SSE / WE Walkthrough for BtS [Insane series]

Leader: Huayna Capac
Level: Immortal

During the summer, I left off after completing the “Insane Walkthrough”. Now that I have returned, I decided to up the level for the community again. I then used Roosevelt to create a Deity Wonder Economy walkthrough, unfortunately I have discovered there is no interest in such a thing anymore. Everyone wants BtS now, and nothing else. So that being said, I scraped the shots and fired up my new gift of BtS.

While I stumbled along my deity game in BtS, I failed my first try at it. I ended up losing due to wrong tech paths and much other unfamiliarity to the game changes. There really is a tremendous difference between going from Warlords to BtS than there was from Vanilla to Warlords. While the civopedia does help a lot, it does leave a lot to only be answered by trial and error. However, all is not lost. I learned a lot about the new gimmicks in the game, like the new spy system, and decided to retry again.

However, since I still don’t know every single detail on BtS, I decided to instead to do an Immortal walkthrough for now. And after this, I will switch back to deity.

Now, lets add some points. Everyone’s seen me use Ghandi before, and Ramesses. I want to try to show another flavour, and decided to try out someone I never wanted to. That is Huayna Capac. I really don’t like his financial trait, as I think it sucks. However, just to show both sides of the fence, I’m going to give it a try. And also, to try and use maximize what I think is a poor trait, I will do something else different…

That’s right, I will build my first cottage. In fact, I will TRY to force myself to build quite a few cottages, so now you can always say…. “well I remember watching Obsolete use cottages once before…” And we will see how that turned out.

I definitely won’t like doing this, but once is ok I guess.

The other rules apply. No lightbulbing… and turn speed is normal to prevent marathon/epic crutches. Also generated map will be on continents mode to prevent simple vassal/conquest snowballing exploits.

And now… I must admit being very unfamiliar still with BtS and with HC, I did a few quick turn tests early with him to test out a few things, and then I just decided to go with it and head to the end. Things went rather well, despite a lot of buggy lock-ups on me, but that may be due to me not having enough RAM memory at the moment. At least I am happy enough to get BtS to run for now. And of course I had to constantly use the civopedia during this walkthrough to recheck WTH was up with corporations, etc, lol.

P.S. Past walkthroughs for Warlords can be found here:

The Insane Walkthrough (Ramesses)
The Unreal Walkthrough (Ramesses)
The Unreal Walkthrough (Part II Ghandi)
The Impossible Walkthrough (Ramesses)
The Impossible Walkthrough (Part II Ghandi)

And for the final note, a couple of the myth’s I want to clear for today are:

#1 The Wonder Economy won’t work on BtS because of the nerfing of cavalry.

#2 The Wonder Economy wont’ work on BtS because of the super improved AI (laugh).

Well, we’ve come a long way, but at least I know SOME people have some faith in me after all this. So… let’s get to work shall we?

Ahh, our start has some good, and bad issues. Good is the cows, unfortunately we don’t have the tech to take immediate use out of them. So we COULD research AH now while growing out a worker. Which is viable option and will let us take off quickly in a peaceful strategy, or we can prepare for war first, and then resort to my SSE/WE method if no one is near by.

Since we are starting on a hill, we will also get a little bit of a production bonus in the capital as well. This can help greatly with the cheap que units. In any case, I decided to work on a second que unit, while moving the original up north since he is already located north of my starting city.

Ran into Wang Kon
We are researching AH by the way.

BC 2240

I stockpiled a bunch of Ques just outside Wang’s capital, and then declared war trying to knock it out asap.

BC 2120

I was able to take his capital. But now look at this. A worker is busy on another founded city. And the AI is keeping it there because it thinks it’s safe due to the distance of 2 squares for me to move.

Of course it doesn’t think I can use roads…. Because this is the AI. It’s stupid.

Needless to say, I snatched the free worker. Thanks!

Met Willem
That’s sort of ok. In the past game of mine I found him to be very dossile and not wanting to cause trouble. That’s just fine for me right now.

In the meantime, I stopped making ques in my capital, and started to get to building instead. My other capital I captured can take over the military units while I’m still at war. It will actually get to the front much quicker that way!

First I made a worker, and then I went to work on the cows, while I was building the Stonehenge. Unfortunately a random event just happened and I had a cow field destroyed. Arggg! But I’ll fix that in a giffy. The main thing is I will have the SH completed at the end of this turn.

I fixed the cow-plot, and we will have The Great Wall completed at the end of the turn. I don’t really need it for barb protection with these que units, however it still is a WW that I want to take for a few other reasons.

Researching Priesthood now so I can get on that oracle next.

Captured city of Wonsan.
And now, to capture his next capital a little up north. And very close too, how convenient. Poor guy has to bear with the fact that I am using his original capital against him now, yet to take another capital city of his.

Oracle will be completed at the end of this turn, and it is timed perfectly again.
I will have writing researched at the end as well. This will allow me to instantly choose mathematics. I can then get my chopping bonus, and apply it to the Hanging Gardens.

It should be noted that I got a little unfortunate in that I don’t have any stone or marble near by. Nevertheless, I will still continue a wonder economy now and try to just improvise by using the trees around me.

And a little barb city is now growing between my two capital sites. That’s actually great. They can’t be much a nuisance because I have the GW, and if they want to build me a city so I don’t have to do it myself, then thanks.

My first GP arrives…

Captured P’
The city has three jewl squares to it. Not bad for luxoury resources.

PS: And my first Great General arrives also from the bloodshed. I absorbed him into my capital, despite I wouldn’t be using it for making military units anymore. The reason being, is I want his rep bonus to filter through my oxford & academy buildings which will be going there in the future.

BC 800
Pyramids will be completed at the end of the turn. I had a little excess food, but now I am starving! Yup, those random events sure love to destroy cow plots. I just can’t wait to hit the rep civic and open up some ceiling height in this city.

Note: Researching meditation now because it unlocks a few interesting wonders.

“The Last of Wang”

I finally got him! That now gives me a total of one, two….five total cities! And some of them are very ideal with good food and resources. I’m off to a very good start here. And I’m still wonder hogging in my original city despite the land/city grabs.

Note: And I can not help but smile at the local workers who are now forced to work under my empire.

BC 425

So far so good! Hanging Gardens will be completed at the end of this turn. That’s another population point for every city! Also the extra health is great on these levels as well. Best of all, it never goes obsolete (no pun intended).

Note: Researching aesthetics so that I can pull down TGL before anyone else gets a chance to as well.

Boy, it just gets better & better from here…

Another GP arrives. This time we lightbulb him to ensure our domination win through the free monotheism tech (just kidding). Put him to work!

Now, best of all, look at what I’m completing this turn! That’s right, the mighty Temple of Artemis. Who says you can’t get it on Immortal? Hell, no marble needed, that’s why so many trees are missing. Notice how I have not one, or two, but THREE workers there (thanks to Wang) slaving away as hard as they can to win the race for this wonder. It’s a nice wonder, not really because of the 100% trade routes, but that free priest is what I am mostly after. It also has a longer lifespan in BtS now, so I love it all the more now.

Note: I have an unhappy face, which you may think is odd. That’s right. I didn’t use Rep yet. The problem with with HC is he is not spiritual. I would have lost a turn due to anarchy, so I was too scared to switch just yet. I wanted EVERY turn to count for both my que assembly line, and for my wonder race. You really should time these things as best you can on these levels. Just one turn could make you lose a wonder, or even a war.

Note: Literature being researched… for reasons obvious.

And look at this, we are now at 1 million souls.

Even better, we are completing the Paya wonder this turn. I really love this one, it doesn’t give you artist pollution, and lets you unlock any religious civic. This is great as I never go up the religious tech tree at all, as every expert knows that’s a junk branch starting right from monotheism. Now, sometimes it’s OK to get mono in rare circumstances for OR, but that’s as far as anyone should ever go. Collecting these junker techs give you more WFUABTA so why would you bother? They are so overly priced as well.

We completed The Great Library, and here is a look inside, with our two free scientists, and the free priest from ToA. And to add more strength, we have a few other absorbed specialists.

Note: Did we capture just about every wonder yet, or what?

Another specialist arrives, and it’s a Ninja. I can’t bare to use him to infiltrate, though you’ll see many people raving about this. I prefer to maximize him by absorbing him with the rest.

There were two world wonders still I haven’t made yet, and I didn’t put them in my fortress city for a reason. The Parthenon and Statue of Zeus both create artist pollution. So instead I am building them in two other cities, where their pollution will never catch up to my fortress for GPPs. This lets me get some wonder benefits from them, and not have to worry about repercussions. I don’t mind denying these from the AI, especially since they may use artists later against me to cause culture problems.

And now, I gain both of these in the same turn.

Perfect.

Note: Researching civil service. I could go after philosophy, but I don’t want to risk getting another religion. I want to make sure someone founds it first. Even though I will start work on the AW turns later, at least CS will help with the hammer boost to make up a little for it.

Another GP arrives. Do we burn him off for stupid monotheism, or absorb him.

Hmm….

Burn him off… or absorb him…

Burn him off or…..

Ok, I’ll let you guys take a guess on that one.

Also I have our infamous chicken pizza wonder prepared here. We are losing a lot of trees, but at least we haven’t lost a single wonder yet! Somehow, chicken pizza doesn’t seem worth it, but I want those GPPs!

Woohoo! Captured the barb city, which now puts me at a total of 6 cities. That’s all you really need to win on even deity, so I basically have the game wrapped up at this point. However, I suspect everyone still wants to see a finish, so I will just push on regardless.

Note: I spread my religion over to the leader, and got him to adapt Hinduism. Now I can target him against Willem, and will watch them end up in a religious war. Willem won’t like me one bit, but he is passive so screw him.

This turn we will complete the Ankor Wat. Another world wonder that every intermediate player used to hate, but I loved. And I still love it more each game release.

And again tech timing is perfect. We complete the wonder this turn, as well as finish researching Paper. This means we can immediately start on the UoS next turn, and even apply any OF to it as well.

Note: Even at this stage, I am making 40 GPPs per turn. That is without the philosophical trait, or pacifism, or NE, or golden-age, or even any running specialists. This is all due to the collected wonders. And none of them are polluting GPPs either, as we made sure to place those in other cities.

Of course, there is a debate on adding the artist GPPs into the main pool and just taking chances. That’s great when it works… but not so great when it fails. If someone wishes to do some math analysis on this sometime, I’d sure like to read into it.

Self explanatory really.

Note: Researching Education now. As soon as that is done, we race through liberalism.

And what do you know. We won the liberalism race, then chose nationalism so that we could go the constitution route. This also allows us to get right to work on the Taj Mahal. It’s more useful in BtS because now Golden Ages double the effects of GPPs as well.

Note: While I had 46 GPPs just before the Taj was completed, the value right after (including GPPS from the Taj itself) jumped to only 82. In theory, we should have received a bigger jump in GPPs. However, the reason for this is that we had built the Parthenon, and the effects of the GA is only applied to the BASE value, and not the TOTAL.
