Bts 3.19) is a crash each time I attempt to launch FFH mod.

I've carefully read Emptiness's posts, chosed the correct path for folder (though it was not the right on automatically chosen during installation process), but yet, it won't work.

It's a bit odd, but installation files are slightly bigger than what is displayed before the download; yet, the two installation files have exactly the same size, so I figure out that both have been fully downloaded...

Some help would be much appreciated.

Hasefrexx, can you tell me the exact names, dates, and file sizes (as reported by windows) of the two installation file you are talking about?

Are you able to launch and play BtS without a crash?

Of course.

The files are 2009_05_16_FallfromHeaven2041d (and 2009_05_16_FallfromHeaven2041d(2) for the 2nd download...), downloaded wednesday the 10th of march 2010, 12:26:21 pm ^^

Hum, for file size, displayed on the window, there is 376 971 Kbytes. Though, in propoerties there are two others size; I'm not sure how to translate how Windows call this... I guess it should be "size": 386 017 340 bytes and "size on the drive": 386 019 328 bytes when I'm looking in properties with right click.
It's the same for the install (2)
Pick the one you like, to me it's all the same :p

Those in properties are the same as what the download showed in the end...

Yeah, BtS is working fine, appart some crash from time to time on biggest maps on late game with too much vassals or almost all the map displaied due to spying :)

I've just gotten patch m, but nothing's changed.

The size displayed by Windows in the details view of the folder is rounded. The "Size on disk" line from file properties can vary from one location to another, based on the type of file system. Those two sizes are less useful when making a comparison. For the file size, we are interested in the "Size" line from the file properties. This size should always be reported as the same. 386,017,340 is the expected size for FallfromHeaven2041d.exe, so that is not a problem.

To check the version installed, open the FfH2 readme file: "[path]\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Fall from Heaven 2\Readme 041.rtf" (where [path] is the path to your installation of Civ 4). The second line of text should say the version ("Version 0.41m", for example).

To check the version of Civ 4 installed, load the game (not FfH2, just BtS) and at the main menu click "ADVANCED", then "ABOUT THIS BUILD". The line "Civ Version" will tell you the version installed, and should say "319" for v3.19. If it does not say this then the v3.19 patch hasn't been installed, or did not install correctly. It will need to say "319" in order to play FfH2, and if it does not then crashes will be the result.

If that checks out, try launching FfH2 from BtS. From the main menu click "ADVANCED", then "LOAD A MOD". Fall from Heaven 2 should be one of the mods listed, and if it is not then it has not been installed to the correct location. Select Fall from Heaven 2 from the list and click "OK". If the mod loads correctly then the problem is not the mod itself but rather the shortcut normally used to lauch it. If loading the mod in this way also crashes then let me know.

I was convinced that I had the 3.19 version...

Here is for me:

Thanks for help (explanation and very detailed topic btw); the Civs overview from the manual is very promisful; it's time to crush some neighboring civs

I need to know if this method is different on Windows 7. I've tried everything this site had to offer on how to get FFH2 to work, and I've got everything especially on this tutorial, but when I try to play FFH2 after it's installed, nothing happens. It just doesn't start at all. No crash or error message.

Also, when I tried installing the patch, it claimed it could not locate FFH2, but this may be because I'm using the newest version of FFH2.
