Capital Recommend a movie thread

This is for everyone, not just me. But I admit, I'm looking for movies to fill my netflix queue.

Sadly, many movies of the last 10 years I don't like, but then again some of my favorite movies of all times have been released the last 10 years. It's just many movies are smaller, and fly under the radar. In some cases, I missed them because I don't pay attention to entertainment media or box office results etc.

You can recommend any type of movie, but I think it's most beneficial to everyone to recommend smaller movies that are easily overlooked and missed. Everyone knows about movies like The Avengers (which is the type of movie I have no intention of seeing- I'm sick of superheroes) because it made so much money. But what about smaller dramatic films that don't make big money in the box office? What are some smaller films released the past 10 years that are very good films?

In the end, more than freedom, they wanted security. They wanted a comfortable life, and they lost it all – security, comfort, and freedom. When the Athenians finally wanted not to give to society but for society to give to them, when the freedom they wished for most was freedom from responsibility, then Athens ceased to be free and was never free again.

Welp, so much for that scheme.

There had to be films released that weren't Michael Bay films.

No, I mean, I haven't seen any "smaller films" in the last ten years, unless they're "smaller films" that are actually quite well-known films despite being indie or quirky.

Let me open the scene :
What about The Nine Lives of Thomas Katz (2001) ?

Genre : absurd metaphysical British sci-fi.
Plot : XXIst century London experiences doomsday in the coming of Thomas Katz, the incarnation of nothingness.
"What... is your name ?
- No.
- Is that your name ?
- Yes."

Trailer :

link to video.

One of my personnal favourites (and I'm a junkie for sci-fi). Truly a one-of-a-kind movie.

The original Cube was a great movie. Came out more than 10 years ago and it's a bit of a cult classic now, so it might not be appropriate for this thread..

but who knows. Go see it! The sequels are ok.

You didn't say in which direction your tastes lean, but here are some movies I found interesting and are also on Netflix;

Memento (2000) - complex, psychological
Super Troopers (2002) - comedy
CSA: Confederate Sates of America - alternate history
City of Life and Death (2009) - The Rape of Nanking, Chinese perspective
Howl (2010) - Ginsberg's poem, trail and psychodelia
Melancholia (2011) - Artsy end-of-the-world

I may have been a little stoned when I watched the last one, about the control room guys. I don't remember the "Do you believe in God" question being explained. When it came up mid-movie, I was like "wow, didn't see that coming."

Some of my recomendations:

The Grey
Rango
The Other Guys
The Beaver (Mel Gibson can still make decent movies)
The Sunset Limited (not for everyone)
Defiance
Trans Siberian
It's Kind of a Funny Story
You Don't Know Jack
Kung Fu Hustle
SPlinter

I would highly recommend The Lives of Others, which is about life in the German Democratic Republic (and how it is monitored).

Other recommendations would be A.I., Ararat, Black book (also known as Zwartboek, as it's a Dutch movie) and Traffic.

The Help (2011) - Really touching story. I think it should have won Best Picture over The Artist.
Moonrise Kingdom (2012) - Just came out a few months ago, but I'm not sure if it's in theaters. Funny, has some great actors and beautiful cinematography.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World (2009?) - A must-watch for anyone who loves video games.
Up In the Air - One of George Clooney's best performances.

I guess everybody else has a much different understanding of "smaller films" than I do.

Does Primer count as sufficiently small?

It's a low-budget (iirc 8000 dollar in all) production about time travel, it's told in a non-linear narrative and explores both the initial discovery of the time travel device and the consequences that control over time travel has on the friendship of the main characters.

It's the only time travel movie I know that's internally consistent.

The movie itself is not exactly entertaining in the strict sense, but incredibly interesting in the way it is told and how you have to figure out most of what happens on your own.

They made a third one?

Yeah, the first one is definitely creepy, and potentially the stuff of nightmares. I didn't care for the sequel. And don't anybody tell me about the 3rd movie - I haven't seen it (yet)!

... or simply like movies that require an active brain while watching

Did Dachs suggest In the Loop yet? Not really a small film, but still absolutely fantastic.
