Your Top 3 Battles of WWII

You guys know of any good books on the war in the pacific, focusing on the early years of Japanese expansion and the Allied contributions? The last book on the subject I read basically only started in 1941 and acted as though the Australians, New Zealanders, Dutch, and Brits didn't really exist.

Forgotten Armies: Britians Asian Empire and War with Japan is what you're looking for.

Thanks, I'll look into it.

Try Defeat into Victory by William Slim for the Burma theatre of war - I have an article on CFC on the subject as well.

What about Iwo Jima? Did the Americans really "have to" take the island? or was it an unnecessary loss of military personnel?
Yeah, it was costly but it did provide an emergency landing field for B-29s. Okinawa was much more costly but would have provided an important staging base for Downfall.

Peleliu on the other hand was a complete waste of lives without any military benefit.

When and how was the Japanese battleship Yamato sunk?
April '45; like a (auto-censored)
