After deleting cache (which I do regularly) and setting up a game, the start select screen shows 1 civ space and the announcement

SELECT MAP SIZE
while YnAEMP is loaded (but apparently it isn't). Tried it twice, restarted CiV, screen still showing like this. (I tried uploading a screenshot, but apparently CiV is using an invalid file format -tga -for screenshots).
What on Earth is going on here?
