Given that (as I imagine) the whole water canopy idea was invented to attempt to justify the Flood in the first place, explaining a miracle by the use of another miracle is highly unsatisfactory, especially when a great many YECs and ID proponents alike try to insist that the events of the Bible did actually occur in line with the accepted laws of physics.
