G-Minor XXXII

ImageWhile the general Hall of Fame is an ongoing competition, we like to run time-definite competitions between updates that we call Gauntlets. Standard Hall of Fame rules (*) still apply, but any games meeting the settings will be counted towards the Gauntlet.

(*) Please read the >> HOF rules << BEFORE playing!

Settings:
  • Victory Condition: Culture (though all victory conditions must be enabled)
  • Difficulty: Prince
  • Map Size: Small
  • Map Type: Lakes
  • Speed: Standard
  • Leader: Aztec (Montezuma)
  • Required: One City Challenge
  • Opponents: Any
  • Version: SV8
  • Date: 1st to 16th July 2012
The earliest finish date wins, with score as a tiebreaker.

Well I decided to give this one a run. Turn 317 finish, ick. I screwed up in the end mistiming my Oxford by 1 turn, ended up costing me 12. My start was really nice. Marble and Dyes with 2 large lakes and a few smaller ones all around me. I befriended a Military CS early through barb clearance. It provided me with all my military aside from my initial Jaguar scouts. I didn't get a Cultural CS till about half way though.

Ultimately I reached 45 pop and was able to pop 3 GGenerals at the end for a 30 turn golden age to rush my final buildings and Utopia which took 9 turns.

I finished Utopia on turn 346 vs Washington, Elizabeth, Hiawatha, Askia and Oda Nobunaga as a practice run. At the time of victory, only Hiawatha was still alive (I fail at being peaceful)

Spawn was fairly bleeeh. I got a bunch of empty plains and 2 blocks of water. Diplomacy was also a pain as there was never a 3-way alliance. I was all buddy-buddy with Washington and Hiawatha. But then Washington randomly declares war. Japan rushed me with 8 units starting from turn 30~40 ish. My lone scout archer and my capital killed off all of them. Was quite the culture feast.

I'll do a proper run tomorrow. I should rush for Industrial Era. That +2 Culture per Wonder policy from Freedom was awesome but I got it wayyy too late. I couldn't get domination out of my head and killed Japan and USA with level 4 artilleries. I shouldn't even have bothered building any of that stuff (barracks, great heroic, armory, military academy, gate) and just camp on a lone garrisoned siege unit.

Should have went currency production and bribe cultural CS instead. There were 3 cult CS in the game and 2 of them got killed by washington :'(

Single city challenge makes culture victory surprisingly slow.

Hello all,

I'm a new poster, but definitely not new to CFC. This is my first crack at the HOF gauntlet. (And also my first OCC!)

I was able to finish on turn 382, with only 2 cultural CS allies for pretty much the whole game. Opponents were England, Songhai, America, Ottomans, and Iroquois.

Destroyed Askia after he attacked my cultural CS. Too bad, because he was the friendliest at the time. Never had a lot of resources to trade with anyone.

By the end Hiawatha was running away but I still had the tech lead and the CPT (see screenshot). I destroyed both one of Washington's and Hiawatha's cities to keep then in check, but I don't think it made much of a difference. As soon as I started Utopia, both DoWed but focused on my CS allies instead and I was able to hang on.

The Aztec UA wasn't as strong as I would have hoped, and I probably played a little too peacefully, but I was able to get most of the important wonders.

Not bad for a first submission? It's a start.

The Aztec UA is excellent in the beginning, especially paired with the Honor Opener. 12 Culture for Brutes, 8 for Archers and 20 for Pikemen. Yes it does lose steam later in the game even when you're at war all the time but it helps.

In my game I went Honor, Tradition, Aristocracy, All of Piety, Legalism, Landed Elite, Monarchy, All of Freedom, Finish Tradition, Patronage, Right side of Honor, Finish Patronage, Finish Honor.

Never done one of these before, thought I'd give it a try. Finished on turn 344, but I wasted at least 15 turns in the middle there. I went Tradition-Piety-Freedom-Patronage, then got stuck on which ones to go next. Forgot that I couldn't run Freedom and Order at the same time, so I stalled one of my SPs by a couple of turns in order to reach the Industrial Era and unlock Order with it...only to realise going down that tree was stupid and finishing off with Commerce instead (which wasn't particularly useful).

Anyway, apart from that the game went pretty smoothly - perhaps didn't have enough science in the late game, because it was taking me a while to get to Radio for the Broadcast Tower. Does anyone have any tips for how to turn gold into culture? I found I ended up with ridiculous surpluses in the late game that I couldn't use (I'd already got all of the CSs on-side).

directly you can buy your broadcast towers rather than building them,
indirectly you should be buying RAs to get to radio and such earlier,
and as the aztecs you can always buy units and start a war with the AI with the most units.

Civ5 My Aztec Campaign

At First I was lucky with settler location. 2 lux, 1 food...

I explored the world, killed barbarians...

After discovering five non-cultural cs, i was lucky and allied to Warswaw

Despite a single war with Napoleon, I made a peacefull game

I took Piety, Tradition as first Social Policies

I managed to be Friendly to all Civs in the Game.

Spent all the time constructing wonders and culture buildings

Now at 980 AD with 2/5 for Utopia, and lvl19 city Im pretty sure ill win the game

Slightly OT, but I used these conditions for a G&K game, and finished turn 295 with a mediocre start (2 incense as only lux, and just 2 lake tiles).

I had another crack at this and was able to finish at 318. Using a combination of Honor and Tradition seems like a better starting strategy than pure tradition, as far as I can tell. Was able to milk quite a lot of extra early culture out of camp bashing.

The geography of the world made it difficult to really attack the civs who had lots of units, so I perhaps didn't do as much warring as I could have done. But overall I didn't feel like I missed many glaring opportunities to improve, although I'm sure there were plenty of optimizations in there.
