Rerolling
Hi guys, 1st post!
When do you all reroll? If you're going to reroll, is it always in the first few turns (once you instinctively know you're in a weak start position and are in for a struggle), or do you also consider rerolling later (e.g. after IW if you don't have any iron)? |

You can usually find a way to beat any map. But is it really worth the effort if all you want to do is relax? I reroll quite a bit for all kinds of reasons like if I dont feel like killing Alex or Toku or if I have to research Trapping just to hook up a luxury.

Hi and welcome!
I play two types of games. The first being going after certain VCs getting highscores and/or lowest finish dates. In these cases I do a lot of rerolling for getting an optimal map. The second type are games with random settings where I play with what I get and decide my VC according to conditions. Never rerolling. Sometimes I reroll also to get the worst starts possible. These games actually tend to be the most interesting. Remember losing can be fun as well! |

Hello. First post too.
Rerolling was my way of play until few weeks ago, when I realised it is all about headache. After about 20 rolls I found that no map will ever be perfect, unless I worldbuild, and even then, hmm, tricky. And time consuming. So I gave up. What I do now, is 'random everything'; difficulty - emperor. (King - 90% success rate, immortal 20% for me). Something in the middle gives me challenge. |

It depends on my mood and what type of game. If im playing an OCC/tall game ill reroll until I have 2 bonus resources, 2 unique resources (might reroll if the main one is a trapping one), and a river.
If im going wide, Ill usually play with just about anything. But when I decid to LS rush and after researching iron working and discovering I have no iron, doesn't mean I won't rage quit. Does anyone else feel like certain Civ's start bias is so bad you can't play with them? |

For myself its turn 1 that I make the to play or to reroll decision.
My form of victory doesn't depend upon any strategic resources. Archers for defense works well and can be promoted to crossbows.

I make the decision by turn 3-4 at the latest. I will reload to the initial autosave if I had to go to turn 3-4 instead of turn 1-2. Call it cheesy but meh.
Sometimes I feel like the map generator is biased toward AI civs, but ultimately it's just probability. On any given map, how many totally awesome starts are there? Now how many total players are there? And you (we) are just one of those. I will absolutely 100% of the time reroll if I start in desert or tundra without food resources. This happens way too often. IMO both of those tile types need to be reduced by 30% on all maps except those that showcase them (ice age, sandstorm). |

I normally play random everything on Immortal or Deity and never re-roll. Some of the best games I've had were on difficult maps where I've had to struggle. You get a much better satisfaction out of winning a hard game, and if you lose, well, usually you learn more.

Unless I'm pursuing a very specific goal e.g. early rush and get stuck on my own continent I never reroll. And don't pursue very specific goals often since that does require rerolling, which I'm not fond of.

Agree with Moriarte, endless rerolls are a major PIA, and probably not that productive, I try to limit myself to no more than 5 rerolls. All I really care about is a fairly food rich capital setting on a river.

I belong to those who usually roll the map few times to get a satisfactory result unless I'm just screwing around when I take whatever I'll get & work with that. However, it's not the über start I'm looking for but an interesting & pleasing one - what that is varies a bit but endless grassland/plains are for rabbits, not for me.
After settling I usually play ~100 rounds & then decide if the game is interesting enough to finish or at least to get oneself to a certain victory position. I have several unfinished games since I can't be bothered to do the exact same thing over & over again by just swapping the suite I'm wearing. G |

First post also.
I usually re-roll if I'm doing one city challenge and I end up on a coast. Maybe it's not so bad if there is a lux in the water. |

I used to re-roll a lot, but lately if I'm looking for that 'optimal start' (which is not every game) I will just check the 'Legendary Start' resources option. Saves a lot of wasted time.

I only rerolled once and that was because my capital had only 1 luxury nearby, in a tundra with barren snow 2 hexes up north and about 8 mountains in the workable area of my city.
(Archipelago map.) I was going for 4 achievements in that session so I rerolled to get something more usable. |

I reroll if I get a crappy start. It only takes a few minutes to play 80 turns or so, so there is nothing lost by dumping a game. Usually I will only do this if I find myself surrounded by war mongers and I am looking for a peacefull victory, when I'm all alone when I want a domination victory, or end up with no resources.

I reroll when playing OCC type games if I get a start with a large percentage of tiles that can't be improved and provide little or no yield. Otherwise I reroll if I get one of those arctic starts where everything is snow and tundra, same goes for a truly barren desert start.
Either way I'm rerolling on the first turn, rerolling after playing a few turns is too much of cherry picking for my taste. |

I'll restart if I find I'm pinned between a civ(s) and the surroundings are low growth / production hell. Often happens when I'm on the edge of a big desert and while I might have space, most of it is crap.
I won't shy away from military action though. I had a recent game on a huge map with Korea and Japan starting shockingly close to me (heck on ANY map size they would have been too close...) while the rest of the map was WAY OPEN. In those cases I just need some production and I can usually bust out. I nailed Japan early, puppeted or burned their cities, and then hit Korea and took the heart of their empire (nicely rich with gold) and I'm in great shape. Production is the key. If I can get some good early production I can work my way out of most bad spots. Also if I'm going military I feel the need to totally wipe out the first close neighbor I hit. I know the game mechanics don't quite work that way but I've found leaving a dude around near my territory means the next time there is a fight I'm #1 on their hit list and even if just a distraction having someone nearby hit you from another angle sucks. As you can tell.... I like to fight. Last edited by duxup; May 17, 2012 at 12:17 PM. |
