As the Generalissimo approaches the podium, thousands of hands reach into the sky at stiff right angles, palms stretched outwards. While it is traditionally known as the Roman salute, as part of the many appropriations of European culture and society that have constituted much of the reforms of the Republican regime, this artifice of Latin imperial culture has been subordinated to the mythical Middle Kingdom (newly, Republic) of the Dragon as the Dragon Salute. This too is attributed to the reforms of the Dragon Government, as a part of its fascination with dragons. Obligatorily, anything in anyway related to governmental policy and the history of China before and often after the Dragon Revolution, is the Dragon something or other. More practical-minded names are discouraged, as the entirety of Chinese history has been re-branded and renamed with dragon, glorious and republican. Even the title of Generalissimo is an import. He answers the salutes with his own stiff-armed reply. As he does so, with mechanical precision, giant banners behind the podium unfurl all at once. Most of them display a curled dragon, the new universal symbol of Sinosphere patriotism, though the center banner is the actual flag of the Republic. The jubilant crowd erupts, cheering. Informally, several brown-shirted affiliates to the Dragon Guard (the strictly informal organization of primarily young men who support the rote fascination with all things draconic, and authoritarian) stand from their seats, moved beyond all control by patriotic fervor, and grant the Generalissimo another stiff-armed salute crying in Mandarin, Long live the Dragon!
The Generalissimo acknowledges them by returning the salute, displaying his all-important humanity to the crowd (so as not to further the impression that the Dragon Government is a cabal of inhuman, overly-pragmatic bureaucratic automatons) by smiling knowingly. He then lowers his arms to display that it is time for silence. A hush falls over the crowd, as he shuffles papers and doffs his military cap. After a moment's meditation, he cries into the microphone, The Dragon is ascendant! and is greeted with cheers of affirmation. Even now, the glorious Army of the Republic is bringing to heel the Spanish dogs who brutally repress the Chinese people of Taiwan, and the native peoples of the Philippines and New Guinea. he chuckles, But it is New Guinea only to the Spanish! Zheng-He, the Dragon Admiral, long ago claimed these lands for China, as you know. the fascination with Zheng-He, and the colonial cult (despite the loss of the colonies) are rote to as well to the new Sinosphere patriotism.
The era of oppression is now coming to an end, as the era of decadence and complacency came to an end with the Revolution. China, and all of Asia, will reclaim its rightful place at the vanguard of human progress. We shall show to the world what it means to be the sons and daughters of the Dragon! Those who stand in our path shall be annihilated, as surely as the sun rises each morning. As surely as it sets, their pitiful empires will convulse, crumble and fall before our indomitable might, our unshakeable resolve!
His words hit the crowd like a wave. More displays of revolutionary, patriotic prostration. As our struggle continues, I urge all of you to dedicate yourselves selflessly and with all your force to the defeat of the enemy. Each man, each woman, each child shall ultimately be called upon to do their part for this great nation. We have been called into a momentous hour in our nation's history, in the history of the world. Be worthy of that hour! Remember always that you are the product of the struggle of a thousand generations' ingenuity, sacrifice, determination and resolve. China is the most ancient, most strong, society on Earth. While the tides may ebb and flow, ultimately the wave of Chinese progress shall always erode the rocky shores of ignorance! Are his metaphors overwrought? Is he nameless? Yes, and yes. But that does not change the fact that the nameless, militarily-dressed bureaucrat who occasionally urges the Chinese people to greater feats and greater tasks is universally beloved. The Generalissimo is the most popular man in all of China.
He ends his speech with the intonation of the words, The Dragon is ascendant. China shall destroy her enemies, and having done so, will then ensure the universal joy and profit of all mankind. We shall drown our enemies in a wave of bodies, a thousand-thousand palaces high. It is like a mantra. One final stiff-armed salute, and he leaves the podium. The crowd stands. They clap, they cheer, they weep. Everyone is touched by the truth of his words.
The tide of progress is unstoppable. It is unassailable. For every soldier the enemy kills, five more shall take his place. The Dragon is ascendant.
