Coffee and Cotton, Civilization Community Mod (4C) or "Save Our Wildlife!" (ver. 1.0)

This mod is prepared by collecting ideas from Civ Fanatics and Apolyton forums and adding my own ones. The mod comes along with Zeb Fischer's huge map adapted to changes. Random maps will work fine but other custom maps may not. Here is the list:

Resources:

Ivory is replaced by coffee (+2 commerce) and Furs is replaced by Cotton (+1 commerce). We don't kill animals for luxury purposes do we? :) Coffee grows on grasslands and jungles, cotton does on plains and food plains. Replacement of furs will result in less interest through the arctic circle. Wines does no more have food bonus. No more feeding up with grapes!

Civilizations:

Iraquois civilization is replaced by the Incas and Americans are replaced by the Spanish. You will see the former Iraquois leader as Incan leader Atawallpa, Catherina of the Russians as Archbishop Isabella of the Spanish, and Abe Lincoln of the Americans as Petro the Great of Russians (What an irony!)

Spanish are religious and expansionist. Incas are industrious and commercial. Being industrious and expansionist is now represented by France.

All civilizations have more city names, so less "New" named cities. Djengis Khan and Kublai Khan are removed from Chinese great leaders list as they were not Chinese but Hun.

Unique Units:

Spanish have the conquistador. It is a knight with extra attack, represented by Chinese rider. Incas have the defensor. A warrior with extra defence, represented by Aztecan jaguar warrior. Japanese samurai is now available as a swordsman with extra move. Mounted warrior is now India's unique unit. They will no more transform horses to elephants :) Germans have teutons instead of panzers. It is a cavalry with extra attack. It uses Cossack animations.

Defensor directly upgrades to pikeman (bypassing spearman) and hoplite is upgraded to musketman. I aimed no civilization to reach its unique unit later than middle ages.

Cure For Corruption:

The optimum number of cities (rampant corruption) for 180*180 map is 60 instead of 24 (The numbers for other sizes are also multiplied by 2,5). Police Station is flaged to decrease corruption and its cost is increased to 12 (10). This way it will also have some benefit for monarchies and communisms.

Governments:

Communism is made immune to technology theft.

Citizens:

Tax collectors produce 2 commerce instead of 1. Scientists produce 2 science instead of 1. Entertainers remain the same.
****************************************************

Tip: If you want to play as the Americans, start as English, grab Zulu workers and mix them into your cities which you have grabed from the dutch (oops.. no dutch) and French, plus the Aztecan cities which you got after a brief period of Spanish control :D

All I really care to say is that Ghenghis (Djenghis) Khan and Kublai Khan were not hun. They were Mongol. And Kublai Khan DID sit over china after his grandfather's (Ghenghis) empire was ruined by inheritance. Each successor wanted to rule it all and instead ruled a small part, Kublai had the biggest with all of china. I was actually quite upset when I found the mongols weren't in, after all they did conquer half the known world from korea to Poland, from mid-RUssia down to India. And the raze the city option is sooooooo perfect for Ghenghis.

And a note: It was the polish that fought the mongol hoardes off. Otherwise the rest of europe might have been under mongol power.

I fixed a small bug and updated the zip. For those who already downloaded before 9.42, a small .bat fixing the problem is at the bottom of the post. Place it under your main Civ3 directory and run.

About the Hun-Mongol issue... Yes he is Mongolian. But Cengiz, Kubilay, Cagatay, Oktay are well known names in Turkey. I don't know why ;)

The Polish didn't fight of the Mongols, internal ranglings and the leading Mongol General (in the West-Europe) Batu Khan died leaving chaos in the army thus making the only reason for the civilisation to exist(war + army) to collapse in on itself. Though this didn't stop the now decrepid empire from dominating the vast steppes of russia nor Far East, it just the expansion of the empire. It broke up into religious groups and settled and nomadic people. Still surving into the 17th century as the Goldern Hoard.

NB. I might have got the leading general name wrong but the rest is true

The Hun question - Genghis was Tartar, a more correct name for Mongols as Mongolia didn't exist then. Remnants of the Tartar hoardes settled in the Crimea, and remained there until the Tartar SSR under the USSR was deported by the greatest barbarian of world history - Joseph Stalin. They're now settled in central Russia in the region now known as Tartarstan. Nearly 500 miles east of Moscow

hmm, well to make this easier, let's use Ghenghis's real name Temujin. (Ghenghis means universal). I thought he was named after a tartar general that his father captured and came to admire. Perhaps it just ended up that his people came under tartar control, but I also recall him having to somehow prove himself to the throne before his own people would follow him, and he fought the tartars.......

they should have used CREST... that would have been the best tartar control...

Ghenghis means universa

Actually it was 'chinghis' but that's another matter...

A point about the patch and the fix. The fix aimed only two people who downloaded the patch before I fixed it. I see 3 people dowloaded it. So...

The ones who downloaded the patch after I updated the patch [/b]must not[/b] run the fix! The install.bat now already contains the fix. If you did so, rerun the fix.

The install.bat swaps Catherina and Abe. In my initial attachment I forgot to switch them for the foreign advisor screen so released the fix.bat and updated the install.bat. If you run the updated bat and then run the fix.bat they will swap back and you will see Abe as "Isabella" in the foreign advisor screen :D

Any comments on the mod other than "Cengiz"?

I like the cure for corruption. I can't stand the horrible corruption..... in a game I was playing, until I moved my palace to thebes, a conquered city, the bottom, conquered half of my empire had so much corruption, they only produced 1 shield per turn. Though they should have done 13 for example.

A little mistake there man, its wasnt POLISH it was the Russians. Mongols never went past the Kiev Rus, they were too stuck fighting local feudals which later united and drove em back in 1380, in battle of Kulikov.

If you kindly explain the reason for the single star I can fix the problem or improve the patch for you :)

For myself, I enjoy it very much... and this does not aim to change the whole game but just to tune it.

The first and most devistating defeat of the mongols was by the mamelukes. the mongols were reminants of their former power by the time they made it to east europe.

I do like coffee as a luxury though i do not thing it should replace furs but that is an editor problem.

Now, i totally disagree about wine losing its food surplus. Cultures around the Med sea (all until the muslim Arabs arrived) used wheat, olive and grape for food (the three basics) and grapes, either as a fruit or for wine definitely was a source of food, not just fun.

Regards,

Ludovic

WE don't kill animals for luxuries but most of the world did up until the last...70-100 years? I'm not sure when conservation stepped onto the scene. Removing Ivory and Furs just seem silly to me. If you wanna tree-hugger Civ you forgot the WHALES!

nothing's wrong with tree-hugging. but to remove these luxuries is just historically inaccurate. They existed, so they should be in there. What would you really leave africa with without Ivory?

Africa also has coffee :) anyway this is a minor point. its real impact is removing some luxuries from the arctic circle and making mesopotaima and india more valuble... besides the mod has two new nations and modifications on unique units... this resource thing is only the sensational issue, not the real one ;) there are many historically existant luxuries missing in the game. tobacco? this is just cotton and coffee "instead of" furs and ivory.

Tree huggen hippie! Please someone make a "Pave the Planet" type mod to balance this crap out.

Just to piss everyone off even more, I'm going to be entirely annoying. I'm norwegian. We eat whales. They're mammals so they taste like steak. We're also big producers of furs. AND we have a whaler in parliament. He wears sealskin clothes and has been sabotaged by Greenpeace.

The mongols could have conquered Europe, but would never have held it...
Not enough food for their horses. Besides the logistics of an invasion were too great. They relied on flat terrain and plains in order to move fast and manoeuver.
The hungarians and polish TRIED to fight them, but they still almost made it to Vienna and other parts of Europe.
What finally broke the Mongol invasion was their internal power struggle and the vacuum left by the death of Ogatay (Temujins kiddo). In the end they split into four distinct empires (and no, the loss against the mamelukes had nothing to say for Europe, I think it even came after the European invasion was called off), which eventually died a natural death...

BTW: about the norwegian thing...
Only kidding (wink wink, nudge nudge) I DO live in Norway, but my mom's Irish (u know, fuzzy leprechauns and all), and I've never tasted whale meat. But I've heard it tastes of steak. We didn't vote for the mad sealskinner either.

hehe have ya ever tried lutefisk? (im not sure if i spelled it right)

Qelebex, no offese to yer mod or anything, but it is kinda tree-huggerish. i really do like the cotton resource tho, but like said replacing furs and ivory takes alot away
like how you say yer taking emphasis off the tundra zones to the warmer climates... sorry but there have been too many games where i sit up in the cold tundra to not have any luxuries up there!
and i also disagree about "wines" losing the food bonus - like said grapes have been a dietary staple for a long time

your ideas for having all the special units early on is a good idea, but the problem is you have alot of them set up so they look like a bunch of other units
and increasing effectiveness of specialists is good too

apparently you havent played civ3 after the advent of railroads. :D
