In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all – security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.

Last live performance on stage that I saw was a sex show in Amsterdam.

dumb question. What is a sex show?

We don't have them here where I live, although you think they would.

Are you just watching people have sex? I don't get it. Why would anyone want to do that.

Some of the performers were just having sex, sometimes it's a pole dancer, and sometimes it's... different.

It wasn't that good tbh, and I definitely wouldn't go again.

Speaking of sex shows ,one of THE worst things I have ever done is when our school hosted a Canadian school rugby side that was touring Australia . Each member stayed at the house of a player from our side .

I got a really nice guy who was a bit of an outsider (vegetarian , into Amnesty International....not the norm as far as school footy players) . He had a girlfriend back in Canada who he was determined to be faithful to . Just a quiet , mature upstanding guy.

Anyway , a group of us and our Canadian guests snuck out of our houses at midnight and went to Kings Cross , Sydney's red light district . We got this poor kid absolutely blind drunk and he ended up losing his virginity on stage at a sex show , cheating on his girlfriend to boot .

And for the coup de gras , a few days later it was time to say good bye and drop all our Canadian mates at the charter bus . My poor guest , now getting into the swing of things , told us he had never tried pot and was very keen to do so . So just before taking him to the bus to meet all his teammates , we loaded him up with 2 or 3 very big cones of strong pot . He was absolutely smashed , literally green with eyes bulging out of his head . And before he knew it , he was being dropped at the bus with all his team mates and teachers . We bailed right away so I never saw the reception he got , but rest assured it would have been ugly .

I don't look back at all this with great pride , but it seemed pretty funny at the time.

I saw Stone Temple Pilots at Avila Beach Festival.
Yes, they are still touring and were actually quite good.

I must have listened to their second album a zillion times . For a good year or 2 it seemed like anywhere you went it was playing . I love the guitar work , extremely original technique and chord progressions.

Most recent thing I saw was a stage version of Yes, Minister. It was alright - the first half was mostly just setting up the second, which was slightly better than alright and probably improved by alcohol at the break. It did give me hope for a stage version of Thick of It in a decade or so time.

Just Tuesday, a acting troop(?) came to our school and preformed Romeo and Juliet. Was pretty cool, because they did it sorta like how it would of been done way back, barely any props, same people doing multiple parts, only problem was there were two real women in it.

So which of the female parts was played by a guy? 'Cause there are 3 female roles in Romeo and Juliet: Juliet, Lady Capulet, and the Nurse.

I saw One Man Lord of the Rings a year or so ago - if he can handle every part in that I'm sure one of the women can multi-task in Shakespeare.

That would be a neat trick, considering there are scenes where all three of them are onstage at the same time...

There was a theater troupe that did Shakespeare every semester at my university - 5 people (usually 3 men and 2 women) with minimal props. If one person was playing 2 characters in the same scene, they just did a lot of running around.

In the case of Romeo and Juliet, that would have resulted in a seriously schizoid-seeming bunch of scenes among Juliet, her mother, and her nurse, since Juliet and the Nurse were definitely NOT in agreement with anything Lady Capulet had to say. I can't imagine the same actress could pull off doing Juliet and the Nurse at the same time, since there's 30-40 years' difference in the characters' ages.

Well, it was all in inflection and accents (and occasionally a single prop). Very minimalist.

Last Tuesday I came to London after a quick visit to Wales to look for a house for rent. I went to the National Theatre to watch Collaborators, a play that imagined about meetings between Bulgakov and Stalin. A dark surreal comedy. I learned of the play via this article in the Economist which studied two plays, one of which was Collaborators. It was a brilliant play.
