Could we agree to call The Great Library: TGL and leave GL for great leaders.

In some posts, I have to think back to know which one of them is the topic of the sentence.

Just a thought.

a quick question, what is IIRC? i've seen it mentioned but what does it stand for? and what does it do if it isn't self evident from the name?

It's a common abbreviation for "If I Recall Correctly".

how about GLib, GLig, GLea for great Library, Great lighhouse, Great Leader?

That way, any newbie will get it the first time without asking.

How about mentioning whatever it is in long hand first, and put the abbreviations in brackets, then you can refer to the abbreviations thereafter.

I must admit it is quite frustrating when ppl throw abbreviations around like confetti. Do they expect me to be on their wavelength or something. This especially goes when they refer to another game - although I know what SMAC is, but one game was mentioned, and I thought "What the f**k? What game is that?"

Have you ever read a book where the author uses acronyms straight away without either using them in long hand first or without a glossary? I hope not.

So, please, can we only refer to abbreviations once you have defined them, as my psychic capabilities are running low.

I'm ROTFLMAO, LOL. IMHO, this is a great thread, even if it is off-topic.

Seriously though, people who use these stupid abbreviations and acronyms are quite arrogant. They forget that not everyone on this forum has English (or even, like, American, like) as their first language.

In the name of clarity and for the greater good of all, I think abbreviations should not be used, and those that continue doing it should have their eyes poked out by a Veteran Spearman

Assuming that their eyes don't beat the Spearman in combat!!!

I really was only asking about TGL and GL to make Civ III posts more readable.

I agree...

Most of those TLA (Three Letter Acronyms) and ETLA (Extended Three Letter Acronyms) are / should be well known.

It is when ppl use less known acronyms, I am annoyed.

But ta (thanks) for showing us the light
