Exclamation NEW expansion - Civilization III: Conquests

You may have seen this thread already
E3: Firaxis Announced 2nd Civ3 Expansion! but here's an excerpt

----------

Quote:
As reported by Yolky at Apolyton.
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/strategy...ew_6028002.html

quote:We were fortunate enough to attend a Firaxis press event at which the company's president, Jeff Briggs, and the company's chief creative director, veteran game designer Sid Meier, announced a new partnership with Atari Games (the publisher formerly known as Infogrames) to develop and publish new PC games. According to Meier, the new agreement gives Firaxis the right to revisit such classic properties as Colonization, Covert Action, Silent Service, F-15 Strike Eagle, and F-19 Stealth Fighter. Briggs and Meier went on to formally announce the next product in the Civilization series: Civilization III: Conquests, a new expansion pack for the award-winning 2001 strategy game.

Civilization III: Conquests will feature a brand-new single-player campaign that will model eight different famous historical campaigns, including the battle for Mesopotamia, the battles between the Mayans and Incans, the struggle for control of feudal Japan, and even World War II. The expansion pack will also feature a whopping eight new civilizations, as well as a great many other additions, including new military units, new diplomacy options, new government types, new wonders of the world, new victory conditions, new resources, and new luxuries. The expansion will be released later this year.

By Andrew Park, GameSpot

Incas and Mayans would appear to be 2 of the eight new civs.

Sooo, we can expect a Mac port in......??

Hopefully this will mark the return of Events files , given that they're planning "famous historical campaigns".

I also heard that one of the new Civs are the Mac Users ...apparently their default starting position is in the middle of a 20x20 desert with the new Fruit Resource (apple...), and they start the game with 89 Unhappy Citizens and 1 Worker (Brad)...

The urge to curse here is very strong. I've been reading the other threads on PTW... obviously sales have been enough to plan on a second expansion pack. And yet they keep promising us Mac users stuff but never delivering.

All we have is the wonderful Brad Oliver, without whom we'd still be stuck without any editor at all and probably no hope of getting past v1.21g! Dare we make any speculation on when this little gem will make it to our platform?

*sigh*

well, this would seem to answer the question posted in the "capaign for mac PTW" thread. Brad said that the sales figures for the PC would probably be the deciding factor . Obviously the sales were pretty good if they're planning ANOTHER expansion.

and great screen fruno!!

That would make a great t-shirt, dojoboy! Fruno, you are yet another great example of the brainpower and genius that all of us Mac users could bring to the rest of the world! Now if only the other game publishers could build roads to Mac CivFanatics so we could build PTW faster!

The trend on the PC side for a lot of games lately seems to be cranking out expansion pack after expansion pack - it's like printing free money since the overhead in making them is so small. The sales of PC PTW just need to cover the expenses required to make PC PTW - let's say for laughs that the number of copies to hit that point is 100,000 for the PC. (I don't know what the breakeven point for the PC would be.)

3-5% of X is 3000-5000 Mac copies. That's a pretty small number for Mac sales (a commercial title that sells under 10-12k is hard to market on the Mac, I'm told). You also have to figure the cost to port it to the Mac is higher than average for an expansion pack because of the netplay component. That would (presumably) not be an issue with the new Civ3 expansion since it appears geared towards single-player enhancements, based on what little I've read.

lol Fruno you're brilliant!

The frustrating thing is that many of the unhappy citizens in MacCivFanatics city could SWEAR we saw the PTW galley on the horizon between turns, but the turn ended with it still in the fog of war, too late to click on it.

I agree, Fruno -- you are all the things the others said.

However, I am seriously thinking about getting a PC for gameplay. Too many of the 'great' games are not supported for the things that make them great: longevity; lots of novelty; upgrades and expansions. The Dells at my university are great and a third of the price that I paid for my little iMac in 2001.

In my ideal world, I'd have the big, bulky and black Dell on my desk at home and a sleeky, strong and silver Powerbook in my backpack. Of course, in that world, I'd also have PTW and Conquests on my iMac.

It'll be one of those PC format Galleys that don't even sink in the ocean, unlike the Mac ones that sink in puddles....

Call me cynical but Conquests does not seem to offer much for I presume another $30 or so. Cracker is generating a new civ every month in the Game of the month with funky new units too. You can create your own new resources etc with the editor and the 1.29B2 patch gives you access to PC scenarios (I think).

No, I have enough difficulty in trying to learn the existing game well enough to complete a GOTM sucessfully (and in a month).

Well I beleive Conquest will offer things the editor doesn't. Like new victory condition and some new map features... so it looks pretty intersting to me...

There's an opportunity for MacSoft to clean things up here. Patch-parity, PTW and Conquests together in a box for $30 American. That's AUD$70+ on my side of the planet, but it would be worth it. Civ3 is still the best gaming investment I've ever made in terms of hours played and fun had.

I know it's old ground, but MacSoft will make far more by dumping the code for HALO onto a CD-ROM than they will in updating us diehards with Civ3. There's a harsh reality: numbers. In a world of fashions and fads, big sales won't come from meeting our needs. There's a possibility that Brad's something coming up 'shortly' might fit the bill, so I wait, I hope. (Of course, Brad's busier than a Harry Potter bookseller now that Glenda Adams has left Westlake).

Another old saw of mine: it would make more commercial sense for MacSoft to port 'Rise of Nations' and get more up-to-date traction from that, than it would to spend heaps on 'maintaining' Civ3.
