Hi everyone and welcome to the TSG35 After Action Report thread. In this thread you can post the results of your game. Please state victory date and score (preferably in the post title), as recorded in the Hall of Fame, and the most important: your path to glory!

STOP - Please do not continue reading this thread until you have completed and submitted your game.

Please use the Civ5 game submission page to submit your final, first play through, .Civ5Save file, saved AFTER the victory ceremony if you were not conquered (using the "Lemme play one more turn" feature.).

Players are encouraged to provide feedback on the game. Some players like to replay the game, and although we will not record the results from a replay, you can still post your new experiences (please state if the game is a replay).

Would be interested to hear any thoughts on game setup. :)

I wanted sub 150 but i didn't want to screw the whole thing just for a little better time.

from the TSG35 Game in progress Thread:
Turn 186 now - razed japan, china, america - currently working on suleiman - but he has Janissary already - anyway.. build GL but lost 8 turns because i researched calendar instead of trapping - so i took a risk and delayed it until trapping to get the correct tech to chiv.Didn't explore further than china, japan, suleiman - so i have no idea what the map looks like - the other civ's found me with caravels though - so i will presume it's a continents map.Terrain is inexplicably though - hills and rivers don't help the horses travel faster and this annoys me terribly. And there's the fact that i need to use the water because of that choke point. Also, because i didn't scout as i should have i have had no Ra's yet - at least i finished astro...

I think i will not win this one...but it's not a big deal - i don't play OCC... so i don't have any....ambitions... with this one.

And now i can say for certain that i won't win it - 2 Civ's left, Monty and Caesar, both with artillery and infantry. I'm just researching cavalry. And i also have just 2 units on the other continent.

After 15 GOTMs or so that I have submitted time to get off my lazy a*s and actually write something

I'm always playing safe that's why I constantly end up in the middle of the table and, predictably, that's what I did this time. For me Tradition was the obvious choice. I wanted to grow my city large since I only get one, and for this reason I also went after the HG, right after I built the GL (I actually used the free tech to get Mathematics). That way I got lots of population (ended up with 23) and lots of production, which didn't amount to much since most of the time I kept suffering a 50% production penalty for overproducing units (at some point I had 15+ cavs and a few longswords).

I did not attack anyone until turn 110 when I discovered Chivalry although I did have a reasonably large army who just sat around watching my only worker farm the hills (because 47 food I already had was not enough ) It took me about sixty turns to clear my continent, starting from Suleiman and working my way westwards. I could have done this damage with only half the army I got available. A better way would have been to research Astro much earlier and send an army to the other continent so as to work both continents simultaneously. But I didn't. I actually chose to settle both GS I produced instead of using them to bulb Astro. Lame... :(

Typical of my style of play was the end game, when I rested my crazy horde of cavs on the outskirts of Rome for about 5 turns to regain full health, while I should have charged straight away to pillage the not-so-eternal city to smitherins. Well there you go, back in the middle of the table I guess...

This was fun, I'm not that good at war-mongering so good practice and a decent time for me.

Could have got the victory much sooner but got bogged down in the awful terrain around Japan, perhaps should have split army to take on multiple enemies rather than yomping from one side of the map to the other.

Discovered that units cannot be upgraded in allied CS - for some reason I assumed you could :crazyeye:

Also should have bee-lined Chivalry properly rather than diving off for other techs, didn't use our UU until attacked civs on the other continent.

Walkthrough attached.

DOMINATION VICTORY
HOF = 964

Turns 73-126

The Ottomans, who have a large army near our new ally Sidon, declare and kill the Warrior we just got from that city state.
We know where they are though, and that is not west, where their army is, but southeast.

On turn 81 we discover Optics and adopt Professional Army, completing the Honor tree. Spearman becomes Pikeman, we upgrade our 4 promoted Warriors at home to Swordsman and drop them into the coastal waters. :mischief:

We find Edirne in the way, destroy it and converge on Istanbul, which falls on turn 101. The Ottomans gave 200g for Peace and will bother us no more, although they (and America and China) remain in the game.

Also on turn 101, Gao completes the Hagia Sophia, we discover Compass, take Education from the free Great Scientist and buy ourselves a University. :king:

Now things go fast. Four turns later, Oxford nets us Astronomy, and on turn 109 the Great Scientist that our two specialists produced give Chivalry. Two Chariot Archers and a Horseman from Sidon get upgraded to Mandekalu Cavalry right away, more Horseman units (including another one from Sidon) will follow.

We have two Great Generals exploring and they quickly find both ends of the other landmass, where we happily meet the three remaining civs and sign open borders. What do they know. ;)

The Swordsman army followed their GG to the east and attack Rome. Two waves of Mandekalu Cavalry go west and attack Karakorum and Tenochtitlan, and finally a Catapult with one last Swordsman and one final Mandekalu Cavalry, go for Kyoto. Our economy hurts from the penalty, but we don't need it anymore. :)

Build order was something like scout, scout, granary, GL, HG, Oracle... I bulbed Chivalry with the GS from GL&Oracle. I built NE hoping that it would round up 2.5 GPP to 3, but it didn't. Full tradition, full honour, rationalism opener in there somewhere. In retrospect, I should have forgotten about bulbing Chiv, and just stacked some RAs to get it. I rolled over Kyoto, Beijing, Washington and Istanbul in that order, and then tried to find everyone else. It was a bit of pain having to scout the oceans with one 1 tile visibility.

I also stopped building cavalry when I hit the unit supply limit, and in retrospect, I should just have kept spamming them until I couldn't. When I finally landed my army on the other continent, I rolled over Rome pretty easily, then joined Genghis in taking out Tenochtitlan. Then it was the clash of the horse lords - would the Keshiks beat my Mandekalus? Well, they should, but of course they didn't. I lost a lot of units capturing Karakorum, but by then I had a steady stream coming across the ocean.

I beelined HG right away and then researched Chivalry asap. With 8 Mandekalus and 4 Swordsmen I took on China and Japan, finishing them quickly. Next fell Washington which wasn't a problem either. I then planned to proceed to the Ottomans, but good old George took care of their capital for me. Didn't really help me though because I wasn't ready to cross the oceans yet. So I went for Astronomy next, using Oxford to get it.

I discovered the other continent's East Coast first, so that's where my army sailed. I decided to take out Genghis first, because he looked the bigger threat compared to Monty. Karakorum burned soon after the war started and without hesitation I marched against the Aztecs and took them out in only a few turns.

I allied with the city-state just south of Rome and landed my units (still Mandekalus and Swordsmen, btw, with some Musketmen and two Cannons mixed in) there. It almost went against me there, though. He had a lot of units, mainly ranged ones, and had built that bloody Great Wall. I thought about giving up because it looked really bad, but thanks to the dumb AI I did manage to conquer Rome with only the Cannons and one Mandekalu and two Swordsmen left.

My mistake was to reasearch Astronomy way too late. That cost me a lot of turns. In retrospect, it might also have been smarter to wait in my lands until I had Cavalry to replace the Mandekalus and more Cannons. Wouldn't have taken much longer since I had to wait for Astronomy anyway and I should've been able to steamroller the other continent much quicker.

What I find quite telling is that I have by far the shortest playing time, relative to turns played. Guess I'm just not into micro managment that much. :D

Well... it went a lot better than I had hoped, considering OCC and Immortal level. I could have one if I didn't stubbornly refuse to try for any victory other than Domination. But when there were only 3 AI capitols left (I killed only one of those... the Ottoman), and two were close by (Washington and Kyoto), I thought I had a chance. Unfortunately, I fell just a couple units shy of taking Rome... and then got wasted by zero's on an attempt at Kyoto. Ghenghis took Rome anyhow, and Washington fell, but I got nuked and couldn't get my modern armor and stealth bombers into the action soon enough after that, so I lost diplo victory to Ghenghis (my BFF). At least it wasn't to Japan, who pretty much warred with me the entire game.

Fun game... I think I do much better in OCC because I do not fall to the temptation of over-expansion. :crazyeye:

Some nice moves there Ribannah. In particular, buying a university for a super-early Oxford. Also you remembered to build the heroic epic, although not doing so was really just stupidity on my part.

Am I right in thinking you took out the first two capitals with a spearman, 3 warriors and a great general? I knew I was conservative waiting for Mandekalus, but that seems crazy.

It took a while and the end was hairy. Cav and cannons against a 63 def Monty was chancy. Luckily, tthe cs gave me 5 arty.

Next time, I will go for an early rush too instead of waiting for the horsies.

Yes, that's correct. There was no defence to speak of.
Mandekalus arrive too late to do all the work by themselves.

I didn't end up finishing the game but wanted to share my experience with Monaco.

I got rid of a barb camp for them, returned their worker, built the HG as they requested and discovered Japan for them. And still, they never became my ally.

Talk about ungrateful...

Well that's about the earliest Civ5 win I've had yet, so I guess I'm larnin sumpin' ;)

Settled in place; Hanging Gardens start.

Went for Japan first, attacked his capital straight off and got it down to 0hp but with all my melee units destroyed. At least I pillaged the heck out of him. Then America was trying to sneak an army on my border, so I rushed the siege units and general home while building more and wiped out America. Went on to punish the Ottomans but didnt reach the capital before I got in the same situation; the Janisaries were murder.

Rebuilt the army, upgraded the siegers, and this time finished Kyoto, meanwhile had some lancers find and scout the other continent. Kyoto was the only Japanese city torched, beside the one they were insolent enough to try building west of Gao.

Landed an army (infantry/artillery) in Aztec land with Monty's permission, he was getting hammered by Genghis and Caesar, and had only the capital left.

I attacked Genghis hard, but then Rome almost got into the Aztec capital, and I didnt know where Id end up if I lost my open border lands. So peaced out Genghis and turned around, also sending tanks. Finished off Rome with Tanks and Artillery and 3 generals including a CS-gifted Khan. When Rome fell, I turned around to face the Mongols, who had finished Montezuma while I was gone. Karakorum was the last cap to fall. While I was fighting through Mongolia , back home had a fleet of Modern Armors (1 turn to build) and Lancers >> Gunships quickly destroy Sully and Wu.

Allied all CS most of the game. Finished Autocracy for the first time ever, used that attack bonus vs Rome.
Never was attacked at sea.

@ Lief:
re the game setup
It was a work of art, a beauty to behold. Not too much, not too little resources. The strait/choke point gave a fighting chance, and left a nice choice of avenues to attack the home continent. I built a road SW from Gao through the hills to where it opened up south of the choke.

The AI continues to surprise me as the Romans actually helped shave about 5-10 turns off my (already too long) end game by capturing the last outstanding capitol (Mongol) and thereby giving me the domination victory.

I thought the AI would be programmed to realize that taking that capitol would result in a domination victory for another player (me in this case) but I guess not.

I had just landed my army in Mongol territory and it would have taken a few turns of fighting to get to his inland capitol, but Caesar being obsessed with conquering every city in sight really wanted it I guess.

Anyway, very fun & interesting game (and my first real OCC).

dom t181 , Base score: 377 ,Final score: 1047

waited for the Marmadukes before unleashing those dogs of war. lost some to enemy pikes at the end, but they were victorious.
Washington down t119, Beijing t131 Istanbul t133.
got PT t136 for GS Astro. (I forgot about Oxford too)
Mongolia found t142, Aztecs found T143
Kyoto down T148.
Rome found T149.
Karkaroum down T164.
Roman and Axtecs Pikes and Aztec Great Wall delayed me quite a bit, but eventually both Rome and Tenochtitlan fell on the same turn (T181)

I had built two or three cannons, but they were still a few turns away from the front lines when the game ended.

Interesting game. I never would have thought to go for a dom win with OCC.
thanks Leif!

This was my first GOTM game (after this I went back and did GOTM 34, which still had a few days left before the game closed).

I've also never played played OCC before, so that was a new experience for me.

General questions:

1. What's the best way to take a screenshot of your game? I tried Alt + Printscreen and pasted into Paint but I just ended up with a black screen.

2. Are the personality stats for the AI fixed for every game or will they vary for different players? Reading the reports of other players and saying how the AI's behaved completely differently (in regards to warring, expansion, wonder building) makes me rather intrigued about it.

3. After you win the game, do you just save it immediately and then submit it? Or are you supposed to literally click "end turn" and then save it? I was a bit confused about the "turn after you win" detail - if you do need to click "end turn" one more time before saving, why is that needed?

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

[Game Summary]

Settled SE of the start, on the hills/river next to the stone.

MISTAKE #1: Well, this was more of a "calculated risk" that didn't pay off. I wanted to try something new, so I went for a "Chariot Archer" scouting for Ruins in hopes of an early Mandekalu Cavalry that could crush my opponents early. Unfortunately it didn't pay off. I beelined the Wheel but by the time I had my first Chariot Archer, and started exploring, all the Ruins on the continent were gone (I had 4 Chariot Archers at this point). I then went for Optics hoping to find some Ruins on random islands nearby, but there were none available.

MISTAKE #2: In addition to poor luck with the map due to no ruins on nearby isles, scouting early also made me realize that 3 civs were on a different continent that required Astronomy. This also torpedoed my hopes of an early Mandekalu naval invasion on the 3 unknown civs. It also meant that I had to keep my 4 neighbors alive longer than expected so that I could RA into Astronomy. In hindsight, I kept them alive much longer than I should have which delayed the game significantly (especially since it gave Monty the time to grow too large).

Since I focused on my failed Chariot Archer rush (I didn't even bother attacking anyone once I learned I needed to shoot for Astronomy), my Ancient Era game wasn't so good. A distant civ (later learned to be Rome) got most of the early wonders including Stonehenge, the Pyramids, and the Colossus. Japan and the Ottomans competed for the Great Lighthouse. I was very pleased that I still managed to get the Great Library, despite getting Writing fairly late.

In the Classical Era, I signed RA's with all 4 of my neighbors. I got the Oracle. After a few turns working on the Hanging Gardens, it was built faraway (Rome). Another faraway civ (Aztecs) got the Great Wall - that seemed a minor footnote at the time but later turned out to be a major turning point since I believe it really helped the Aztecs dominate the second continent.

In the Medieval Era, I was near the top in terms of tech. I managed to get all of the Wonders (except Machu Picchu for obvious reasons, since there are no mountains near the start). First did HS, with an GE to hurry the PT. Built Chichen Itza while waiting for Chivalry to develop, and then I built Angkor Wat, Himeji Castle, and Notre Dame.

Shortly before and after Chivalry, Ottoman (and then Japan) started to make moves against me, moving troops nearby. I wasn't worried about them militarily since I could hold them off in the pass with all my Chariot Archers, but I was more concerned about losing the RA's. In each case, I denounced them, which dissuaded them so the RA's could bear fruit.

Once I had my 4 Chariot Archers upgraded into Mandelaku Cavalry (I bought another 2 more) I went to town on my continent. Quickly smashed Suleiman and then Washington. When I had Wu down to one side, Rome and then Monty had sent Caravels to establish contact. Mopped up China and then Japan. It was now time to find and explore the second continent by sending my army of 5/6 Mandelaku Cavalry.

SURPRISE #1: When I discovered the other continent I was surprised to see the Aztec domination. Normally when I play, Monty doesn't do too well. He focuses on military early on, doesn't expand too much, *never* builds any wonders, and is fairly behind on tech (but loves his Jaguar Warriors). So I was quite surprised to see that he was the runaway civ on the second continent and had in fact built *two* wonders (Great Wall and Machu Picchu). He was also embroiled in war against both Rome and Genghis along with all the minor civs (who were allied with Rome). After seeing them fight, I realized that the Great Wall was a big factor contributing to Monty's success. He was able to wage war and take cities, but Rome and Mongolia had trouble taking any Aztec cities due to the movement penalties.

I considered attacking Monty, but decided against it. He had Cannons already and combined with the Great Wall, it would be an uphill struggle to attack at this point especially since he soon got Cavalry as well. If I had cleaned up my continent earlier, I could have attacked before Monty became so strong. I also considered attacking Rome and Genghis, and I could probably have taken them out. But since Monty was the major threat and Rome/Mongols were actually keeping the Aztecs somewhat in check, I decided against it. So at this point my best option was to wait until I had Tanks (yes, requiring me to go through two full eras). So I holed up, allied with all the remaining CS's and RA'ed away.

The Renaissance Era started out with me behind in tech. I believe I used a GS or two to get some key techs for wonder building. I hard built the Forbidden Palace, followed by the Sistine Chapel and the Kremlin. Monty (or Rome) beat me to the Taj Mahal just as I had discovered Printing Press. I got Big Ben and was going for Archaeology when I realized that Monty already had Military Science (Cavalry). Nonetheless, I proceeded with the Louvre and was pleasantly surprised when I still managed to build Brandenburg, especially considering the Wonder flavor traits (Gate has 25 Offense while normally Monty has a 9 for Offense) and how long Monty had to go for it.

Due to RA's, I shot ahead in tech. Monty was at war with everyone (surprise, surprise). Rome and Mongolia eventually signed RA's as well, so Rome gradually inched ahead of Monty in tech.

LESSON #1: Unfortunately, Monty took out Tyre before I could even encounter them. Normally I like to liberate minor civs but this was bad for me due to OCC. I later learned (after I had won the game), that OCC doesn't give you the option to liberate - you are forced to raze down conquered minor civ cities. Monty also came close to taking out Warsaw while it was Rome's ally, so I saved the Poles but allying with them and asking Monty to stop.

In the Industrial Era, I built the Statue of Liberty, got Tanks with Combustion and got ready for war. My Mandelaku Cavalry had good promotions (March, Mobility, a few with Blitz) due to my earlier war campaign so they were ready to do some serious damage. Right before I attacked, Rome actually attacked Monty as well with a bunch of Artillery and Riflemen(?). I hit Tenochtitlan straight off to eliminate that offensive Wall. Took out half of Monty's cities till I declared peace with him so I could take out Rome. While Rome and Monty continued to war, I declared on Rome and took out his capital and half his cities. I then took out 2 of Mongolia's 4 cities for the win. In the meantime I built the Eiffel Tower and was a couple of turns away from building Cristo Redeemer.

LESSON #2: Normally when I go Domination I'm a genocidal maniac and like to completely wipe out the civilizations (genocidal warmonger penalty be damned!). On the second continent, I did, however, save quite a bit of time by settling for peace with the Aztecs and Rome after taking out their capitals and half their cities. In longer term games, that can still be a mistake (since they might attack you later on) but it was a useful lesson here.

Social Policies: Started with Honor, then Tradition for Aristocracy (I love Wonders!). Then completed both Honor and Tradition. Later, I opened Patronage, and then Rationalism. Completed the left halves of both trees.

311 turns was a bit longer than I had hoped, but I chalk it up to the failed Chariot Archer strategy and waiting too long to dominate my continent (which led to waiting too long to attack the other continent). Also, I probably could have shaved off a bunch of times if I hadn't gone all Wonder crazy, but I always love building Wonders! :)

1) I press the normal printscreen button and it created a *.tga file - i convert that to jpg using XnView - there are other programs out there, but i use this one.

2)stats are prob fixed - but outcomes vary -> if in one game the Ai has to make a decision about moving on a hill for example - and he has 2 hills nearby he will sometimes choose 1 of them, sometimes the other -> this ofc ramifies itself over more turns and yields diff results. That's how i see it anyway.

3) I wondered about that in the beginning too - if you Win in turn X, save it the same turn, but after you get the Win msg.

-------------------

Also, a question, doesn't the Great Wall get obsolete with artillery?... and since you've gone Tanks upgraded from Mandelaku just so you can attack Monty - why were you scared of the Great Wall, when it's... obsolete. Also...GW doesn't slow down tanks to 1 movement - it just decreases 1 movement if i'm not mistaking.
