CIV5 - Opinions?
I DLed it on steam (for £5) and I have to admit, I was under-impressed.
It looks pretty, but had some serious problems like a lack of realistic-start Earth maps, and also that "one unit per tile" rule is bonkers. I reckon I will stick to CIV2, as these new games have never came close to re-capturing the flow and feel of the interface... Can't they see that a CIV2 clone with more techs, civs, buildings and no-limits would be perfect? Anyone else tried this flawed "classic" CIV5?

And cant YOU see, that there are Dozens of Games with 3D Graphics in "open Space",
or "open Range"? The Lack of CIV2 Graphic, AI, Diplomacy, Resources, damned, CIV3 would have been a great Deal, IF it would have had an Events.txt, MoreMapGaming, a little bit better Modding Links for not getting totally crazy, and a damned working fast Game... Curt, as i played CIV3 and CIV4, i was bored. And that Problem you will find in any other Games -most Games-: That Mankind is stupid. Thats a great Philosophy, a great Revolution in Mind, that any Failures which are made, are made by damned stupid People. Thats all: Stupidity. The whole Explanation, the whole Truth of any Problems. The holy Miracle of Failures, a whole Species makes, by having conquered everything, having reached everything and owning everything, is: Complete Stupidity of damned stupid dead Stones. The Money became King, the C+ or C++ became King, the Establishments of damned stupid dead Stones became King. Not the Work is King, not creative Minds are King, not the Hopes and Wishes and Hearts are King, that is the stupid mortal World. That you have to die in self-consuming Death, and not to love in Mind-opened Ranges. And so you will get Clones of Games, with Bugs, Mindstops after 2 Seconds, and a Bug Clone Mindless Company with super Graphics and no single good Thought. A new Messiah will come, and kill all these stupid dead Stones in a huge Mind-cultural Revolution, and then you will get your CIV Ultima with great Graphics, great Diplomacy, nonstop half-2D Units, Resources, Terrain Graphics, and to mod in a free Data Community. So dont pray for a better Game, pray to God... or you will die in this, without any Conclusion... sweet Days... ![]() ![]() |

Ahem - Yes!
![]() So I should dump a life of atheistic cynicism and pray for the game messiah! Actually, the ways things are going with games, it might be a valid option... PS I agree with the part about money/deadlines being more important than a good product. .

Civ V is even worse than III (rubbish) and IV (somewhat decent), if such a thing can be believed- the game itself has a few promising concepts but is fundamentally too broken in its mechanics to be playable. Perhaps the new xpack will fix it, but I have my doubts.
A shame that fairline has dropped off the face of the Earth. Was looking forward to squeezing another decade of life out of Civ II, at least |

Dont think i am so-called "religious", Folks, i dont need to be, cause i am God...
![]() Yes, the most Games i played, were too bad made and too boring, and when i began to modd them, it was a pity, and was a bit sad to see, that some Slots were "broken", that means, that some Files or Slots seemed to be thought, but never finished up... o yes, and every Dilettantism has to be encoded, so that the Hell works on... its almost perfect. Quote:
"The Life, Folks, IS Cynicism, to be cynic is senseless, cause we ARE, even if we are NOT, and ARE we, Life is too heavy at all." a Gentleman told once... In this World of heavy Stupidity, and a senseless Capitalism, and a Mankind which is completely absorbed by Ideas, which were made in Ages of Anger, Hate and hard Edges, Frontiers of Being, and which now would be overcome, if the Mankind would not be completely absorbed by, it is hard to work with damned Idiots, which ARE absorbed by their own Madness, grown over Centuries of Anger, Hate and... now we close this damned Circle... in this World you cannot expect too much. Cause IF there is Wealth and Glory, the Mankind is NOT. The Silver Knight dont waits for these, which die in Madness... Greetings! ![]() The most Games show the Edges of a mad World, in its Deep broken and insane, to build up Skyscrapers replaces not the Mind, consumed, and broke, and Mankinds Shame. |

It requires Steam, so I won't ever bother with it. I did play it a little at a friend's house,
and was underwhelmed.

I bought Civ V and I really enjoyed it. The games are long, and the computer sometimes give a genuine challenge. The landscape engine is beautiful, I think Civ V is one of the best Civilization games so far. I must admit however that it is kind of funny to me that the civilization games are only now starting to realize levels of depth and subtlety that Firaxis first achieved more than ten years ago with Alpha Centauri.
That said I don't expect Civ V will enjoy the long afterlife Civ II obviously has. I think the modability of Civ II, and its unparalleled modding community is what keeps us continuing to play it still after all these years. |

UPDATE!
![]() After a few shots, I have let the game grow on me somewhat - There are some fun aspects, like the hex map factor, but mostly the "one unt per tile" rule can be tiresome in big campaigns. It will never replace CIV2 for me, but I can say that it has a more classic core than CIV3 and CIV4... Now - Time to go back to some CIV2 modding!
