The Recession's effects on Masculinity.

Link

This was a stat I didn't know about this economic crisis. It is interesting that apparently the majority of the workforce will soon be women not men. I guess we can expect to see a lot of pissed hormonal activity real soon if not sooner.

I didn't say it was your fault. Just funny how much money and effort was spent compiling the info for the article. Sorry, made me laugh. But what you said touches on the important issue, the demographic change of the workforce.

It was worthwhile, yes.

This sort of trend is probably going to continue... I have the impression that most colleges that aren't mine have a pretty high female to male ratio, and that's probably going to lead to some sociological shifting in the not-too-distant future.

I suppose I'll add Boys Adrift to my short list since you've been so high on it and the last few threads I've read make it sound relevant, from what you've given us.

Well it makes sense, women in the workforce get paid less and they're often easier to push around for various socialised reasons. Why wouldn't you fire the dudes first in a downturn?

Well, in the Great Depression, men would turn to "gossiping about their lives and those of others...in an effort to pass time." according to my textbook. Which is hilarioud.

It has nothing to do with that. The industries that are suffering the most (manufacturing, construction, etc) are ones that employ more men.

Pretty much word for word what I would have said - QFT man. But it's not just this recession that is changing things - there are some trends that have been growing for years, as a lot of others have pointed out with women being the majority of college graduates at a lot of places. This is combined with the fact that jobs in such blue-collar industries have seen a lot of outsourcing and no longer provide as consistent employment, or as high of a standard of living, as they would in the past. Tough breaks all around for men (not that it's bad that women are holding top jobs of course).

Information that I would actually find a lot more interesting, as far as how people are handling unemployment, is how much the average person is relying on an extended family network now as compared to the past. Of course one always hears about young adults still living with their parents when out of work and all - however for a lot of society I don't think people can rely on family farms/businesses or whatever like back in the Great Depression. The whole country is much more mobile today though than ever before, though so likewise I wouldn't be surprised by some significant demographics shifts in the next few years to areas where jobs are better (which is already happening in the Rust Belt, but I could see it happening more and elsewhere too).

Indeed. I wonder if this trend will bring an increase in crime or something along those lines...
