Install mods directly into the game files?

I have Civ 5 for Linux with all the DLCs. I've already modified some XML files a bit to make happiness easier to manage and I've tried a few games where I ridiculously buffed some civs. However mods don't work, I've tried following everything from this thread on Reddit. The only mod that ever worked was the enhanced UI mod, which works by acting like a DLC instead of a mod. So is there any way I can install a mod directly into /Steam/SteamApps/common/Sid Meier's Civilization V/steamassets/assets/dlc, instead of the usual mod menu? I'm aware that I won't be able to share the maps with anyone.
